Shady Sands getting nuked not being mentioned by npcs (a relatively minor retcon since the NCR was already depicted as pretty fricked post Tandi) and the end cards of the last episode showing the debris from a conflict between Mr House and the NCR (which is fricking canon in New Vegas anyways but muh slopslop spammers actively seek reasons to be upset)

We're talking about a game with enough detail in its portrayal of the faction that we know they had to switch from gold-backed to water reserve backed currency, and that is a major factor in the state we see them in.

Shady Sands was destroyed in 2281 or 82, so after the events of New Vegas.

The Fall proceeds the explosion, hence the arrows. The Fall could be referring to the various troubles in the central NCR mentioned in New Vegas. 2277 is what the survivors in Vault 4 consider "the beginning of the end".

You gotta speak to the guys in Sloan in FNV to understand the situation. The NCR money is not worth a lot because they aren't fixed in value. This is why NCR money has a different exchange rate with caps, depending on your barter skill and the skill of the merchant you deal with. NCR is a commodity, like anything else. Caps are fixed against the price of a bottle of clean water at 20 caps per bottle.

Bethesda greenlit the script and also removed posts that they were already thinking of using for future games. It also makes sense because Bethesda really likes to use simple factions and now there are only BoS, Enclave and the super evil Vault-Tec.

Todd has mentioned multiple times for at least the last decade about how much he wanted a Fallout movie/TV show to happen, and you damn well know he is internally seething beyond belief for how much Fallout 4 got clowned on regarding the story/lore/general Bethesdaness of it. And you also already know that whatever he was feeling then only skyrocketed after the joke that was Starfield came out, all made even worse since he is pretty much the face of Bethesda. His petty ass is definitely targeting everything from the old Fallouts, whether its the first two or New Vegas, to wipe it all clean so its all nothing but Bethesda’s moronic bullshit like what the mouse did with Sneed Wars. Which just makes me that much less enthusiastic for TES 6 assuming that ever even releases.

            >We need a 50s design because that's all we know
And yet we got G-11 and Jackhammers in Fallout 2, even that laser Thompson from New Vegas was cool

Don’t forget the 10mm pistol which has been in Fallout since literally day one.

            >Oh, and to buying a few seconds of commercials that everyone tries to talk over or ski
anon, I always remind people that if your IQ is an uncomfortable heat in Fahrenheit, you're already in the top 30%. You're somewhat relevant insofar as you're likely going to earn more and thus spend more, but cumulatively the rest of the pop is still pretty valuable to the producers of goods and services, and whatever behaviours you perform to avoid being advertised to only demonstrate that those ads aren't for you. There are hordes of morons out there that more than make up for the probably 15-30% of us that skip them.

Personally I just hate whatever I see advertised by default with few exceptions. Not even because of le psyopping behind it, but rather that the ads just flat out fricking suck and most of the time the product is just garbage anyways. I genuinely don’t understand how that shit works insofar as getting people to consoom. Maybe I’m just a contrarian or something.

That's exactly it. It's wiping the slate clean so bethesda could putz around the core region instead of there being a split development between bethesda making the numbered games and maybe some old gays coming in every now and then making new vegas 2 or some other "side" projects.

I could even "get" it if it was still ethnically homogenized.

After all after leaving earth and creating colonies all the previous earth races would intermix so much that whatever you get 200+ years later would be a new ethnicity.

The fact ethnicity are by and large still around means that even after leaving earth, humanity keeps itself segregated (yet they still prefer to hang out in the same city instead of creating separate colonies)

And that's where diversity settings fail: any cultural mixture of any society would realistically be rather short lived, a few generations at most. Any holdup in that process is because of some sort of racial segregation of some kind that keeps people from mixing. It's a self defeating concept which funnily enough makes their "non racist society" appear even MORE racist once you think about it.

in anything resembling more serious disaster depiction one of the first thing that happens is breakdown into groups via common denominators like race and then further into ethnics. Yes, but it's canonically a semi auto pistol because of poor communication about it during the development of the first game.
                >game designer tells artist it's an auto revolver
                >programmer only hears the auto part
                >gives it a 12 round mag and a description of being semi auto
                >animator does reload animations as swapping box mags
                >no one catches it until it's too late to fix
                >decide not to fix it for the release of second game
But yeah, people that can't appreciate shit like that being included instead of the Bethesda N99 10mm pistol don't have a leg to stand on when pissing and moaning about respecting canon.

