Folding Entrenching Shovels?

What shovels do you guys use when out camping? Do you guys carry fixed shovels or are folding shovels good enough for the job? For me personally, it's the Chinese WJQ-308 Military shovel. It has like 15 functions in one. Shovel, pick axe, chopping, saw, wire cutting, wire twister, can opener. What do you guys carry?

i dig with a trekking pole and get my trekking poles in aluminum instead of carbon so when they deform from said digging i just bend it back no problem. it serves as a middle ground between a shitty backpacker trowel and a gigantic cobra commando e tool.

I have carried a shovel a few times, but i dont find it worth the weight. I have a surplus ak74 bayonett, that i use for camp tasks, that digs easy enough and is very light. Cost me 8€

I have a Fiskars folder I got recently and didn't take PrepHole yet, it's a solid piece once unfolded, packs compact, but it's heavy as shit. If it doesn't prove itself immensely useful those times I'll take it with me I'll probably use it for gardening.

It is good for entrenching and possibly bashing someones head in, but unless you need to construct fighting positions, I'd opt for something else.

      >in titanium due to the weight savings

A wooden handle can be replaced with a longer handle or repurposed. Hauling around a titanium tube that's riveted to your shovel and the sole purpose is to add leverage to your shovel is fricking moronic.

I figured everyone understood that I was talking about the shovel head being titanium. I don't think any place even sells 100% titanium shovels (the handle being titanium as well).

Snufkin is a sissy that runs to the south before the cold season starts.

Ah crap I'm going to ask: is it hard to move to Scandinavia as a EU citizen job and housing wise? Online job ads seem to be for specialized positions, I'm not sure what the job market is like outside of that. I know that in Finland they expect you to know the language at native level to do pretty much anything. I've been wanting to move for years.

If you have a good degree, then you can work in english. People in Finland generally know English sonwell that foreigners do not even have to learn Finnish for surviving.
I knew one British guy who lived here for 7 years and he didn't learn more than few phrases in Finnish. Being motovated to learn the language does help.

The description for the milsurp shovels are some of the best I've seen on the shop so far
    >A magnificent piece of war history but absolutely shitty for digging for anything but holes in your psyche.
    >If your philosophy of life is all about modern efficiency, this e-tool is as useful for you as a bikini on a hippo. The shaft is short as hell, ergonomics infernally crappy, and the flat edge can only easily dig holes in your soul. But traditional bushcrafters and reenactors don’t care about modern decadence. Their joy stems from overcoming difficulties. And it is quite hard to get more difficult than this.
    >A smart person would have put a handle on the shaft but these have a dildoesque lump instead.
    >There are two kinds of people, my friend. Those with Austro-Hungarian Field Spades and those who don't dig. You won't dig much more with this.
    >Oh Lord have mercy on the one that diggeth anything with this ye olde tool.
    >These are pretty old, and used with the love and care usually associated with vast East Bloc conscript armies.
    >A magnificent piece of history but fiendishly crappy for digging. Mount it on your wall or give it to a neighbor that you hate.

the fixed handle lightweight ones with sharp edges are pretty nice. works well enough for cutting through vines and shit when off trail. and chops branches well enough for a campfire. they get mangled by rocks though digging anything but sand and clean soil will frick its ability to cut. worthy of the name multitool unlike most things advertised as such.
the folding nato shovels are nice because you can set it 90 degrees so you can use it like a hoe but i wouldnt sharpen the edge for cutting doesnt seem like it would hold up to the impacts

I don't take one with me, but I leave a cold steel spetnaz shovel in my trunk. I got stuck in the snow once, and had to dig out my car with a stick I found nearby. It was the middle of a logging road and I was at it for hours. When I got stuck the next time it only took me 20 minutes to get unfricked with the shovel.

How long have you had it and how much did that cost? I never trust Chinease and Chineasium-based products now out of principle and expected reliability.

