I've seen some SF guys at a demonstration recently wearing a single AR mag on their belt at their 4 or 5 oclock, just behind the holster. For what purpose?

            >MFW no friends to do shit like this with cuz those with guns aren't motivated to

Anyway, I need advice /gq/. I've owned a Haley D3CRX for the last two years. I have a lot of time wearing it, doing all sorts of manual labor and some rucking with it.

I don't hate my chest rig, but I also don't love it. It floats at a level of "good enough" most of the time. I don't care for the 4 pistol mag pouches, and usually two are empty. One carries a handheld light and the other carries a backup pistol mag.I added an AXL sandwich bag for admin, and I am now considering adding PALS extensions and/or a dangler for medical.

Before I throw more money at this rig, I want to ask more experienced nerds if I am on the right track or if I should be looking for a whole new chest rig instead? What would you do in my case?

              Anonymous

All of Haley's products are poorly designed and shit for basically everything
              >D3CRM where you go prone and break all of your admin items and have 2 useless pistol mag pouches on the sides
              >D3CRX where you have 4 useless pistol mag pouches and it's too wide to fit on any plate carrier
              >D3CRXH where you get two oddly shaped zipper pouches and even more bullshit you can't use
              >Thorax which has zero innovative features and doesn't even have tubes
              >D3 belt which is identical to all other gunbelts
              >placard with fixed elastic tenspeeds on it so you have to stop using the tenspeeds or buy a whole new placard when the elastic gets worn out
Haley is a fricking moron who used ALICE gear for his whole USMC career in the 90s, and a basic Blackhawk chest rig when he worked for Blackwater. He knows absolutely nothing about designing gear and hasn't been in combat in almost 20 years.

He also almost cried on livestream when a bunch of other gun class guys basically called him a bloviating homosexual and said his classes were pseudoscience bullshit which didn't help anyone get better at shooting

those add-ons should work with another chest rig if you eventually get rid of it. You can always take the pistol mag pouches off with a seam ripper (or razor) to get rid of them. Or sell it and get a slimmer chest rig. I can kind of understand GP or admin pouches on the front if you're playing Ricky Recon, but I never understood the 4x pistol mag pouches.

Russian wood on a chinese spiker? Intredasting.

      Anonymous

What? It is very clearly just beat to shit chink wood, and even if it was Russian wood it wouldn't work with the spike folded.

        Anonymous

no, chinese wood never has either the concavity under the handguard or the strengthening pin just forward of it. You're right the spike wouldn't fit in a blade stock, unless the stock had material removed, which I think is the case. Also there appears to be a chip out of the varnish on the butt, but that could be something else. I've never seen chinese sks wood with chipping lacquer.

As for the shape of the stock in the handguard area, even this rare russian spike bayo model pictured here https://www.yooperj.com/SKS-27.htm has the straight cut spike bayonet stock profile you normally see on chinese spikers. The built up rounded area at the front of the stock is for blade bayonets only. I stand by my call, that is russian or possibly romanian wood on a chinese sks.

Incredibly cool kit. I have a question regarding chest rig + lbe however, at a long rest how would you drop equipment? Would you dump off the lbe and keep the rig on no matter what? I have a chest rig setup for a "grab and go 24hrs no resup" that I absolutely never take off when innawoods. Extra sustainment kit/ammo/ranger roll is kept in a belt pack that I could dump in a real pickle and still have the 24hr bare minimum load to survive.
Please post internals, your gear seems very thought out and I'd like to see if I'm missing anything critical

red - LBE (top to bottom) - headlamp, writing kit) ifak (bleed trauma), battery bank, 20-30ft 550 cord, body/ass wipes, triangle bandage (useful for pre filter pilled water), cleaning kit, AA’s, puffy jacket/pillow, 60rnds, poncho/tarp, knife, 2qts water, purifying pills, snacks, lens cloth, GPS, 2 tourniquet, bandana, compass/mirror, 2 lights with tape, flagging, chapstick/ointment, gum, snooter, gerber, spoon.
blue - chest rig - radio+spare bat, writing gear, 120rnds.
yellow - overnight pack - hard shell rain jacket, socks, 6ltr dromedary, water pills, pnutbutter, GP pouch x2, one is for snacks the other is for a cooking kit if needed, base layer, sleeping bag liner (my tootsies get cold), more 550 cord.

my chest rig is severally lacking and i put a lot of priority in my belt. the chest rig was definitely added last so i’m trying to implement it but to answer you, i’d drop it before the belt.
tho like everything it’s dependent on the my scenario. if it was a shooting focused event then id prolly drop the belt and go rig.
my big thing is water. i live in the SW and water locally is almost exclusively sourced from infrastructure and i’m a big water fan personally hence so much with me.