There's more to a show than little videogame references, moron-kun. I couldn't care less that they have the OG pistol or the wasteland survival guide or the water chip in there. The whole thing is just bethesda nonsense and retreading of the same stories with the same factions all over again, they killed off all the west coast factions to make a story about the enclave and the botherhood of steel, if this is canon all games will follow suit. Do i really have to explain why this is idiotic?

We're talking about a game with enough detail in its portrayal of the faction that we know they had to switch from gold-backed to water reserve backed currency, and that is a major factor in the state we see them in.

                >anon can't read
The implication is that the nuke is detonated sometime after 2277 and "The Fall of Shady Sands", which could be after the events of NV.

Its pretty clear that Shady sands got nuked around 2277 not after Fallout New vegas. The truth is that the writers for the show only played 3 and 4 so they think thats the whole world of fallout. This cope that "lol they just messed up the dates" is moronic since something like that happening isn't something you would forget when it happened.

With both KOTOR 2 and New Vegas, I think Obsidian did a pretty good job of putting a thematic end on two franchises that'll never be allowed to have actual ends. Both want to ruminate on the nature and direction of their worlds and then ask the player what they think. NV in particular was never going to be the last Fallout, but feels like it was written to be the end of Fallout if that makes sense.

I do find it a bit distasteful to end the world a second time so casually, for seemingly no reason but to maintain the post-apocalyptic setting. Like, the first time California was nuked into oblivion also happened offscreen, but it had some weight to it.

I think people are too hung up on the chalkboard and book dates, which could have just been a dumb lore mistake since moving it forwards wouldn't impact much in the grand scheme of things. I'm more disappointed with how the NCR itself was neutered by Vault-Tec coming out of nowhere, pushing the noooook button, and Shady Sands getting blown up without a fight. A balkanized NCR falling due to its own faults would have been way more interesting than secret unpredictable nuke BS. Plus whatever the frick happened to Vegas itself that left it in ruin, undermining whatever choices the NV players made for their characters or possibly forcing a canon ending.
Shit, these writers are making me sympathize with Ulysses. It kinda sucks when something you've built up gets wiped out out of nowhere.

Vegas would be in trouble if the NCR came apart, to be fair. House's entire plan is basically to financially leech on the growing society. He needs communities developed and large enough to have recreational travel and disposable income or he's got nothing to work with.
I'd much rather actually see how shit went wrong, though. Off-screening this shit so we can get back to fricking spiders in scrap huts and whacking off to the BoS is lazy.

To be fair to the wonky TV show timeline, Obsidian wanted FONV to be set 10-20 years prior than it was, but at the time Bethesda was "no prequels" (despite the fact nothing in FONV could've affected FO3/4 continuity regarding those stories). So it made FONV a bit weak in it's timeline; it would've been better set in the late 2250s or early 2260s, been more reasonable the NCR was so pathetic and disorganized having a weak ass eastern frontier so close to Hub; the only thing that would've needed to change in FONV to fit this timeline is make Cass and Arcade a bit younger and it all still works the same.

I remain convinced that the main reason they went so hard on Rogue One was because of how much shit they got for getting caught up in the nostalgia-bait with TFA.

It also appears that the muzzle flash is coming out between the 6 and 7 o'clock, so it's firing from the bottom barrel.

Is there any particular advantage or disadvantage to using a certain position to be the firing barrel in a rotary system? Beyond the obvious of what lines up best with your chosen feed mechanism, I suppose.

