Foot wound advice plz

So to put a long story short I wore my newish hiking boots that I wore once or twice before to a 6 mile hike that took 2.5 hrs and had a lot of ups and downs.

I left pretty late to start the hike, so it was starting to get dark and I was completely alone and in a huge hurry to get back. My right foot was dying but I didn’t want to waste time to stop and put a bandaid on (also was scared I’d get eaten by a bear).

Anyway I got home and it’s not just a blister, it’s a straight up wound so the skin has peeled off and has exposed pink skin underneath and it hurts.

Can I put moleskin on it or what do I do now? I really wanna go hiking again tmrw (1 week later)

Moleskin is really to be used before the blister starts. If you have to put shoes on put a decent bandage or 2 on it but it will heal the fastest if you can leave it open to the air...

True, but that said, if he has a sheet, he can probably cut something to go around the affected area. Probably even double stack it if needed.

Soak your foot in hot water with epsom salts or decent quality soap water for 10 or 15 minutes before bed for about 3 or 4 nights.

Also use NewSkin and reapply it as often as you can. One day you’ll have good skin on your feet but for now you’re a pussy

You're a pussy now but your feet will toughen up over time and you won't get blisters. + your boots will break in better. My advice would be to forget about hiking tomorrow.

In the UK, we use Compeed plasters on blisters, theyre really good, don't know if they have something similar where you are.

If the problem persists, learn how to bind your feet with zinc oxide tape, it's a skill for sure but will be amazing once mastered

Also heavily talc your feet before you start, it helps prevent foot rot etc and reduces rub between your foot and the boot.

One of my friends swears by wearing two pairs of socks, but I have never tried

But the problem is I have to wear socks and if I don’t put a bandaid it will stick to my sock cause it’s still oozing even though it’s been a week

Moleskin sucks, just use ductape (ideally before it gets that bad. I would treat it like any other wound at this point, swab with alcohol, apply antibiotic, dress with gauze. But yeah for blister prevention you just slap a piece of tape right on the skin when a hotspot starts to form and that will completely eliminate the friction. Moleskin will just fall off and generally be a huge pain in the ass.

Okay that’s a very good tip thank you. I feel like it still hurts with a bandaid, does this mean I have to buy gauze and medical tape as well?

I've used toilet paper in a pinch before when I had no gauze. Medical tape is nice because it breathes. I don't think you HAVE to do anything anon, if you're gonna hike on it though I would dress it up and then ductape over your whole heel (ductape is glossy and prevents friction, but is not breathable so you want to take it off and let it air out). For just being around the house/work, bandaid should be fine. I personally hate bandaids though and always make my own with tape and gauze

      This is the correct answer.

If OP wants to go over the top, he can cut a donut of moleskin to fit around the affected area. Then dress the entire thing (wound and moleskin donut) with a simple gauze pad, then tape over the gauze.

The moleskin provides cushioning, the gauze keeps the wound clean, and the tape holds it all together. Leukotape holds better than duct tape, but everyone already has duct tape. This method is a pain in the ass because cutting a new donut of moleskin to change the gauze pad is a pain, but it’s the most comfortable. I’ve used little strips of moleskin to form a square around blisters and it works well. I’ve also just slapped tape over a popped blister and it wasn’t that bad.

The last time I treated a blister I just used gauze and leukotape. The moleskin donut (which is how it’s recommended to be used for blister treatment) isn’t really worth it. But some people are more sensitive.

Tbh moleskin is expensive here so I think I will.. just create a duct tape donut? Or maybe put bandaids around the wound, and then put gauze on top?

It seems pretty sore though, I rubbed a lot of skin away

don't make any kind of donut either lol. the purpose of the tape is to go over top so that the smooth surface of tape will slide against your sock instead of rubbing on the wound. You should clean with alcohol, apply antibiotic ointment, place your dressing (gauze, TP, bandaid, whatever), then tape the shit out of it. If you use ductape, make sure to remove when you stop hiking so it can air out. boom that's it

use this sport tape on the wound, then two layers of socks. one snug and one lose, the lose one on top

Now that I think of it putting tape on the wound sounds like a completely awful idea

Thinking of taking it off makes me shudder

don't put tape directly on the wound. put tape over the dressing. you put tape on directly if it is just a hot spot or less severe blister without broken skin

Okay. That’s what i thought but he was saying to put it on and I got scared.

I don’t have antibiotic ointment and gauze is really expensive, but toilet paper sticks onto it so I’m not sure. Maybe I should shell out for gauze at least. But I have very fragile medical tape, so maybe I will just use duct tape instead.

That kind of tape breaths so it works in a pinch, and yes it gonna hurt when you pull it of but when its on its like extra skin. make sure to cut away any dead skin first tho.
A band aid or dressing can rubb against the blister thats why i just tape directly on the blister
but try dubbel socks i hiked 350 km this summer without any blisters

Okay but it’s not a blister.

It’s my only enjoyment I have to go tomorrow. It’s a long story but I got $80 hiking boots from decathlon and I feel like if I got better ones this wouldn’t have happened.

I have toe socks which I want to try. I noticed I got some rubbing between the toes too which never happened before so I will start wearing them.

first shower or clean the area with iodine pad or alcohol, and or bacitracin. double the moleskin over, cout out a hole a bit bigger than the blister.
apply the moleskin so non of the sticky part is touching the blister, cut out the hole more initially, and size it so it is just bigger than the blister. then apply medical tape around and over the moleskin, tape around the moleskin but no covering the blister. if you got a blister that you need popped do it with a lighter heated needle. from the bottom so it drains. then do the moleskin procedure. carry lots of fresh wool socks.

Hoka trail runners fricked me over good. Same position as you, OP.

Spoke to a pharmacist who recommended second skin. It's helping, and showers are no longer torture.

apparently the ooze that's trapped underneath second skin helps it heal faster.. according to the pharmacist anyway.

Frick it’s over. How long has it been for you? Lmao twinsies

I got some second skin but it fricking peeled off and bled through it? Idk I’m so confused

Maybe it’s cause I went hiking today but I wore very loose shoes (Uggs in the snow lmao) and I put gauze and a frickload of tape on top so it didn’t hurt at all

Go hiking immediately , Seriously , itll cause a callous and you'll never have blisters again. Be sure and dont take any gear or supplies. Extra weight will reinjure it. Wear light clothes too, preferably cotton.

You can’t form a callous over a literal wound lmao , the upper layers of skin are already gone which is how a callous is formed

3 days or so. this fricking thing ain't healing for weeks, so barefoot beach runs in the meantime.

yeah, you can't use second skin and wear shoes. it will peel off immediately. take it easy and let the blister heal.

You’re lucky it’s warm where you are at least. Bonus points if you have saltwater beaches. Honestly yours looks a bit worse than mine, esp. since mine wasn’t insanely painful in the shower as well.
