Going to be homeless next month

I've never been in this situation before and figured this board would be the best for tips. I still have a full time job and my biggest concern is that I'll end up losing it for being disheveled and exhausted all the time. If I get fired then it's game over for me

thanks

How the hell do you have a full time job and not make rent? Explain your situation, I find it hard to believe you didn't bring this on yourself.

Landlord is selling the property I'm renting and wants me out EOM. There aren't many rentals available in my area and the ones I've applied to all rejected me due to a low credit score (medical debt from an accident I had last year). I can't afford to buy a house because prices are absolutely insane. Need at least $120k income

Can't you just leave your job and move to a cheaper place?
I'm not American so I have no idea what's the situation there

          Anonymous

The cheap places usually dont have many jobs. You also need paystubs before anyone will rent to you or for a bank to give you a mortgage

Honestly believable in this broken economy. Either move in with family or look for roommates, should be some on craigslist. Homelessness is last resort, it's not the end of the world but it plain sucks, no privacy no running water and constant paranoia of getting robbed/arrested. You'll have a much better time if you're in a rural area with trails and such nearby.

Anyway buy yourself a cloud up 2 tent, klymit static v inflatable sleeping mat, and whatever sleeping bag fits your climate. That's all you'll need, you're on your own from there.

because rent keeps going up but wages don't. I know this is a super complicated concept for dementia riddled boomers.

UK here and in a similar situation. Economic situation here is fricking dire, most my wage comes from commissions and my standard base rate barely covers bills/rent (def not food). Thing is, Economy is so fricking shit, I can't get the sales through anymore (and this is finance, so sales are like, tens of thousands of pounds transactions with me making commission on them) which has seen my wage drop by at least 1/4 of what it was 2-3 months ago.
Also generally, because there really isn't much work to do, but finance is still super fricking micromanaged, us workers end up looking like shit to a management team who are pretty unforgiving. So there is very real risk we will start to get made "redundant" soon which I suspect. If that happens, I'm genuinely *fricked* I have zero savings after covid and my bills/rent are just way too fricking high.
Haven't even seen what my next energy bill will be after cap rise. I'm literally using a single candle to light my apartment atm.

What the frick are you talking about? It's extremely common. This isn't 2010 anymore. It's easy for people like you to wonder why, because your parents pay your phone bill, your car insurance, your dental, and make sure you never go hungry... yet you think you are "on your own" because you only pay your rent and internet bill. lmao. I literally get $0 from my parents, they can't even pay their own bills.

if you do end up homeless, at least get a cheap gym membership and shower there. if you are in US, planet fitness has a $10 a month membership. If you can't afford a house, you can at least afford a shower and gym time.

    Previously homeless anon here

My advice is that if you have no other options, try and live at shelters for as long as possible. Sleeping outside can be much more difficult because you have to constantly be worrying about the weather and having water and being able to go to the bathroom and etc. Then again it depends on the shelter or if you even have one in your area. Some of them can be dangerous but all of them have lots of very very traumatized people with lots of PTSD and other issues. So developing good personal self defense skills (not physical, emotional) will be a very good idea.

It is also very important to keep the right perspective. Once you are on the streets it will be very easy for you to give up on your fate and say "this is my life now, I'm homeless."
Try to have some goal in mind for getting yourself out of this. I'm not sure what that could be but I'm sure you could find one. Although whatever mindset you have going into it will be broken over and over again, regaining the will to maintain newer and better perspectives will ensure your livelihood and eventual thriving.

Also it will be very important for you to reach out. Even if you don't have friends other people can support you physically and emotionally so much in place of your family. Finding connections is the best way to find opportunities to get yourself out of this mess.

The experiences you have will likely be parallel to going to war. You may not be capable of preparing yourself for what will happen, but after this is over you should treat yourself with fragile rest and care.

Again, reach out as much as you can. Acquantainces, old family members, other homeless people, whatever. But be smart about it.