The show was surprisingly bad. The actors were all fine. I actually really like Walton Goggins in most things and I'd joyfully bend over Ella Purnel any day of the week. The plot and story telling however, were not there. The entire show just rambled through various placements of stuff from the games, like putting a deathclaw skull on the ground or having them be at a red rocket gas station. The rest of it was gratuitous violence and just jumping around from story fragment to story fragment sprinkled with typical hollywood bullshit making sure to have enough gay couples and an evil white male authority figure.

Real Fallouts (1, 2, New Vegas) have a connecting central thread. Even bad ones (3, 4) have some conceit to a boring central thread. Nothing wrong with episodic storytelling if the episodes are good.

Without even getting too political or questioning whether there is a message being conveyed, these large productions have a tendency to attract vultures, parasites and talentless hacks to their side who often try to cater to the lowest common denominator, which makes everything feels like shit because it's made for shit people who didn't care for the IP in the first place. But hey, big corpo's demand it be done this way because make shit accessible for morons is everything in their money first worldview.

There's also the fact that I think people kind of get the cart before the horse on what actually matters when it comes to projects and the people who make them. Particularly with long-running franchises, just hiring 'the fans' or people trying to cater directly to them can result in things going wrong too.
One example I'd point to is that my favourite parts of post-Lucas Star Wars, Rogue One and Andor, were both headed by creatives that liked the series fine, but weren't so in love with it that they tried to make the perfect fan's film or show. They had a little distance and did something a little different as a result and love them or hate them, at least produced something more creatively distinct.
For a more on-topic example, Fallout 3. It was clearly meant to be a love-letter to all the bits of Fallout that Bethesda's leads loved. All your favourite stuff, factions, iconography and enemies in a new wasteland setting, with a mish-mash of the first two games' story. Problem is it was a love letter written in blood and jizz by people who didn't fully understand the property they were working with. You can't convince me there wasn't a genuine appreciation for the IP there, it just wasn't enough.
You're correct otherwise, mind you. I just think 'made by people that love it', while good, is sometimes treated with a little too much weight.

Every country had nukes and tensions were high between many countries on account of the resource shortages.

Also it was aliens. There's a hidden tape in the UFO DLC where the aliens get the launch codes from an abducted US general.

Even the DIA computers in Fallout 4 talk about China moving nuclear subs right off the coast of California and launching bombers towards the US on the 22nd right before everything kicked off

No he didn't. Besides, the games are what the canon is. Fallout 3 said it was aliens in a very deniable way. Otherwise it's inconclusive. The situation points to China being more likely to do it, but nuclear weapons are so widespread at the time that some loser country could have started Armageddon.

I like the cope of "erhm that could just mean that was the start of the fall" despite the image being a nuke and it indeed getting nuked by the girls father at the same time FO3 took place.

        Anonymous

There is an arrow moving toward the mushroom cloud, suggesting a time gap between the fall and the nuke. Plus there were many indications of the NCR coming apart at the seams already in FONV.

It's sloppy writing, but not impossible to salvage. We'll just have to see what they do with season 2.

I think a splintered NCR would be much more interesting than just 'lmao they all got nuked' or some shit. Have some loyalists to the idea of a representative democracy in the wasteland, have some brahmin barrons trying to hang onto their influence while their caps hold out, I dunno. There's stuff you could do with it that's more interesting.

Exactly, an entire nation doesn't simply to exist. Anything else would've been better than simply reusing the botherhood of steel and enclave.

Realistically, Bethesda just doesn't have an interest in telling stories about states or any kind of civil reconstruction beyond single isolated towns.
The only organisations allowed to continue to exist are militaristic guys in cool outfits.

NCR splintering is definitely more realistic than it falling apart, but it'd be a very heavy splintering. FNV already posts a pretty grim future for NCR no matter what happens. Shady Sands being gone means they'd lose their grip on most of their colonial territories, lose their beuracracy, their most important city, their political hub, etc., etc., not to mention the many many groups that hate the NCR for one reason or another jumping on the bandwagon to kick them while they're down - even excluding an explosion in raider attacks.

