I am somewhat skeptical of the original account. I'm sure most of it is correct, but I think it was written to appeal to the anti-Iraq War zeitgeist of the time. It is more of a tone problem than a facts problem. They wanted another Vietnam and so they forced one into existence. Also

      >Remaining 10% of the time spent fucking up and making retarded decisions, somehow still win
      Yes, this is it exactly.

has been true of every single war since monkeys started throwing rocks at each on different sides of a river.

        >but I think it was written to appeal to the anti-Iraq War zeitgeist of the time
I think that all the "clusterfuck" stuff is really just how it looks from the ground level. A masterstroke of maneuver warfare on a map might appear like a retard derby from a grunt's POV. Plenty of mistakes are made when you're moving that fast, but you really, really, REALLY won't like fighting a war that moves slow.

As I said, the facts are likely correct, but the tone is extremely suspect. You don't see similar books written about Gulf 1.

There are two books which are largely similar in account, both Nate Fick's book and the reporter tell almost the same story. Not saying it's true just adds more doubt that it would have been pushing a narrative. Fick's book is about his whole military career as well so would be weird if he slipped in some propaganda

I dunno, I just have pretty strong memories of 2003 and how saturated the anti-Iraq War media was. Everything associated with the war was negative, even things that had nothing to do with what people were really complaining about (the reasons for going to war in the first place).

It's like you wrote all the facts of Band of Brothers and zeroed in on problems like the incompetent training officer, how they got dropped randomly in Normandy, and the Market Garden shitshow that led to Bastonge. You could easily make the facts negative if you didn't like the war itself, and it wouldn't necessarily be "propaganda".

                >the Market Garden shitshow that led to Bastonge
Not only Market Gargen, which was a brit shitshow after all, but also the real cause of that winter stalemate was the US failure to break german lines in the Hürtgen forest, a mostly forgotten but huge battle were the germans also defeated the US:

Honestly wished I figured out this earlier. Once I realized that everybody was kinda retarded like me and is just navigating life/jobs or whatever in their own way, it made me into a much better human being. Shame I spent 20 years being retarded before figuring it out.

Me either man. Went to the First Gulf War. We always thought we would be in for a WW2-style fight. We were ready to bayonet the Republican Guard. To throw grenades into machine gun nests. To lay on barbed wire. We trained so hard, and but our heart and soul into it. But, I never fired a shot in anger, or even had the enemy in my sights. Now my hair is getting grey. Anyway, Jarhead is the movie for us, my war didn't get many movies.

Remember anon, the Marine Corps does not revolve around infantry, it caters to it. Going infantry means that if you fail rifle qual you can blame the PoGs in the armory for giving you bad equipment, if you have a field exercise that you’re unit is bad at your leadership will comfort you and announce how you’re all hot shit, etc. In all seriousness, infantry has the largest gap between skill: the bar is so low you have to dig it up, but the dudes who excel at it make you question why they aren’t at a higher billet. Unless you’re a 0331, then you’re just retarded.
Super pro-tip: don’t join logistics, it’s a nightmare and a wonder how anything gets fulfilled with how half-assed the planning and communication from line company XOs are. Please, just give us more than two hours notice, even a day would be nice.

Pendleton is in Southern California. It’s proximity to San Diego alone makes it the best. But if you want to be a real Marine, you’ll get stationed at 29 Palms. That’s where all the good training happens. It’s not as hot as people say and you get to swim in beautiful lake bandini whenever you want!

Depends on which MEF you get assigned to. If you’re 2nd (east coast 4 lyfe) you’ll get more opportunities to go out and train with NATO because typically the units over there get assigned to that type of training. If you end up in I MEF you’re more likely to only train with Royal Marines, and even then only at Bridgeport which requires you to be almost exclusively in a victor unit. If you want to get to a victor unit and hate your life go be an armorer or an optics tech, with the later the opportunity to totally not build your own thermal systems, PVS-14s, PVS-31s now, or PEQ-16Bs because of the ready access to ordering parts. As an aside, most of the time thermals go bad they don’t grunts just don’t know how to manually calibrate them or turn auto-calibration back on (or check to see if it is on really). This exact reason lead to a Corporal I know owning a pair of PAS-28s, a couple 13Gs, and a 13D v3. Profit off the retardation, but NCIS is always waiting around the corner to see if you’ll sell your self-imposed tax return.

