Grizzly bear defense

I've got a grizzly bear that's roaming near my house. I'm thinking a shotgun with slugs is my best option for protection but how would that compare to say a .45-70 lever action? I've got a .357 mag revolver but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable confronting a bear with it, even with a shit hot Buffalo Bore load.

Just get Buffalo Bore hardcast for your revolver, you’ll be fine.

Bears aren't armor plated anon. People have killed grizzly bears with shitty 22, albeit that was an extremely skilled poacher and no reason not to use something with more margin on your own property. But if you look at actual IRL recorded bear defense encounters, even with handguns everything 380 or higher worked. What matters more is that you take 5 minutes to pull up a basic bear anatomy chart and learn where to shoot, and then actually be able to do so. If you're comfortable with your revolver and can do decent groups with it decently fast that's fine and you can actually have it on you all the time. If you're going specifically after it or want to be prepared to try to kill it sure use a rifle.

Don't be a moron though when it comes to fuddlore meme shit. You can hunt bears with bow and arrow. There are lots of resources devoted to their vital points (again, different than deer) and methods of death and how they work. Any decent centerfire will do it.

i'll just stick with the revolver then.

how bout you just leave it the frick alone, dumbass?

it took a huge shit near my house. the situation has escalated

don't shoot it, you'll just piss it off. it will have nothing to lose by mauling you once it gets shot, it knows it will probably bleed out and die so it'll just frick you up.

Shotguns are the best thing I think. 30-06 and 45-70 should work too. Make sure you can reliably hit the vital areas, don't have a gun "just in case" and never use it.

The shotty is less powerful, slower to reload, and probably has a lower capacity. You didn't mention if the shotty was a pump or a semi so I can't comment on which weapon is most likely to be fumbled under stress.

a lever gun in that caliber will definitely work and get great penetration but i dunno if i'd discount a modern shotgun with a tube full of slugs, pump or otherwise

Oh, I'm not discounting it, I was simply asked to comment on which was better. And the average .45-70 load is both more powerful and capable of more penetration than the average 12ga slug.
Now maybe the shotty is full of Brenneke Magnum Crush and the levergat is wimpy Cowboy action loads?

If you think you're going to hit it with the entire magazine even Birdshot would work.

up here in PNW, where Grizzly hunts are allowed at least, if you want them to drop fairly quickly, usually hunters use something .300 (.300 WSM/.300 WM) or .338 (usually .338 WM). .30-06 is sufficient, but if you've ever stared down a real westcoast grizzly within 50-70 yards, you'd probably want something with a bit more oomf.

Of course, something like Federal's deep penetrator truball rifled slugs, 1-3 shots, will end a Grizzly in a self defence situation.

Do you know how many times in recorded history someone has hit a bear in the head or torso with any bullet and still been killed?

Just don't underestimate the fear freeze factor when it comes to Grizzlies. They are fricking massive, very loud, very scary up close (and I mean like within 100 yards). They will close that 100 yards in 3 seconds flat and be on top of you if they perceive you as a threat or food. If there are classes offered for bear defence nearby, and usually there are in PNW, get some. They are really helpful with helping you learn how to be aware of your surroundings and what to look for when it comes to black bears or grizzlies.

This is why I prefer cheese grenades for bear defense. You take a standard WW2 pineapple grenade, cover it with cheese, and carry that innawoods. Then when the bear attacks, pull pin, toss grenade, bear says "holy shit, cheese! you are my finest friend!" eats grenade, and BOOM no more bear.

Worrying about marginal cases is odd when I'm pretty sure the only time in the last thirty years there's been a recorded mauling after a hit was with a 44mag, which virtually everyone in the world agrees is enough for bear.

Raven 25 is all you need. File down the sights so that when the bear shoves it up your ass it won't hurt as much.

Imagine being friends with a bear. You bring the bear food, the bear sometimes brings you food, any intruders on your property would get BEARED, you could cuddle the bear when it's cold, the list of benefits with literally no downside goes on and on.

Anons, why aren't we friends with bears?

The most important thing is actually fricking hitting it. Don't buy a gun you aren't comfortable with, and can't make fast shots and follow-up shots with. Like if you are comfortable and fast with a 9mm, then a 9mm with 17rds of buffalo bore hardcast that's going to be best. If you are a revolver fiend then ya the big iron is the way.

Clearly some morons in this thread lmao

I carry a 590 loaded with alternating slug & 00 buck, would aim for the head. 45-70 lever or 44/454 revolver are also great options tho

The hard cast 180 grain buffalo bore 357 mag cartridge has something around 80" penetration in flesh. This is an estimate I made shooting things like water jugs and tree trunks and extrapolating the relationship between those and flesh analogs, so it isn't a perfect measurement but I think it is close enough. That is more than enough to reach any vital spot on a grizzly bear as long as your aim is true. I'd still pick a long gun of some kind if I had a choice but I think I'd be okay with the revolver with some practice