                Anonymous

Yeah, my issue is less with something bad happening to the NCR and more with the idea of such a core faction to the east coast games getting handwaved away to make room for the same, warmed over, west coast versions of older east coast factions.
I don't want Fallout to just become the story of two guys in power armour getting in a punch up every five years.

                Anonymous

Eh it was pretty good in my opinion. I agree with how a splintered NCR would be interesting not just remnants at the Getty Museum. My one grip is that when the Goul was introduced they should have waited to show his past life until after he put that holotape in showing that old movie for the big reveal.

            Anonymous

Well we see they have an organized group in LA, so perhaps there are splinter factions yet to be seen.

Exactly, an entire nation doesn't simply to exist. Anything else would've been better than simply reusing the botherhood of steel and enclave.

Not saying you're wrong, but until they elaborate in season 2 we just don't know. Even if they DID simply frick up the dates, it can still be salvaged if they explain more in season 2.

NTA but I think it would have been more on brand if the NCR had collapsed and fractured on its own due to infighting as a result of its terrible planning and policy making. Twin Mothers is at the top headwaters of the Rio Grande; Circle Junction probably isn't Grand Junction, more like Pueblo or maybe La Junta Colorado (going by it's Van Buren location). Also that is not the location for Res; its specifically describe to be Los Alamos which would put it southeast of it's position.
That "Spillway" is nonsense as a region/province and there was no reference to that location except along the Legion side of Hoover Dam.
Also there was no NCR influence out east of Vault City; that was 80s and White Legs country (White Legs migrated from the Bonneville Salt flats where they got their name).

Also technically The Hub IS where Bartstow was, although the FO1 map it was swapped around (same with Necropolis which in text was considered Bakersfield, but on map was at where Barstow would be).
Arroyo isn't on the coast; Junktown wasn't it's own state (founding states were Shady, Hub, Boneyard, Dayglow, Maxson). Bakersfield's not a state, it was probably Maxson originally but once the BoS got defeated the state of Maxson probably because administered by Necropolis as it's location would
Freeside and Khan's camp are in the wrong positions on the NV inlay

However, the name "Sedan" was incorrectly transcribed as "Sudan" in the Congressional Record.

        >Within days of the error, the international community took notice. Sudanese officials responded by stating that "the Sudanese government takes this issue seriously and with extreme importance". The Chinese Xinhua General News Service published an article claiming that the Sudanese government blamed the U.S. for raising cancer rates among the Sudanese people.[26] Despite the U.S. embassy in Khartoum issuing a statement clarifying that it was a typographic error, Mustafa Osman Ismail, the Sudanese Foreign Minister, stated his government would continue investigating the claims.[27]

Fallout 76 had a plotline about how the overseer of Vault 76 was secretly tasked with securing the nearby nuclear silos in the name of Vault-Tec. Maybe that wasn't a unique case, and other vaults may have had the same orders.

    >the NCR
The NCR is the most milquetoast and boring faction in the game, and any further storytelling in the series benefits them being reduced to a minor player.
    >New Vegas
It's heavily implied that New Vegas will be a part of the next season, and House is introduced in Pre-War Flashbacks
    >Rebuilding
The most iconic line from the games is "War Never Changes." A rebuilt society being wiped out in a war is on brand.

Todd purged homosex from fallout and Elder scrolls, and is a big fan of old school fantasy dare.

      >milquetoast
No, it allows flexibility and comedy. NCR absorbs tribals and criminals under the same roof of "democracy" and "debate." If you can't write fat cats or big wig demagogues and firebrands, that means you suck.
NCR can have weird and flip flopping interpretations of what The Republic was and how it worked. Its symbols, rituals, and uniforms.
None of the factions seem to have any inherent advantage or disadvantage in terms of storytelling. Anything can be boring, too. If you suck.

I've been a fallout fan for 18 years, I love fallouts 1, 2 and New Vegas, I'm lukewarm on 3, and I despise fallout 4 and consider it worthless garbage.

