gepard

how did they nail that design in the 70s so perfectly that it even outperforms pantsirs to this day?

Does it? In any case 35mm is a really good caliber so it might play a role.

Do you have any sources for Pantsir performance data?
      I'm interested.

just look up how many drones the ukies intercepted using gepards (a lot) against how many the ukies intercepted using pantsirs (not a lot)

        They captured some.
I imagine that it isn't easy to learn how to operate an air defence system by trial and error lol.

        pants down so far

        21 Pantsir-S1: (1, destroyed) (2, abandoned and destroyed) (3, destroyed) (4, destroyed) (5, destroyed) (6, destroyed) (7, destroyed) (8, destroyed) (9, destroyed) (10, destroyed) (11, destroyed) (12, destroyed) (13, destroyed) (14, destroyed) (15, destroyed) (16, destroyed) (1, damaged) (2, damaged) (3, damaged) (1, captured) (2, captured)

        Irrelevant

        So no practical data.
Meh, will have to compare specs then

yeah good job comparing the specs of a papertiger system to a working system.

Does Gepard have missiles with 20km range? With new missiles going up to 40km range?

See, there's a trick to it.
Gepard's unguided shells actually hit their targets.
      Pantsir's guided missiles, well...

        >Gepard's unguided shells actually hit their targets.
        At 20 km range?
Point is Gepard protected target can be be bombed by planes with LGBs with impunity, or picked up by KA-52/AH-64 from 8 km range like it happen during Ukrainian counteroffensive and short legged Gepard can't do anything about it.
Yeah Gepard is good for cheaply shooting down flying mopeds , and that's it.

BTW Russians develop new short range cheapo missile for Pantsir to cover Pantsir guns weaknesses.
Unironically updated Pantsir is the best SHORAD ever made.

(Left is new 40km missile, right is new short range mini missile for drone hunt, 4 If such fit in the place of 1 old).

          >Yeah Gepard is good for cheaply shooting down flying mopeds , and that's it.
Sounds like Russia could use a few Gepards then given how mopeds have been wrecking its refineries

          >BTW Russians develop new short range cheapo missile for Pantsir to cover Pantsir guns weaknesses
          Can it hit anything?

          > short legged Gepard can't do anything about it
Doesn't seem like the Pantsir's mobility has helped it evade destruction much

If you want to go like that.
Considering Ukraine losses material and personal every day to Lancet and FPV drones Gepard ain't doing good job.

Given the length of the frontline, they'd need at least 300 of them. They have a bit over 100, and a lot of them have to do guard duty around cities and ports.

It's not mobility. If you only have guns and no missiles you're at the mercy of enemy missiles.
A good SHORAD should have guns for cheap close range work, small missiles for good volume of fire at 5km range, and large missiles to defend against enemy that can threaten it from further away while still staying low against long range AD such as helicopters lopping missiles.

The currently-available VSHORAD platforms all have various drawbacks, due to their basic designs dating back a decade or more. The best-rounded design available with current OTS tech would combine the 30 mm AHEAD gun (for close range) with the APKWS II (or equivalent) pod (for cheap short range) and a few longer-ranged MANPADS (preferably something that can reliably reach 9 km).

A 20km range missile that can't hit shit is worthless. A 40km range missile that can't hit shit is STILL worthless.

          >Unironically updated Pantsir is the best SHORAD ever made.
If it wasn't for it failing at doing basic SHORAD more often than not, that is. As always with russkie garbage, on-paper stats are meaningless and in-reality performance is shit.

It was REALLY cutting edge at the time. Twice the pricetag of a contemporary MBT.
Russian 2010s tech is loosely comparable to 1970s cutting edge western tech (theoretically higher specs, but massive QC issues)

    Kraut Space Magic.

Basically, when the krauts do something, it's either a hilariously overcomplicated autistic maintenance nightmare or absolute perfection in design. Sometimes it somehow manages to be both.

    Consider the following:
Don't cram SHORAD and MRAD capacities into one vehicle, use vehicles in batteries with different specialized vehicles.
(Also Gepard can mount Stingers, it's just not a common occurrence)