Mad cool loadout tbh, it's unfortunate about your local water situation. I can get by with only a 3l Camelback and pills due to how many fresh water streams and lakes are in my area. On the other side of the coin however I almost need chest waders to navigate the woods without getting soaked.
What pack are you using? That's a similar sustainment (comfort) load to me and I have difficulty fitting it into any lumbar pack system

              Anonymous

for 1-2 days, i have a AWS assault pack. it’s a tight fit but it forces me to be picky and not over do it. for multi day sustained movements i have a modern alice frame with a FILBE. more than enough space than i’d ever need while still sitting as comfy as it could be fully loaded and sits high to avoid interfering with the belt.

                Anonymous

By modern Alice frame you mean the DEI 1606 the FILBE was issued with or like a Malice?

                Anonymous

yep the filbe mounted on a dei 1606. found them separately for cheap. after using the alice for a decade, the filbe feels….about the same. still comfy but with the molle, it’s a natural improvement on a solid system. you can ratchet it down to compress it substantially while having a huge top lid that covers most of it for more critical items.

                Anonymous

Ah nice, I just got a 1606 frame in today and I've been working on getting a MOLLE II pad set on it since all the FILBE pad sets are torn to shit since Marines can't be bothered to take care of anything.
Alice frame with TT pad set was surprisingly comfortable so I hope this is another big step up.

i think the downside of the alice style once you begin to load it down heavy. the waist straps are point less in gear and shoulders really take it.
still, best pack i’ve used especially for quality and price, straight up works.

                Anonymous

I got the frame set up how I wanted but I encountered some issues with the packs themselves. I've got a Malice V.3 and an LBT 8 pocket ruck. On paper the Malice has better features and should be my pick, but in practice I really like the LBT.

The issues are the LBT top pocket is 2-3" longer than a normal Alice pocket so it doesn't fit down perfectly on the 1606 frame and actually sits up higher. To make it fit better I have to move the MOLLE II straps down on the frame which raises the frame higher on my back. May have to abandon the straps and just use a the Alice style ones that came with the ruck.
On the other hand the Malice fits way better but it has huge side pockets that interfere with the ears on the frame. Also, it doesn't attach as tightly at the bottom due to the straps being meant for the Malice solid frame.
I know I can make either work I just have to decide which I want to go with. Going to get my gear together and ready to pack for some hikes this weekend and see what happens.

The 1192 is literally one of the worst plates you can possibly buy. Too many reasons to list here. Believe it or not, RMA literally sent Buffman a 'special' overbuilt 1192.

        Anonymous

Not just overbuilt (way thicker and heavier than advertised) they outright changed the strikeface composition from Boron to Silicon Carbide. One has to wonder if they wanted to look better on the tungsten-core threats Buffman was gonna send its way.

I just checked their webpage and LO AND FRICKING BEHOLD, they havent updated their page to reflect the "real, totally a serial production 1192" that Buffman got sent. Still advertised as Boron Carbide, still advertised as 5.9lbs and .9in thick but now 100 dollars cheaper. There are much better options at its price point.
SIDENOTE: Hoplite finally started selling LTC 28601, for 3000/pair. Standalone X-threat capable plates, so M993 at 3050fps. God bless Adept, we are finally moving into the IV+/ V timeline for top-end plates. Now up to three companies offer M993 or better plates on the open market with no bullshit, SAS, Adept and now Hoplite.

Wait why does it say LTC if RMA the one making them?

You're confused. RMA's responsible for the scam-tier 1192. LTC just released the 28601, which is a good plate.

What does SAS offer that's IV+? I need to upgrade my plates since all I have is 2010 DOM L DEA surplus plates. I hate large plates.

            Anonymous

They have a version of the Hexar plate that is tested for 3 hits of M993. it was 799 per 10x12, 7.8lbs.

ADDITIONALLY, they are selling 10x12 segments of their M993 rated dragonskin (the version that works actually this time). One version is ICW IV+ (M993), III standalone (really RF2, M855). The other version is Standalone for M993. The real downside there is that those panels weigh 8.8lbs. 1250 dollars for the Standalone 10x12 version.

