Has pocket sand ever been used actually?

Not off the ground, someone carrying sand in some manner to deploy as a means of non-lethal self defense?

There is a video of an Asian guy near his moped who gets in a fight with a monkey. Pocket sand effectively deployed.

The beast was obviously trying to steal their bike , alas OP specified sand was in pocket and not picked up.

I used it against the ATF a few years ago. They never got a good look at me and have never come back.

    It's very effective.

carrying sand around would be so awkward though, what about baking soda?

it's really not if just a handful in a pocket. it sits at the bottom. sand is abrasive, which is what you want. anything silica based works the best.

far better than pepper spray, as it's not mistaken for a firearm, and it's great for people that want to fight with fisticuffs to get out of there.

Baking soda grains are much finer and will not get much as much distance than sand grains however it may have a tactical advantage of marking your opponent and creating a small cloud you can use to escape

Isn’t there some urban legend about ninjas filling eggs with ground up glass to throw in someone’s eyes?

it's just a variant of pocket sand with some pepper in it. they used the egg as a handy way to hide and carry it, and it's easy to break in the hand.

There's probably some sort of better powder you could throw that would permanently blind on eye contact or even instantly kill upon inhalation. Sand is just a wimpy and unimaginative choice for pocket powder.

it's called acid, anon. but that's at lethal levels of force. may as well just shoot or stab then.
