Spain has 300 or so Leopard 2’s total so this is the first and last transfer from Spain to Ukraine. Maybe they can get some leopards from other countries, but that could cause logistical idduest

How different are Leopard 2s from different countries from a training and logistics pov?

They are all pretty much the same but they may have different radios/optics or MGs, shit like that.

All that changes is where the "on" switch is for the eight billion different functionally identical subsystems.

            Anonymous

Not the difference between different nations, because all my L2 experience was with German ones. I did however go from a Leopard 1 (That was still labeled in German after 40 years of having them) to a Leopard 2 that was very nicely labeled in English and was more confused by having to unlearn the German names for stuff than the conversion from the L1 to L2 gunnery.

The drivers... yeah that's completely fricking different same for the CC and loaders.

The difference between a L1 and L2A5/6 for a gunner is that the gunners control panels are in different locations. The L1 has them stacked while the L2 has the bottom panel to the right. Also one switch that did nothing on the L1 is the control for the L2's automatic off angle turret adjustment.
When the turret is turned to either side and the tank is moving forward if you were to use a lead lock (which the FCC uses to calculate the angular velocity of a target you are tracking to ensure your gun leads them enough) you will be reading into the FCC a false velocity because you are having to account for your own vehicle's movements. With the switch on the FCC takes the reported speed from the engine, your angle off from center and your current range (either manually or laser) on the FCC to automatically turn the turret slightly. The closer the range, the faster the tank is moving and the more to directly 90 degrees off center you are the faster the turret turns automatically.

The switch on the L2 turns that on and off, while in the L1 it just didn't have that functionality so the switch does nothing.

If I didn't make it clear the panels the gunner uses are exactly the same. All the same switches in the same location with the same function other than the one. At least going from a very modern Leopard 1 to an L2.

Out of those 100 are Leopards 2A4 which are in storage since Spain uses the Leopard 2e mainly. So there are plenty more tanks to send.

      20, and see what happens.
      If they captured. Zero more.
If they die too quick. Maybe no more.
If they don't get kills. No more.
If they get good K:D ratios... The floodgates will open.

Those were German Leopards 2 sold to Spain in the 90s. Weapons sale contracts with Germany always include a clause which lets Germans decide whether you can resell their weapons or not.

Yeah they were sold to Spain. Spain owns them. That contract clause is extremely cucked.

well dont agree to the contract then and buy something else. it aint like the leopard is the only tank in the world. theres always 2 sides to a contract

      Maybe.
In 1940 Walther Funk, german minister of finance talked about a post war economic plan to bind europe together and to germany which included:
      >a common european currency decoupled from the gold value
      >a focus on europe as market for german quality goods
      >a need for free trade regulations
      >a clearing system for inner european import and export

How good are Leopard 2s against Soviet trash?

      Anonymous

should be capable of fighting pretty much all of them, unless the Armatas (lmao) / T-90s (if any are left) / T80Us...

but of course it will need training, logistics and proper tactics, so might be less effective than it could be. keep in mind that the ukies are familiar with the soviet style tanks, not the western ones

      Anonymous

Extremely bad. They are going to be just as vulnerable to RPG fire and will probably get abandoned much more often due to their sheer weight. Your “tank on tank kino” probably won’t happen

        Holy shit the cope.

There are multiple examples of Abrams or Challenger taking a dozen RPGs like it's nothing. Leo2 is pretty much the same shit.

      Anonymous

The main difference between any T-72 and Leo 2A4 is user friendliness of the German tank. Crew in Soviet tanks is cramped inside. Leopards are much more comfortable and has space not only for Russian mongol midgets

      Anonymous

It's comfy inside. Really. Except for the turret hydraulics leaking there aren't much issues. Also very simple to use, basically point (well steer) at target, keep in target reticule, laser, shoot with super high hit probability. Night vision is also not bad for it's time.

      Issues with the a4:
      - Hydraulic turret, sometimes hydraulic lines leak
      - Commander has independent sight but no own thermal sight.
      - Commander taking over gun from gunner (he can also just do classic hunt and then assign target to gunner) has no computer support but must know how much to aim up/to the side to compensate distance, target's movement by heart.
      - Another hydraulics drawback: if not full on, the turret has a half on standby-mode where the hydraulics keep being charged so you can move the turret around quickly, but need to do fine adjustments by hand with hand wheels and of course have no computer.
      - Has no first laser echo switch like the A5, so lasering helicopters doesn't work well.
      - Original A4 thermals need to be cooled down to very cold so they take a while to come online and need power.

Basically in full on mode the tank is working perfect for the gunner. It should be able see and engage all targets on the battlefield wo problems. During daylight it's very good with hunter/killer working (non thermal), During night the commander can't really do the hunting part. And if the commander must shot because of a dire situation he needs to be very experienced to hit the target.

I was a gunner so no idea about driving, but hella fast forwards and backwards. Can engage and hit very well while driving.

The whole tank was designed to engage the russian tamk offensive while being in a numerical disadvantage so the optics and fire control is good because every hit counts. Standing around getting hit by rpgs was not the plan.

        >Hydraulic turret, sometimes hydraulic lines leak
The only time they leak is if they are damaged. Also they do not have lines running all over
You might as well say that electrical lines sometimes short out.

        >Commander has independent sight but no own thermal sight.
But does have a duplicate of the gunners sight and the commander can directly control the gunners sight.

        >Commander taking over gun from gunner... has no computer support
Or the commander lays the gun on target and tells the gunner to shoot at it.

        >Another hydraulics drawback: if not full on, the turret has a half on standby-mode where the hydraulics keep being charged so you can move the turret around quickly, but need to do fine adjustments by hand with hand wheels and of course have no computer.
This is false in part. Without stabilization on the gun isn't following the sight head, but all the power controls are identical. When you laze a target the sight head jumps to the correct distance offset requiring the gunner to relay the target. When stab is on the gun jumps to the correct position and the sight stays on target.
In short Stab Off has FCC and power controls.

To avoid smashing stuff (mine rollers) on the front I would run stab off with my range set to 4000m so the barrel was up, If I lazed something closer than my manual range my sight with jump up to match the gun. If I go stab on then laze the gun would drop.

        >Has no first laser echo switch like the A5, so lasering helicopters doesn't work well.
True and false. It doesn't have the first return, but you can relaze if you think the range is completely wrong and you will sometimes get a valid return, or you can just guess, or fire a canister shot that is fired without range correction.

        >Original A4 thermals need to be cooled down to very cold so they take a while to come online and need power.
Which is identical to how all thermal sights work. Thermals see blackbody radiation and need to be cooled to near absolute zero.

          >fire a canister shot

These are the precursor to Poland mass transferring a bunch of Leopard 2s. They're getting a lot of Abrams to replace all their PT91 and T72 fleet as the K2PL will take a while to actually enter service. I suspect that we will give Poland a bunch of A1 or A2 Abrams following our initial 250 unit sale and will replace them with the new next gen Abrams General Dynamics is publicly unveiling in a few months.

Interesting and overlooked development: Germans offered Chile the license to manufacture the Lynx and a new generation MBT locally through the Chilean state owned FAMAE arms group. Chile was looking to replace their whole Leopard 2A4 and Marder fleet over the next decade. They have a lot of spare procurement funding from rare earth metal mining. I think we could see Chile giving a lot of their Leopards to Ukraine for some back room deal where they are allowed to produce the KF51 at a discounted rate. Rheinmetall has already been very outspoken about their desire to support Ukraine even when the German government has cowered from doing so. This could be their passive aggressive way of doing so.
