Heritage Rough Rider if you don't want to spend $1000 on hand gun. Rock Island also makes swing out .38 special revolvers for under $500 but I don't like the grips on them.
Yeah it's great but it's expensive. If you don't want to spend $1k on a platform you don't have much experience with, spend $400 on a brand new Taurus, and then spend the leftover $600 on ammo so you can get plenty of practice.
If you have the budget then just get whatever you think is coolest. Except the Rhino. If you want to brew up your own pissin' hot loads then make sure it's a Ruger. If you're rolling on a budget, get a Taurus. They've come a long way in the past few decades.
Yeah new Taurus revolvers are just as reliable as the expensive revolvers. Triggers aren't the best but they're definitely workable. Also this is a personal opinion that anybody is welcome to shit on, but I think the contours on Taurus revolvers and the Taurus logo are both very slick and attractive as far as revolvers go.
Lol no they are not. The metal is softer. Lockup looser and in general they just ain't well made. They are functional tho. >t owns many a revolver and carries a Taurus J frame
I got a 6inch taurus 66 as my first revolver a few years back. Trigger isn't fantastic, but its been perfectly serviceable. It's a very revolvery looking revolver.
Bubba here
Rugers are not made from supersteel and the barrel face will get carved up badly from shooting hot loads just like any revolver
I can post pics of my forcing cone on my gp100 if you want. It doesn't have a cut across the face so it's still good to fire... but it's obvious that the double base nitrocellulose/nitroglycerin magnum powders popular in magnum revolvers are taking their toll.
Ruger will replace the barrel if it gets too bad. Don't recommend you shoot a lot of Lil Gun, or 5744, or other high Nitro double base powders.
Rugers are extremely strong, but that doesn't mean that you can burn the piss out of them.
Anon, Freedom Arms tells you not to do it, nothing to do with Ruger.
There isn't a revolver out there that won't burn the lands out the barrel and ruin the forcing cone with enough Lil Gun and light-for-cartidge bullets.

it's super concealable with the right holster or clip, has been very reliable 1k rounds in, and once you find the proper ammo for your revolver, it's plenty accurate.

if I could have 1 of those revolvers with the grips and barrel length of the one in OP I'd go for it. Those are too small for my hands.
You can definitely get any sort of grip you want in the Taurus 856 or 605, but yeah I think the longest barrel length for those small framed Taurus revolvers is 4" However they do have medium and large frames that come in 6" barrels with equal options for grips. Not trying to sway you one way or the other, just something to think about. Options are good
Go to some local stores and see if they have used pre-lock smiths in nice condition. You will almost certainly find a .38 or .357 at a reasonable price.
Yes. Everyone saying to spend less is wrong, especially if they suggest a rock island or taurus. You'll sell that junk at a loss, this is a gun you can keep forever.
It's barely more expensive than a Ruger nowadays. A quality .357 revolver costs about $1000, cope with that. >b-but my .38 flipshit potmetal is justasgood
it's not.
>A quality .357 revolver costs about $1000
Not if you can find a Dan Wesson for about $500. They're even more bombproof than Rugers and the front lockup is much stronger than traditional real cylinder lockups.
>They're not stronger
They are. Ruger's frames are cast and DWs are forged. It's the reason why Ruger frames are excessively thick.

Oh, which DW are chambered in cartridges operating at 65,000psi?
Freedom Arms, Magnum Research both use cast frames as well made by Ruger's Investment casting company, Pine Tree Castings. All those framed are chambered in actual Super Magnums, not the lengthened cartridges DW made that still operate at only 45,000psi~ because of the limitations of forged frame designs.
Side plate designs are inherently weaker and must be scaled up to ludicrous sizes to compensate for pressure and they don't come close to the longevity pf a forged frame(see X Frames).
I'm not sure where you got this idea about forged frames, but it's retardedly wrong and that's all I'm going to say on the matter.

Cast frames have to be thicker to handle the same pressure as forged. They're essentially rated for the same pressures. Rugers are just fat blocks. I mean they're fine guns but nowhere near as elegant.

Oh here's a fun fact. S&W marketed the K-frame 38 as being "stronger" than the Colt Police Positive because it was larger. It was a total lie but it worked and Colt eventually came out with the Official Police to counter that claim. Didn't matter as they lost their spot at #1 for LEOs anyway.

It's also false, cast frames are significantly stronger than forged frames because of their design, not just the extra thick 410(or 17-4) stainless used in casting.
The ability to cast cavities eliminates the need to cut out a lot of frame strength with side panels, it also means that load is distributed more symmetrically.
Outdated boomer opinion detected and discarded. Taurus sucked 30 years ago but has gotten it's act together in the last 20. Overpaying (3x) for some namebrand is just as bad a value as buying junk. Taurus is fine currently get one anon, weelguns are good. 🙂

survivor bias. i've seen a shit load of complaints ever since taurus "got their shit together" 8 years ago. their g4s suffered mass recalls from drop safety issues. their Spectrum 380s that came out since "taurus is good now!!!!" suffered light strikes.

The Taurus 856 is the best first revolver for the ages. The trigger is so and so, but that's how it is with new revolvers.
Smith & Wesson, their nib revolvers, I'm sorry to say, are widely known as bottom of the barrel, crooked barrel ridiculous trash. I'm sorry, bros

Smith is best in terms of finish and quality and "muh Hillary Hole" shills are just Indians (red dot not woo! woo!) and euro no guns. Ruger is good too, bullet proof construction but I love shooting my wheel guns da only and find their triggers not as good as smith. Kimber just really comes off as an in-between Taurus and the American guns, I've only fingered them so I may be wrong. As for colt I have no input since I've only enjoyed their wheel guns made between late 19th through mid 20th century, they were all exquisite! I also own a chiappa rhino, pic related.

Yes. Bowen talks a little bit about it in his book.

Not if you can find a Dan Wesson for about $500. They're even more bombproof than Rugers and the front lockup is much stronger than traditional real cylinder lockups.
In addition to being stronger and better made, another bonus Dan Wessons have is that they have much better triggers and finishes than Rugers.
They're not stronger, but they are well made.
