The French navy's Rubis class SSNs are only one-third the displacement of US and British subs at 2,400 tons. What is the reason for this? How do they compare to Virginia and Astute class?
Please, no anti-French shitposting.
Oh alright, if you must.
My guess is far less weapons, and they may be designed more for anti-surface or anti sub warfare. US and British subs also have weapons for attacking land targets.
They have the SCALP cruise missile for land attack.
They are smaller than Tomahawks I here but I forgot about those.
They just look tiny for SSNs. Most conventional subs are bigger and probably more capable.
imagine the smell
This. Imagine being trapped in small tin can with a bunch of frenchmen.
(USN) Submariner here, I had the privilege of touring AMETHYSTE last year that pulled before the French/ Aus submarine deal drama.
They are super duper compact, like for example you have to shimmy around the sail to get to the bow holding onto a rail. They had two auxiliary machinery rooms one of which was more for basic utilities (i.e waste water/ refrigeration and the other was life support co2 scrubbers etc at least from what I could tell).
Control room was also tight too but also cool and had a high ceiling, the officer would actually sit in a chair that was raised above the deck in front of the periscope which was in a plexiglass tube to which I assume is just a sump to drain the water out that space. Overall giving it a kinda of startrek feel to it.
Sonar was weird and stations were slightly different, I can't talk about that so much and I'm pretty sure the frog giving me the tour wasn't supposed to show me but w/e. The system seem intuitive, Im sure I could figure it out if I had time to play around with it/. the keyboard were cool and you could fold in the controls when you didn't need it.
Crews mess was super chill and pretty open with comfy seats that could be converted into couches for just lounging, hell they even had beer/wine unlike our amerifart navy and certainly far better cooks.
All submarine smell like cat piss, its the CO2 scrubbers.
>The system seem intuitive, Im sure I could figure it out if I had time to play around with it
Jive Turkey seemed quite appreciative of the SUBTICS architecture.
>blames it on the air scrubbers
Only a poor workhon blames his tools.
If you even get the chance to go inside a working submarine you the first thing you will notice is the musty ammonia like smell from the CO2 scrubbers.
Fricking moron
>What is the reason for this?
cheaper
>How do they compare to Virginia and Astute class?
less weapons, about as stealthy, slightly less endurance
They're shite, simple as
A "coastal defense nuclear submarine" is an oxymoron. French submarine force was developed as homeland territorial defense since they lacked British internationalist naval pretensions or the US naval requirement. But the nuclear industry needed support (buyers) for its nuclear propulsion reactor complex. So an abomination was born.
My my what a moronic statement with no basis in reality.
I'd say you're looking at the French submarine program with completely the wrong lens, instead of a 'what justification is there for nuclear subs?' It should be 'what justification is there to NOT have nuclear subs?' for the French. They have the nuclear industry base, technical ability, and international desire enough to justify it.
> you just proved his point
>Rubis
moar liek Jubis amirite? amirite? iamrite.
>SSN
There's your answer.
>How do they compare to Virginia and Astute class
Rubis is an 80s build 70s design, you should compare it to its contemporaries like the Trafalgar and LA class. Its like trying to compare a Mirage 2000 with an F35....Or compare Barracuda with Virginia and Astute, makes a bit more sense.
French naval reactors have always been poor - the dictate a small size and regular refueling.
I wonder how much of an impact this space-saving miniaturization design has on stealthiness.
Probably not all that much