The show is better than I thought. I'm on episode 3 right now. There's a lot of autistic nitpicks that I can make, like there not ever being chickens in Fallout or the Bethesda BOS being moronic 40k Space Marines instead of isolationists, but at the core, its decent and I'm willing to set those things aside because the requirements for a good show are different from a good fallout game. I think of it as a spin-off instead of a core installment. Viewed in that way, it's not amazing, but it's pretty good.

    The good:
    >Solid acting all around, especially the BOS guy
    >Explicit sexual content and violence, like fallout should have
    >Morally gray characters and tough choices
    >Main character isn't a Mary Sue and is naive to the point of being moronic at first
    >Occasionally you get little references to the first two games, for example the design of the 10mm pistols and sentry turrets are exactly as they appear in fallout 1 and 2
    >There's a dog.

    The bad:
    >Some of the dialog is pretty clunky
    >Certain scene transitions are badly done
    >The brotherhood are basically moronic space Marines like in fallout 4
    >Power armor shouldn't fly and looks absolutely moronic when doing so with wrist rockets ala Iron Man
    >The main plot is about finding your dad similar to fallout 3
    >A lot of the scenes with Wastelanders fall into the overdone "wacky wasteland theme park" trope that Bethesda is so fond of instead of actual world building

Most of the shitty parts are the Bethesda fallouts leaking in, but at the very least they're trying incorporate a decent balance of content, like having it set on the West Coast. I was fearing that it would basically be "Fallout 4 the show" and it's not. It's decent but I'm still holding my breath for it to get drastically better or worse as I finish the other episodes.

Standardised service rifles and ammunition confirm that. These are things that only became possible with industry - prior to industrialisation there was substantial variation in the output of things like national arsenals.

To be fair we don't know if they're at the point of say, widespread parts interchangeability on fully new-production equipment. Tolerances close enough for any part to fit into any other example of a mass production piece of equipment hasn't always been the case. I'd assume they are considering that they aren't starting from scratch in knowledge and probably have access to at least some salvaged pre-war manufacturing to help bootstrap industry, but all the same.
The Brotherhood may be able to produce new small arms for instance, but from what we know of how they structure themselves I'd suspect it's more artisan. Every laser rifle might shoot the same and handle the same but if you open them up there's probably going to be more variability. Same for pre-war hardware they refurbish.

I’ll add to the other anon that the ability to make new service rifles with standardized parts isn’t hugely impressive because the AR15 is an extremely simple weapon and the only demanding piece to building them is the receiver forgings, there’s a reason there’s 1000000 different AR makers in the US. Anybody can restart a production line for them with a salvaged forge and some lathes, the real kicker for rebuilding industry in the NCR is ammo production.
                >YFW the assault carbine in NV is either using 200 year old plastic handguards or the NCR is making petroleum based products

The one thing that I absolutely fricking despise about Fallout is how it's like a big "apocalypse theme park". It's one thing to see the ruins of the old world. It's another entirely for it to look like nobody has built anything new since the bombs dropped. Everything looks like fricking ramshackle shacks that were scrapped together mere hours after the bombs dropped. Everyone walking around in ancient ratty clothes instead of any new textiles being woven. How nobody knows how to use a broom anymore. Transistors were not invented in Fallout until FO4 retconned it by saying that transistors were invented a second before the nukes fell. At this point it seems like there were a million things that would have fixed the situation if only the nukes were delayed a year. There would have been fusion energy, transistors, unlimited genetically engineered food, etc.

                >The Fall could be referring to the various troubles in the central NCR mentioned in New Vegas
Be nice if the show actually said that instead of just putting up a date that makes no sense. Maybe Todd wouldn't have had to come out and damage control while you cope about how its not just bad writing.

That thing spent, like, 15 seconds firing hundreds of rounds at a guy and his dog at close range, but still couldn't hit them. That targeting system was a million times worse than any Imperial stormtrooper. Insanely moronic.

It's in line with the games, to be honest. You can argue that it's been 200 years since the turret was calibrated, as well.

    >retconns China starting the nuke drop
    >blames the entire war on vault tech
    >gives them the shadow government in place of the enclave
    >completely destroys the significance of fallout 1 2 and vegas
