This entire part of france is empty, so pretty good

Why? Is it because of the "red sea"of shells and mortars from the WW1?

It's because there are hills and no historically important cities nor mines/industry there outside of Toulouse which isn't very big

          >no historically important cities nor mines/industry there
A blatant lie by your own trash map.

          Here's a better one.
The bluer, the better for PrepHole purposes

The reason why I made this thread is that there's a 90% chance I will wind up living there long term, possibly for life. I've noticed there's loads of cheapish property out in the middle and some boonies, so I am wondering.

The French are obnoxious. French PrepHoleists are equally obnoxious. Either that or some flavour of hippie. In the Alps especially they have this annoying mentality of trying to police where people go and hike. Case in point: Mont Blanc.

I quite like the French character. From what I saw IRL you're mostly free to do whatever you want as long as you're not stupid. That's something Romance speakers don't tolerate at all, even if you only *appear* stupid. This makes for a lot of trouble with autists because by default they appear like idiots when they are not.

I’ve only ever encountered one Frenchie that I’m aware of and I’ll agree that dude was cool. He is the most French guy I’ve ever seen too. Plays the French horn, loves to bake pastries, likes climbing up mountains, smells a little, talks like a gay. Cool guy.

Very good description, the guy I was talking about was one a PhD and had taught at some fairly prestigious universities

Indeed, it's the contrast between competence at one thing and utterly childish behaviour at another that makes me so confused. That said I like France, so it's either that or Italy where I settle

As a Frenchie, could you give some example ? This is something I would never have considered about my people.

I worked at several hostels for nearly 2 years total. Granted it was mostly people aged 18-28, so a lot of youthful mistakes are expected, but you definitely notice a few patterns over time. Especially when your colleagues are from all over. Nothing too specific, just general attitudes. I'm bit too tired (haven't slept for more than a day) to give you a coherent reply rn, but I will try putting out some anecdotes and observations in within these next couple of days.

Boomers french are, but covid almost got them all out. New generations of french are not different from their neighbors, but the stigma will stay for a while I guess.

The massif centrale is actually pretty comfy. Some large wild forests around. Alps are great mountains but too busy and the managed areas are a pain. Don't get anywhere near mont blanc or th tour operators will assault you..
The Pyrénées are less busy but not as fun mountains until you get mauled by the bear. Tbh when I want more serious PrepHole I drive further into Spain or out to Slovenia.

Land is quite cheap out in some parts there because there isn't much agriculture or anything really; is it worth dumping 50k on a plot of land?

You'll have shit services and pay through the nose for internet but yeah. I had to move out to the Massif for the gf and was able to buy a decent house with more than enough land for the dog and a hobby farm. Cost me a quarter of what my shitty flat in Lyon was worth.

Yes, I got harassed by the gendarmerie when I went up to the foot of the Couloir du Goûter, and those Black folk tried to guilt trip me to the max about how I was going to die and how I was ruining the Mont Blanc for everyone.
Long story short, I came back one week later and climbed the mountain as I had planned, after they officially "reopened" the mountain.

Police are scum mostly everywhere, especially small town, local cops. I've never had issue with road police, but municipal cops can be massive buttholes.

Although it seems like they might have a good reason to dissuade people as there's been quite a few accidents.

        >From 1990 to 2011, the French mountain police force registers show 291 rescue operations in the Goûter couloir, which resulted in 74 deaths and 180 injuries[13] and from 1990 to 2017 347 rescue operations here, related to accidents which resulted in 102 deaths and 230 injuries.

You'd probably get sick of dealing with some idiot dying every year too t b h.

Hiking is a huge national pastime. Has some of the world's greatest rock climbing and skiing, and also good alpinism. Even the non-world class are still hella good. Fishing is alright I suppose. Laws around backpacking with a tent or walking on other people's land aren't as liberal as Scandinavia, but the French also have this thing where bending the rules is tolerated. Road biking is very big too. A lot of French are surprisingly sporty.

      How's your knowledge of French?

Not that anon but french isn't hard to learn to speak. Just a chore to write and learn to speak well. Even news presenters talk absolute crap sometimes but that could just be parisian french.
I've been working in France 5 years now and don't get outed as a bong anymore but don't quite sound like I'm from the local area.

It's "too dumb even for business school so I did journalism" French.
Sad to know even a foreigner has noticed the poor language quality in media ; it makes my mother seethe.

Ascend to greatness, OP. The water sports, hiking, day life and PrepHole in southern france is bar none the best in the world. Picrel was my bike ride scenery last July.

Can't wait to move there. What would you say is the best PrepHole city? I'm not sure where I will wind up. Tempted to say Paris (despite all the shit talk about it I appreciate all the museums and art it has as I'm an artgay), although I was looking at Bordeaux and Toulouse.

        Anonymous

paris is so depressing. you have to pay expensive rent to be in a livable neighborhood. If you enjoy art go live there for a year, there's so much to be seen. but move as soon as you can cause it takes a toll on you.
it's also the least PrepHole place in france. I live half an hour away from paris, in the only forested area near the capital (yvelines). thats where all the billionaires live so it's 1. crazy expensive 2. mostly private land. I have friends who own property so I get to enjoy the outdoors unlike most and i'm thankful for that.
Bordeaux and Toulouse are good picks tbh. Pick the former if you like the ocean. I'm alpine so I'm biased but imo the alps beat everything in france.

I'd say Bordeaux is a bad idea for PrepHole. Move more into the lands, Clermont-Ferrand, Toulouse and up

    I'm French.

Basically laws, rules and regulations are a b***h, but if you avoir getting caught you'll mostly never get in trouble, the paperwork is just not worth it for the local gendarmerie to bother.
Had a small permanent meeting site with friends in a very small wood in Normandy near Évreux, we made large fires that were visible from the road and from nearby houses and never were bothered by the gendarmerie.
Basically don't be a dick to the locals and everything will be fine. There is a particularly high disdain for the city folk who we call the bourgeois, and the main reason we hate them is because they act like they own the place. Don't do that. Integrate. Offer some alcohol to the local peasant that could bother you and you'll have made a friend. Learn the language, act like you care and want to try hard and you will be liked, you don't even have to try hard, just act like it.
