serious question, what can the Marder do that they can't do with their own equipment? does it just look cool?

It's basically no better than a BMP-2, but Ukraine needs all of the shrapnel protected vehicles they can get.
Only problem is the logistics burden of having an ace combat tier motor pool.

It's insane no German vehicles have any combat experience post ww2, even the exported ones have pretty much 0 combat history. It's abit if a shame, seeing the Marder operate would be nice.

The good thing about Ukraine is all the western weapon systems that aren't used getting some action and I guess the benefit of that is we know what works and what doesn't.

How is it cope? It's a modern amenity that people would grumble about if they had to forego it for a time, not a life-or-death necessity. Also, what the (I assume) Amerisharts and R*ssians that keep harping on this apparently forgot is that German homes are, in general, fairly well insulated. Even without heating my bedroom for example never drops below something like 12°C even in the coldest of winter, just by virtue of my own body heat. Turn on my rig to play some vidya and it gets cozy even without much clothing on. I have zero worries about even the worst-case scenario of no heating whatsoever. All that means is that I'd have to put on a sweater and some thick wool socks.

The economic consequences are more worrying by like an order of magnitude. Not that I'd personally have to worry as I'm working in a system-relevant industry that's gonna be kept around no matter what but obviously it'd suck for the country at large if we had an economic downturn as a result of too little gas for heavy industry. But even that is not an existential threat. Germany has come back from way worse in just a matter of years, not even decades.

Walk me through your ''''''reasoning'''''' here.
                1) Claim: A lack of gas leading to a lack of heating is not an existential threat to Germany.
                2) Observation: However, since it still poses a problem, steps such as rationing are being taken to reduce the severity of potential issues.
                3) ???
                4) Your conclusion: This means that a lack of gas is in fact an existential threat for Germany.

You're not making any sense whatsoever. Just because you take measures to address an issue it doesn't follow that this issue is one of life-or-death. Or are those the only ones that ever get addressed in whatever shithole you crawled out of, anon? Because then at least I'd see where you are coming from.

                Seems to me that

Rationing wouldn't even BE a thing if Germany is as uncaring about its oil and gas supply as it acts

is arguing that because Germany is rationing this must mean its oil and gas supply is in such dire straits that it cannot possibly be as (comparatively) minor an issue as Germany's leadership claims.

... which is obviously retarded and completely illogical because sane people address problems even if they are (comparatively) minor. Only an idiot or insane person doesn't plan for the future and takes precautionary measures.

                [...]
To get in on the bullying and help you not fuck up the same way in the future:
Emphasizing a form of "be" when it is just an auxiliary sounds very weird, but doing it when it serves as a self-sufficient verb is just fine. E.g.:
                >there wouldn't even BE any rationing
                Would be just fine.
                >rationing wouldn't even BE a thing
                Is not fine.
Do you see the difference? If I say "god is" and "god is cool" the word "is" is used in both phrases, but in one it means "god exists" in the other its meaning depends on the adjective it is connected to and doesn't mean anything without it.
Are you a Russian? I know they have no "the" and often use "be" weirdly in all its forms.

For example: You ARE a slavmoron. See? It works as an affirmation here despite being an auxiliary. That's kind of an exception though.
                >>it was just bantz bro
I just gave you a nice advice at first, actually. You sperged out so I had some fun with it.

                >You mistook me capitalising a word to indicate a voice inflection for a grammar mistake,
It is because it doesn't carry the meaning you think it does in that particular sentence as has been explained to you.
                Sorry bro, you're a midwit.

I know you don't understand that and probably still don't understand why despite the explanations, but that's the way it is.
Even if it has made you incredibly mad that somebody pointed it out to you (nicely I might add). You've been butthurt ever since.
                >>inb4 reee you can't capitalise that either
You can, but the fact that you still doubt recognize the difference proves that you haven't understood the lesson.
Funfact: In Mein Kampf Hitler argued that contrary to "a moron or a chinaman" a slav could be Germanized by teaching them the German language and culture because slavs are human, after noting that even the most Germanist circles had begun to accept that the Austrians could succeed with their attempts to Germanize the slavs in their territory.

