Hard time sleeping when out

I really do feel at peace and comfy when I'm out, especially after I'm done walking and can sit down to eat and relax at the campfire. However, when I try to sleep, whether it's in my tent of under my tarp, I just can't get comfortable. I toss and turn for hours until I fall asleep, and still, I'm lucky if I manage to sleep more than 5 hours. I thought it was my shit sleeping pad, so I got a new inflatable one, which was surprisingly pricey, even for a small one that barely fit me. However, it didn't make too much of a difference. I've borrowed a hammock from a friend to try out and that was just terrible, probably because I'm not a back sleeper, and I ended up just putting it on the ground and using it as a ground sheet to sleep on. Lately I've tried to put my sleeping pad on the floor in my bedroom with my pillow and cover, to see if I can sort of get used to it, but even then it's hard to fall asleep.
What's the secret to sleeping well when you're out?

      hammocks are comfy to relax in, but I can't imagine sleeping in one

    Somehow I reckon it's not just the "upper" shelter but the perimeter as well that is needed to make you comfortable. When I sit in a drywall enclosure I feel much safer even though there's no roof over my head. From the earliest times people probably encircled their camps with thorny brush piles like they still do in African villages. Multiple people also bring peace of mind and there's always someone to tend the fire. To conclude, being alone in a dark open place is probably not normal for a human to feel comfortable in.

    Do you read ? You can get a small book light that attaches to your book and read until you fall asleep . You will prolly need a comfy pillow too.

    Do way more during the day
    Youll be too tired to care about the ideal sleeping pad to pillow ratio

      Get up abnormally early the day you go out, cut your sleep short so you'll know you'll be tired. Do lots of physical activity during the day. Don't eat dinner until an hour or so before you turn in, and have a few sips of whiskey just before lights out.

      These. Also, you get used to sleeping on hard ground if you do it enough.

      If you can't sleep, it's likely because you haven't burned enough energy. So basically
      Alcohol is great, except when you have to piss in the middle of the night

    Maybe you're not used to the sleep conditions. You fall asleep when your mind has learned that it can trust your new environment. The only thing you conciously recognize as being different is a more uncomfortable pad. Sometimes it takes a few nights to get used to it.

    Also consider
    - perimeter, preferrably not on a platter, this is even more important when camping is illegal
    - shelter, personally, I don't like being able to see moving branches or clouds, which is why I use a tent.
    - food, I can't fall asleep when hungry
    - insulation, will make you wake up periodically if insufficient
    - unfamiliar sounds. Winter forest sounds are new for some
    - feeling of your gear, like your pad
    - peace of mind
    - tiredness, alleviates some of the distractions listed but can only do so much

    Nearly everyone who sleeps in a hammock does so on their side.

    It’s kind of dumb to think “I’ll just figure it out while I’m in the woods,” right? Like if you get a brand new tent you don’t take it out of the box at the trailhead; you set it up in your yard to get a feel for how it needs to be done (and to make sure there’s no obvious manufacturers defect). You’d think people would do the same thing with a hammock. Take it to a park, find two trees, then screw around with it for a bit. Or even not reinvent the wheel and just look it up online.

      Hammocks take a lot of finagaling to get them just right, but god damn once i got it tuned in, thats the best I've ever slep while camping.

        There’s zero guess work or messing around with setting one up so you can sleep on your side. The only adjustments I have to make are overall height, position under my tarp, and the height of my foot end relative to my head, none of which determine whether or not I can sleep on my side.

    I find inflatable pads uncomfortable too since it forces me to sleep like a corpse in a coffin on my back the whole night, I normally move and spread around alot in my sleep but that's not possible on a tiny pad barely the size of my body in a straight dracula position.
    Doesn't matter if the pad cost hundreds of $$, it's not a squishy kingsize bed.
    Hammock became slightly more comfortable after I learned to position myself at an angle so I'm not laying like a banana but again, a slight toss in my sleep and I soon wake up to work on a working position again.

    I just accept comfort levels aren't going to be top notch, if I aim for top notch sleep I'd lower my hiking comforts by carrying around more heavier sleep system.

    For car camping I take foldable tent beds like the military style and a foam mattress but that's not an option for hiking.

    Anyway I will fall asleep after a hard day on a trail even if I have to sleep on a hard rock, just not comfortably but that's ok.

      this is pretty much my issue too, but I don't want to carry around a $1000 inflatable mattress

    Go out more often.
    Get used to it.
    Always always make your tent on soft gras or earth.
    Hike more until you are really tired.

    you get used to it eventually and best case scenario is you will sleep on floor for awhile because overly soft home bed makes your back hurt like hell