Are MEF's assigned by any controllable variable or is it just at random?

If you’re referring to which one you fall under, depends on your MOS. For grunts it’s usually based off of where you go to ITB (west vs east coast, which in turn is based off of where you went to bootcamp with everything west of the Mississippi going to San Diego and everything east is Paris Island). You can somehow end up on the opposite coast but that’s largely due to manpower requirements. Any other MOS you get assigned based off of manpower and who is requesting replacements. Every other MOS goes through MCT, 1 month of combat training then off to their school house which ranges from 1 month to 1.5 years. They also recently redid ITB so it’s now a bit longer than it used to be.

I feel like I was the only motherfuckers ever who went to bootcamp and rifleman school on the east coast and then LAV school on the west coast. Every other 0313 did 0311 school in Cali.

It depends which MEF and which unit. for instance, my unit trains with multiple other countries multiple times a year while while another unit here with the same mos is stuck in their office all day everyday

If a serious revolution kicks off in Iran, US might take the opportunity to go in an liberate it. Who's coming to Iran's aid?

Not too hard to get UN consensus in the GA for ending/fixing the human rights shitshow that is Iran.

A UN-authorised invasion of Iran isn't out of the question.
There's always Taiwan, I think that will have boots on the ground in Taiwan but you're just going to be cowering in bunkers and probably not actually fight, just be there as a political shield to make China hesitate to invade. You never know though.

I would anticipate NATO "peace-keepers" in Russian/Ukraine border regions after Russia gets pushed back to '91 borders. Once hostilities end, NATO can roll-in and dare Russia to start something.

Only if they were retarded about it.
Just removing the religious police and government figures and letting the locals replace them would do fine.

It could be a Libya style thing where airstrikes remove the means of control of the population and then you sit back and let the locals take care of business now that they're unleashed.

I think it could work conventionally though, massive local support would be present, there's been repeated examples in recent history that when US goes in somewhere, they pull out sooner or later.
Just clearly target it at leadership and then make sure to leave asap before sentiment turns resentful.

Did you marry a vapid whore of a woman or did you marry a sensible woman who dislikes drama?

I love how Brad was the only Marine to consistently have fully loaded mags on his chest the whole show in case of a massive, WW2-tier firefight.

    Yeah.

You got the years of wasted life, long term health consequences and endured the suffering but got none of the stories for the grandkids.

    Cool assessment, Michael Moore.

Are there really so many spergs in the marine corps? Like whopper junior, captain america or the reservists? I thought this was supposed to be an elite formation but it looks like it's a mix of semi competent people, turbo autists and convicts let loose upon the enemy.

Just thought marines might be different. After all, when you think of the US army you probably think (ironically) about the marines.

Yes there are. Some of the smartest people I’ve ever met I met in the corps, but I always met some of the dumbest. The difference is professionalism and motivation. Marines hold themselves, and more importantly, each other, to a higher standard. It’s something you might not notice if you joined out of high school, but when you go back to civilian life, it’s a culture shock. Even guys I know who changed branches say that it’s different. The army feels laxidasical and the Air Force is just a corporarion you work for.

Using violent weirdos , autists , outcasts and convicts for war has been a thing since the dawn of war its self .

Me and the boys watched it on our first deployment in 2016. We were/are infantry and I promise you, it could not possibly be more true.

??? I've been out for almost another enlistment lol

        were did you go ?

First time was a fukkn booze cruise of a MEU. Libo ports in Sicily, Odessa, Romania, Seychelles, Dubai/UAE(? never left the sandbox, God bless those schwarma burgers), Oman, and Lisbon. Enlisted Navy is trash, their officers are fags, corpsmen get a pass. Second one was a weird short one in Syria during fall of 2017. There's a lot to say about that one but it's real frustrating to be an 03 with a combat deployment on record and not see combat. And no, I'm not some retarded shithead who got his rounds taken away, nobody in my company saw combat.

        You kill anyone????

Dawg I fucking wish, our post had a M240B, M2 loaded with SLAP, a LAAW, two AT-4s, our M4s, and a pen flare.