On the whole, their offerings are cool., but Id be hard pressed to buy the Dragonskin over the LTC 28601 for 300/plate more, its like 3lbs lighter (6.2lbs) and thinner too (.83 inches thick, zero drop protection). The Hexar plate is cool as well. Adepts offering is pretty weight and price competitive as well. At least there are options for above IV standard now.

              Anonymous

There's no reason to buy the SAS products over the Adept Colossus, which is lighter and tougher. Unless you want or need extended coverage, because SAS can make a BALCS-cut armor panel, out of either Hexar or Dragonskin2.
Draft /gq/ armor flowchart attached. Anything you'd add?

Out of the box they're pretty mediocre but a few upgrades (like a better antenna, battery, and some method to protect the volume knob & ptt) and programming it with non-moronic settings makes it pretty simple to get some basic comms going for you and some buddies. Their weakest points are the easy to press ptt, shitty mic, and lack of water resistence. Use them to figure out what works for you, but don't let a $20 radio be the end all, be all.

They work. You can communicate between frens. Be aware that they may be DOA or kill themselves after a while.
I took my UV9R out yesterday and it was busted. I could not hear anything with the onboard speaker or on my Comtacs through my PTT.
That being said for the capability it is second to none. Buy one and learn how o use it.

Lipstick on a pig, mosins are pretty shitty compared to any bargain bin hunting rifle in accuracy, ammo availability, and smoothness of action. The mosin's only comparitive value is as a relatively cheap piece of soviet history. It almost made sense when a mosin was 80 bucks and a good rifle was 500, now that good rifles are 300 and mosins are 400 there is no reason unless all you have is a mosin and all you will ever have is a mosin.
No reason to do it plus you're bubbaing a gun.

A bit of a strange question, but I have some large sapi cut plates that are a little too tall for both my manlet pearmode body and my plate carrier. My question is, can ceramic plates be cut at all? Will the thing shatter if I try to cut 3/4 inch off the bottom and reseal it? Will it harm its effectiveness? I haven't been able to find any examples of this, probably for obvious reasons, but I'm curious to know if such a thing can be attempted. I've got access to a large workshop and nearly every sawblade that exists so that isn't a problem.

assuming its a baofeng, it has a really small footprint. Just try to keep it all in one manageable spot, ie on the front non dominant hand side. That way you can frick with it if you need to but cable management is important so you're not a tangled mess. Fold the cables together and ziptie/tape them together. I always keep my PTT on my left collar bone which is my non dom side, and i keep the radio in a cell on my kit right below that so the antenna and radio are both manageable and accessible.

Baffin boots are super warm. Most of them are made more for standing still (ice fishing, hunting in a blind, etc). I wore them dog sledding at -40 and was fine. Usually though I wore my Salomon Quests and as long as I was moving and used wool socks I was fine. The Salomon Toundra is also a great choice for really cold wet winters and is a good middle ground between regular hiking boot and Antarctica moon boots.

Think about it for a minute. Hard armor dick flap would suck so fricking bad in multiple ways. Aside from potentially smacking you in the balls when moving, it would inhibit running, potentially make it hard to crouch, kneel, or go prone.

5"9, about 190. Absolutely real. I bought it because it had tubes on the cummerbund and shoulders, was placard compatable, highly adjustable around the shoulders, and took are large sapi sized plate which is in the rear only. Not too many options that check all those boxes for a similar price in the 200s range. Shellback was the perfect option but most of them only take 10x12s and I already had a large plate.

I'm aware. I'm one of their product testers. One of the ones they apparently haven't listened to until their newest plate carrier. And they still insist on using the dog shit cumberbund.

It's a little different, but works good enough and is stretchy in the right spots. It can easily be adapted to any other cummerbund with a placard on the front and a conversion flap on the back if you wanted to replace it.

What don't you like about it? I haven't had it for a really long time so I haven't really found any glaring problems with it yet. The only thing I can think of would be the tube on the front needing to be cut in order to use an aftermarked cummberbund that velcroed to a front placard. Otherwise it seems pretty standard.

If the product is fine, I'm fine with it. They can do wierd business shit all they want, like make 20,000 fake reviews on their site, but if the end result of the product is the same then I'm not concerned. I felt the same with H-S Precision stocks and them associating with the Ruby Ridge guy, it doesn't really bother me. Good stock is a good stock. Don't really matter as long as it's good.

I think he's just trolling, bro.
Agilite are so famous for fake reviews and shilling that it's kind of hilarious.

I'm aware. I'm one of their product testers. One of the ones they apparently haven't listened to until their newest plate carrier. And they still insist on using the dog shit cumberbund.