PS: Both of those posts are by me and that's not even supposed to be a secret, this isn't reddit where people care if you double post to reply to 2 different posts, especially if one came in as you responded to the other.
You said you'd give me one last reply before, it's been a few posts since then, do you think you've moved the conversation far enough away from your previous embarrassment now that you can go to bed without agonizing about the opinions of anonymous strangers online about your low IQ?

Consider how slow and low the missiles fly.
The Gepard would hit anything the Russians have been using to attack cities if positioned right.
But they haven't really sent a lot to be honest so I would be concerned the defensive ability would be limited to only a few KM across for smaller targets.

biggest difference between shilka and gepard is range, 30mm with the subcalibre frangible reaches basically twice as far as 23mm API, which in practice means 4 times the engangement area

and of course higher velocity and better BC means more accurate fire at equivalent ranges, less time for the target to deviate from the predicted trajectory.

Incidentally the Russians reduced gas supplies by another 20 percent. Now it's only the last 20 percent left.
Apparently this was their game all along, flows were reduced as a response to German weapon shipments, but they kept finding all kind of silly excuses, so nobody picked up on it. Now they had to explicitly hint on it hint hint hint.

I wonder what they'll do from now on, if they cut the final 20% after the next shipment, or if they go 10% 5% and so on to always be able to show that they're retaliating.

The issue is not German domestic heating. Nobody at the strategic level cares about this.

The issue is German (and Dutch and British and French and especially Polish) military industry. All the factories run on gas, whether directly or indirectly. Further, a lack of gas means more civilian industrial reliance on diesel fuel, which eventually requires use of the strategic oil reserve for military use, which means Germany has a time limit (in their case, supposedly 90 days) on how long its own military can remain operational.

The Germans are not going to freeze to death this winter, there is no concern of this at any level. The threat is essentially to their military operational capacity and their ability to continue manufacturing of military assets, which becomes more and more necessary as they continue supplying Ukraine.

oil is not the issue Germany reduced its dependence to 12% month ago already. It's expensive but mostly irrelevant.

Why does german industry need gas? To mold metal into shape? Last I heard, Sweden invented an electric method for that. The only problem left would be power generation.

            1) Household heating.
            2) Chemical industry, the gas itself is raw material in many processes from plastic to fertilizer, paint to medicine.
            3) To generate electricity when wind and solar don't yield enough, this is for households and energy intensive industry like metal melting (steel, aluminium). This can be replaced with coal and oil. However, only gas can be turned on and off quickly, other methods waste more and therefore cost more.

Priority has been always be at 1.
2 might have to be tuned down, just in case there is a problem with getting the first LNG port online (december or january?) and the reserves must be stretched to march or so.
3 will be replaced with other, more costly and co2 intensive sources. Also there is frantic activity to further develop wind, solar and methods to capture and release energy like hydrogen pilot projects, but those will first yield results in years.

Anyway, Russian gas and oil is done for Europe. Russia has fucked up itself for good.

They'll never completely cut the gas (unless open war breaks out between ru and de, but that is astronomically unlikely). Choking it down (supply reduction at constant demand) means higher prices, which means there's a balance point at which they make the optimal amount of money while simultaneously crippling German military industry. A professional international economist could tell you exactly where that point might be, but I can't.

Well, that's not strictly true. The USD is weakening, which we see right now as a weakening of the currencies pegged to the dollar such as the Euro. Meanwhile, the sanctions, particularly the severance of Russian access to SWIFT, has effectively depegged the ruble from the dollar, so if you assume the dollar will continue to slip further, Russia stands to benefit from any trade treaty they sign now that obligates payment in rubles in perpetuity. This is why they made such a big deal of wanting Eurostates to pay in rubles: it's a simultaneous hedge against a potential collapse of the dollar, and a chance at considerable profit if they assume that trade with the West is not going to return to previous levels.