I used to be homeless. My ass was saved because I was able to buy a $40 used guitar with the last of my money. You don't have to play or sing well, you'll get better. I made about $40 an hour playing Wagon Wheel, Sympathy for the Devil and Turn the Page on repeat for a year, ended up getting sponsored by a music shop and a fender rep. I would play near fancy restaurants, banks, by the pizza shops drunks get food at after the bars and outside small markets. I made enough in a year to pay off all my debts, get my head screwed on straight (drop speed) and get a proper job and apartment. First priority is to look for a boarding house you can rent a room in. You can find out about these by being friends with the legacy bums. Everywhere has junkies but there are always the legacy bums that usually aren't on drugs; they tend to be involved with the church groups downtown that help the homeless. These are the ONLY ones you want to talk with and you want to keep it short. NEVER get involved in the social life aspect of things. Second priority is to find the soup kitchen and eat there, stop buying food. Third is to cold turkey quit smoking or whatever other habits you have that cost money like that. Take comfort some other way; everyone who was homeless has one weird thing they collect for the rest of their life, for me it is socks and for my wife it is winter jackets. Do that instead of wasting money on consumables.

The big secret to homelessness is its really easy to not be homeless. I never saw normal people who fell on hard times like you panhandling or busking for more than two months. For everyone else it was a choice; it certainly was for me for a while. If you can't find the church hobos try to find genuine hippies (they hang out around the gays).

Have you ever tried to apply for assistance? Some churches and other organizations help with paying rent out of the kindness of their hearts. Job centers can also help too, just ask around and don't be shy

Assuming you are white and american.
Sell all your nonessentials, pack a uhaul.
Move to the midwest or pacific northwest (better out there anyways) and apply for a trade.
Appreticeship dot gov can help you find an area with decent starting pay. Rural area means lower cola.
Though if your finances are that fricked stop buy all nonesentials and take advantage of free entertainment. Most major cities let you apply for virtual library card from anywhere in the usa.
To keep it out related. Vegabonds and other poors may not be the smartest but they will survive the end of times so buying one lunch to learn some tricks of the trade may help if your situation is so dire. This is now a homeless vegabond thread.

Buy an old van and get it safetied/registered immediately. If you already drive then great but cars are even less ideal.
Gym membership for showers, toilet you can use there and at coffee shops, Walmart, service stations, work, and so on.
Get a propane heater if it gets below 10C at night, since your van won't be insulated and it's chilly that way.
Get a mattress for the back and a camping stove, fancying up the place can come later. Plastic totes for food or you *will* wake up with a mouse just chilling on you.
Battery pack and folding or mounted solar panels for power. You'll want to make sure you have enough phone data as well.
And obviously start looking for a new place, get roommates if you have to. The van situation is temporary or permanent, depends what you want it to be. If temporary then what I've said isn't much and you can use all that shit later. If it's permanent then work on making it better as you go.
    Good luck, OP.

Get a hot tent, stove, iron cooking supplies and solar energy. Might have to use wet wipes to bathe. It's better than just trying to live out of a car. It'll be difficult but you can do it bro.

Hey there bro living in a tent the past few months. Only got a phone again recently. Find a spot to pitch a big tent and get an airbed. Don't skimp out on size if you plan to be there awhile. Try get as much stuff as possible between you and the floor under the airbed. Like blankets or cardboard whatever. If you have some money get a sleeping pad too. You'll want a secure enough spot but get a weapon too just incase. Unironically get a big knife and stand your ground if you need too. Deenz and other canned shit is tour friend. It took me a few months to get a stove and some gas to be able to cook but you can do that. Stay positive my friend ill add your discord being homeless is pretty comfy. I'd recommend a tablet and a few power banks. Oh and lights. Get some string AA lights or something. And a few books. Anons have said good advice in this thread reddit helps too unironically

If you have a vehicle, go watch Bob Wells’ guide on YouTube for what to do when you are two weeks from eviction and want to live in your vehicle.
