Sorry bud but these kind of threads are useless without at least a plywood mockup

Ah yes the GCAP, where brits and japs will take twice as long as the Americans to deliver technology half as good. Love the enthusiasm of you losers in these threads, although nothing beats the FCAS guys these days, because that shit is never going to see the light of day.

I hope it's good because I want our allies to have good kit.

You are grossly overestimating the capabilities of the britnips, everyone already knows its going to be a eurofighter/rafale evo, at best will be a 75% f35

Idk, japan has never worked with anyone really besides the US, and the UK is usually shackled to continental European desires which aren't aligned with their island nations'.
The UK and Japan, and to a lesser extent Italy all share common geographic similarities that will make a joint project like this more feasible.
They all want a jet designed to operate primarily in coastal areas with a high degree of stealth and a need for long sortie range to complement the shorter range F-35s all 3 of these countries will have in their fleets for the next 50 years.

they're actually committing a significant few billions on this, I'm impressed

There has been talk about Saudi Arabia joining as primarily a financial backer, but Japan seems against them joining GCAP as an equal partner and will likely push for them being an export customer at most.

Japan/UK/Italy have the political will and a decent budget to go with it, so hopefully all goes well. I guess theoretically japan could dip into their foreign reserves for some extra funding if it came down to it, though I'm not sure which Japan would rather do, dip into their rainy day fund or let Saudia Arabia join the program. Time will tell.

I think it'll depend how deep the Sauds go into BRICS
UK won't sell 5th gen jets to anti-NATO interests I think, only allies and actual neutrals

Why don't the Germs and Frogs just join them? Saudis are kinda iffy as a partner, I think.

6th gen, you mean? The F-35 remains the only 5th gen for sale in the market and will likely continute to be for foreseeable future.

Germany doesn't need/want a large long range maritime patrol interceptor. They just want something for flying around continental Europe watching out for migs and suhkois

Similarly, France wants a 6th gen fighter that can be navalized for their carrier. Which is a drastic departure from what Japan/UK/Italy seemingly want.

He's implying only NGAD and F/A-XX will actually be 6th gen and GCAP will by virtue of not being a US project, will be 5th gen, or 5.5/5+ gen.

Do we know anything new about the US 6th gen yet? I don't think we even have any official graphic rendering yet.

From the released silhouettes and public comments it's most likely going to be a tailless, fat piece of shit twin engine two/three seater explicitly designed to act as a stealty mini-AWACS for a fleet of drones.
Basically it's going to have more in common with the B-21 than with F-35

I have no idea at this point what is 5th or 6th gen

              >though I'm not sure which Japan would rather do, dip into their rainy day fund or let Saudia Arabia join the program.
UK and Italy both have about $200B each in their foreign reserves, Japan is sitting on $1.2T, so Japan should be capable of supplying the funds Saudi Arabia is promising if push comes to shove.

Though obviously they'll plan their budgets in a way where they won't need to touch that larger pool of money unless shit really starts getting worse geopolitically in the next few years.

Saudi involvement was supposed to be resolved at the end of last year, the fact nothing has been announced regarding their partnership makes me think they've been quietly snubbed. And rightly so, introducing another major partner this far along (one who brings little other than capital) would be insane. Especially since they're of dubious allegiance and the public in each of these countries aren't keen on arming Saudis anyway.

Because they're building FCAS with Spain. Which everyone should be thankful for, the French are headstrong and keen to quit projects rather than compromise and the Germans seem to go out of their way to sabotage everything they touch. Having both contained in one program is a blessing for everyone else.

Pretty much this. GCAP has all the countries that should participate in it. Germany would frick it up, and the Frogs would steal the tech and make a Rafale 2.

There are clear differences? What do people mean with "looking like F-22" anyway? Does the F-15 look like Su-27 because they are both twin-engine and twin-tail?