I doubt that this 90 day timer will come into play. Germany will be supplied by other countries like Norway, the UK, the USA or some Arabian country.

I doubt so too, but it's essentially a negotiating tactic. It's not an existential threat to Germany directly, but it does force a shift in finite resources (shipping capacity, port facilities, industrial consumption and production) that they are not immediately prepared for, which buys the Russians some initiative in negotiation.

The really interesting thing is that the Gulf countries seem to be unable (or perhaps just stubbornly unwilling, it's really hard to say without what I'm sure is highly classified economic intelligence, especially with the Saudis) to increase oil production, which seems to indicate the Chinese and Russians have beat the West to the punch in negotiations with the Arabs. This bodes well for the yuan and ruble, and poorly for the so-called petrodollar.

that's still not enough to satisfy their needs. Africa has nothing to offer besides raw materials which is the one thing that Russia has in abundance. Turkey and Syria are nothing compared to the EU and USA. Also they can dictate the conditions if they know that Russia needs them.

                >Africa has nothing to offer besides raw materials which is the one thing that Russia has in abundance.
Russia has oil, uranium, arms, and food in vast quantities. More importantly, it has a willingness to sell them to pretty much anybody. In terms of domestic resources they are much better-positioned to trade with China than any African state.

What Russia needs, but cannot create itself, is high technology. Agricultural equipment, factory systems, and electronics are three areas in which they are very weak and are forced to import from the Europeans, but are also three areas in which the Chinese have started to aggressively compete with the Europeans. This is a very dangerous thing for Euro economies, which have benefited for the last century or so from (and become reliant upon) the US paying for research and development of this tech.

Russia's willingness to trade doesn't mean as much as its logistical or political capacity to trade. That is to say, there's a limit to what their China facing pipelines can deliver in terms of hydrocarbons, and they're pretty much at it, and they face significant constraints in moving other commodities. Vladivostok just isn't as well connected as they'd like, and their land borders with China are currently being shunned in favor of the Khazakh routes due to sanctions (i.e. Urumqi to Almaty). China could belt 'n road Russian infrastructure into efficacy, and they've already start funding such infrastructure in their Northern satellite states, but Russia's aims here aren't to lose further influence along their southern border.

On Chinese agricultural equipment; they're still second to European and American companies in terms of quality and features, and with Western companies currently exiting China, especially in an R&D capacity, they're going to have to work harder to continue to bridge that gap. Shout out to their pig farming though, they've got that shit down.

Sorry meant to include this image. Note that much of Russia's hydrocarbon production capacity has no pipeline route to China just now.

                >there's a limit to what their China facing pipelines can deliver in terms of hydrocarbons
Also a limit on how much chinks are willing to buy. Temporarily they are willing to buy max capacity to fill their reserves, but they are not willing to become dependent on russian resources like europeans were.

this also they buy a lot because it is cheap as fuck. russia eats a lot of these costs. Even prewar russia apparently sold at a 5$ discount. Now it's 25-35 depending on the partner.

you can redirect 180gcf if you have 2 LNG ports and a pipeline with 1/10 of the capacity needed.

sure you can build more but 1 you need the tech. (you buy chink they want "free"gas for it) you need the money to build now. the profits come after 10 years. Ofc you can just print money for that but thats just committing economical sodoku

Actually, I think they are. The whole thing with BRICS being classified as "emerging economies" isn't a slur against their GDP, it's an acknowledgment that those five countries are going to be ever more hungry for trade, especially with each other.

Let me be clear: do I expect some big vatnik wet dream of the US collapsing into a civil war and the Euros resorting to cannibalism as they freeze to death? Certainly not. But I do think the BRICS states are economically much, much more important than most people think. China and India will vacuum up all the cheap gas the Russians will sell them, and in return provide the sophisticated agricultural and manufacturing technology that Russia previously bought from the EU. Brazil and South Africa are filled to the brim with minable metals.

