From a military and weapons perspective would Putin have been better off ignoring Ukraine and taking Georgia instead?

From a military and weapons perspective would Putin have been better off ignoring Ukraine and taking Georgia instead? Or was the fear Ukraine would be even more reinforced with Western equipment in a future date? Georgia is sliding closer and closer to Russia as we speak so it seems a more logical target.

Could Russia go for it now?

Even today, Russia could absolutely take over Georgia if they are left to fight by themselves. In case of another Russian invasion, their only chance is to get other countries to intervene

I just don't see the point of labelling them a Foreign Agent.
I get asking media companies to publicly announce where they get their funding from, so you can work out what their most likely bias is going to be in their stories, but labelling them as basically spies and fifth columnists because foreigners help fund them is just stupid, as it automatically assumes that anyone who isn't in the current government's pocket is an enemy of the state.
The only possible excuse I could see could be as a dog whistle to the Russians to say "Hey there fellow authoritarians, look at how oppressive and Neo-Soviet we are. Certainly no Westernisation going on here, don't you worry. Have no fear, we're still in your orbit and will be for the foreseeable future."

        >It'S the ultra-cope, attempting to get a victory in Georgia to downplay the utter failure in Ukraine.
This, which frankly makes it more likely unfortunately for Georgians. Lots of people this past year have been saying how Tsar Monke might ape out further and use nukes if losing in Ukraine. But while sure he seems to have gone to total shit mentally, the risks of nukes are still stupid, obviously high.

In comparison to nukes, launching a new war against Georgia is practically risk-free to putin. He doesn't care about lives lost. Unlike Ukraine, Georgia is far more isolated from the West. Turkey has a chunk of border but Turkey is hot/cold on Russia, is a basketcase itself right now, and is unlikely to offer anything like the kind of support through its borders as Poland and all the rest. Russia has already secured a big path through the mountains with its little green men breakaway region. It has "allies" sharing border as well. Georgia is tiny vs Ukraine. And the Georgia Dream leading party in power is pro-Russia and made by a billionaire who is a potential easy corruption target.

So as far as desperation cope moves go, it sucks but Georgia looks like a relatively softer fallback target. Their big saving grace is Russia has expended so much in Ukraine already, and fresh off a Ukrainian victory NATO would probably be a lot more inclined to try to feed Georgia insurgency weapons at least. Still a bad position to be in though.

          Anonymous

I think you’re reading the room wrong on Turkey.
They want to ensure the Caucasus stay as a buffer.
If Russia takes Georgia, that would immediately put Russian forces near their border. If Russia was to make moves on Armenia too, it would threaten their friendship with Azerbaijan.
Iran has a similar stake as well, they might be willing to support Russia in Ukraine but if they make moves in the Caucasus they’ll get upset.
The region has been fought over for centuries between the three powers and the post soviet status quo was beneficial for Iran and Turkey.

Kazakhstan is just in a really shit position no matter how you slice it. It's a successful nation compared to all the others around it, but bordered by both Russia and China who want to keep it firmly within their orbit. The other -stans are busy fighting each other to form some kind of mutual alliance, made even worse now that Afghanistan might be looking to pick fights now that the Americans have packed up. Russia is a sinking ship that could absolutely lash out in anger if you play your cards wrong, while China is putting your kin in camps right over the border. Trying to ally with the West makes sense from a certain standpoint—they're the ones least likely to try and ethnically cleanse you—but they're far away and you have no ocean access either.

Well we at least know you're not British or American because you're clearly a brown ESL. You do realise Georgia has an active military of 37,000, right? For reference, Wagner lost 50,000 attacking Bakhmut. That's their total professional force. They then have 100,000 'territorial reservists' which are not going to be trained or well equipped. They have a total of 66 aircraft (only 36 are in a state of readiness to actually be used). 38 helicopters (only 21 ready). 234 tanks (134 ready). 103 SPG (57 ready). 173 towed artillery (95 ready). 165 MLRS (91 ready).

Yeah man Russia would be absolutely destroyed. Even as they are Russia could fricking steamroll Georgia without outside help.

I remember very clearly Russia invading an annexing Georgia some years ago, a while before Crimea.
Specifically, they cut off the power grid and internet of that country putting them in a media blackout before rolling in and reclaiming the territory.

What the actual frick? I remember this clear as day.

They've continued to do it too.

You're right about the invasion, but they didn't annex all of Georgia, just two meme separatist republics (sound familiar?): South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

        Anonymous

Pretty standard strategy of Russia for the last few decades. Invade a country and create pseudo republics that will put country in perpetual conflict and deny it any chance or security and join NATO. Then keep planning and preparing for proper annexation.

I don't think they're going for a full annexation. They didn't in 2008 and didn't even try during the intervening time between that and Ukraine. Seems pretty clear they really did just want a buffer and to keep them out of nato

Before they get to Georgia, they'll be invading New York. It's just a couple of miles south-west of Bakhmut.

Because it is legit, пидopaшкa. I know Russian and live in the Baltics. Up until we had ruski mir television banned we had talkshows on every mainstream Russian channel barking that exact shit. Some was subtle, some was them screaming to throw nukes at Washington. But we had it for DECADES.
Soloveiv, that other b***h and their friends are now, for a full year mouthspamming about expanding the "Empire", flinging nukes in random directions and assuring their population of vatnik morons that they have China and India in the bag like loyal slaves.