On top of all this, the Chinese are aggressively (really it cannot be understated how fast they are doing this) expanding into Africa to acquire natural resources.

If the dollar continues to inflate, the effects on these five economies will be immense. So we can argue whether or not they can make up for Russia's loss of the West as trading partner now, it's already debatable, but what about in ten, even five, years? This, I think, is the core of Russia's strategy.

Turkey hasn't signed the sanctions. Iran is open for business.
Africa is what they attempt as well.

Turkey AND Syria have started to distance themselves from Russia. Hell Erdogan let Putin wait for like a minutes in front of cameras in their latest meeting

Turkey plays a game all its own, they are fiercely independent of the conventional West/East paradigm. This is probably a wise choice.

That is the worst way to do this though.
You want sanctions to be swift and decisive. Slowly reducing the gas while allowing Germany to find other suppliers was a major mistake. The effects of a complete shutoff are now merely minor, as 80% are already gone.

If Putin would have gone all the way immediately Scholz would have no reason to delay anymore and could have just gone all-in for voter approval.

Let me quote some random anon real quick:
          >There's obviously a balancing act between their own interests and support for Ukraine. They've sent quite a lot already, why does nobody ever acknowledge that and pretend they could just send heaps of soviet equipment and get new shit for it like much of the east? Supporting Ukraine is purely based on morality and peer pressure with no past connections to the country justifying it, taking care of their own citizens is a politicians duty. Nearly all countries supporting Ukraine benefit from it, Germany doesn't. You could argue it might in the long term, but it definitely doesn't right now and won't for quite a while.
          >Italy sends basically nothing and they just killed their own government 2 days ago with the parties that are pro-Putin or at least so uninterested in the conflict that they want to send nothing at all bound to take over because the citizens are on their side, simply because italy does not benefit from fucking with Russia. The reason the media focuses on Germany is because Germany can be influenced with plenty of moralfags in the population who demand more be sent to Russia because Ukraine are the good guys, try that with italy and they'll tell you to go fuck yourself after they finish laughing.
          >I always see the same people who demand help from Germany saying they deserve to freeze and die in the winter as if the average voter had any influence on Russian gas imports, but regardless what your opinion on retarded economic policy in the past is, that's the hand they're dealt.

          >So tldnr: Objectively Germany has no reason to support Ukraine, yet they do and if we're honest about it more than can be reasonably expected from them. If you believe they sent very little or nothing you fell for propaganda and butthurt tourist spam.

Only if you assume that Germany benefits from conflict with Russia. The Germans don't and know they don't (but can't just outright admit it, being the "regional power" and basically NATO spokesman in the EU), the Russians know they know, so the Russians are using to opportunity to make some rubles off of Germany being caught between US/NATO's desire for expansion of the war and their own domestic economic interests.

There is no Ruble to make though. Russia's economy has already crashed and is on the way to become another Venezuela.

BS, these things are only for propaganda, nothing more.

It's not even something useful like the Himars or the Caesars. The M777s were a complete waste of time. Ukraine had guns that could do the M777s job ez.

This is yet another propaganda hype, that has 0 effect on the battlefield.

A self propelled anti aircraft gun when the russians don't even fly inside Ukranian airspace, cz they are more scared of their own, soviet era SAMs.

I'm starting to think that some military experts are right when they say, NATO armies would bleed to death in a ground war against Russia.

Based on the German MoD there was a delay because the Gepard got a requested upgrade.

Experts speculate that the Ukraine Gepards got the Qatar upgrade which give them some excellent anti-drone capabilities.

Modern militaries should be in a panic for a cheap drone counter. Something like this could work when paired with a laser detection system like for starstreak. Paint the sky with a laser and if you get a return then light it up. It'll fix the pigeon problem.

Didn't Brazilians specifically get gepards because they were so effective against drones in their trials? I think I remember them commenting about the distance between the guns being longer than most drones, though that doesn't seem to hurt its effectiveness.