Had one of these () for a while and later had to replace it for another NATO design shovel after the fricker I left it with decided to use it as a fricking AXE on downed timber.
It's a good design that lends you a functional handle and very suitible shovel when fully-exteded. You can also wind down the screw haft and lower the shovel-head for more "pick-axe/hoe" like motions. I await the day I am justified in defending myself; to either bash someone's head in or attempt to use it like a buckler. Later I bought a DPM entrenching tool pouch for it as a nice cover that lets me keep a few other things inside and a choice to wear it on my person or hide it in my bag without worrying about shit getting scratched or covered in mud.
Getting a Cold-Steel spetnaz shovel soon, so I'm interested to see the difference in weight and utility, though expect to use the NATO still because of my planned bug-out kit.

I must say after having tried it out i really like having a sharpened Shovel with me. Its great for preparing the campsite or digging fireholes or taking a shit. Other people might carry axes or folding saws, but the shovel is lighter than an axe and i really dont need to prep wood with an axe, there is enough dead dry small wood in the forests around me, so that just breaking it is more than enough. Is it unneccisary weight? maybe. is it fun to carry around a ww1 combat shovel, larping as a stormtrooper? certainly.

So I am assuming you are just stealth camping and thus the camo tarp? I hate how cucked we are legally in germany and the trekking camping places are a step in the right direction, but far from perfect nor are there enough. Ever had any issue with that? I only stealth camped at fishing spots so far, but have to grow some balls and do normal wild camping more often.

          Anonymous

there are only two types of camping in germany, cucked at a campground or free stealth camping. i choose the second option. tbh it makes it all much more interesting, evading your adversaries, keeping a low profile, trying not to be discovered. A few times so far i have planted my face in the dirt, because the forestor came around the corner, and it still has been an enjoyable ex

            >there are only two types of camping in germany
I'd argue that the trekking campsites are a third category. Still kinda cucked (you have to make reservations, pay, may have to share the campsite etc.) but far less than an actual campground (Which I like far less).
I get the thrill of stealthcamping, but for frick's sake I just want to camp PrepHole without having to camp on a cucked lawn, next to a mobile home or dauercamper, while listening to the music from the nearby camper and also have to pay for the privilege. It's super moronic.

not that anon but do camo tarps/tents actually work for stealth camping? what I mean is, how effective is the camo compared to an olive green or similar

              Anonymous

when you out your stuff somewhere, where someone else can gat line of sight on it, you are doig it wrong. Any dark colour should be fine, i even use a tent, thats neon green and it hasnt been an issue. i mostly use the camo tarp to mask the light from my firepit.

              Anonymous

Camo doesn't work in a civilian setting. The entire purpose of camo is to avoid drawing attention to yourself, but in a civilian setting camo wearers and tents/tarps actually attracts attention from the public so it does the opposite of what it was designed for.

There might be some exceptions to this though like in parts of southern USA where every other person seems to be walking around wearing camo in regular life. But generally I would go with olive green or coyote brown or whatever instead, depending on where you live.

                Anonymous

Wait, I am talking specifically about stealth camping innawoods. Of course I imagine that rocking a camo tent in a camping area is going to draw attention.

                [...]

                >Avoid tarps where the pattern repeats a lot
the tarp would be a DD, the pattern seems to be pretty good
                >For real effectiveness, you'd want full camouflage kit, painted skin
It should be all right. I'm aiming at avoiding "hey there's a tent in the middle of those trees over there" from casual passerbys or the landowner.

                [...]

                >I agree with your point, but one could theoretically pack a full camo kit in a subtle grey-man(tm) pack, and camo up once past all the normies.
That's practically what I'm doing. The camo stuff I have is only what I'm going to pitch to make camp. Otherwise I'm (mostly) using earth colors and black for clothes/pack. I have a few orange or red things but they're either inside the pack or they're going to be worn while I'm walking around. I only care about hiding my camp since free camping is (technically) forbidden.

If you buy a milsurp shovel, you should get one with a horizontal handle, like this one
the reason is: these things have gone through trench warfare. If the thing has a straight handle, there's a chance it's gone up someone's ass at some point in time. I don't have a statistic but the chances are definitely above zero. Think about it.

However some trees do not like to be transplanted, some people say only to transplant in the spring when there are no leaves on the tree, this has worked for me however i find if you do not disturb the roots too much they will be ok even in summer- as long as they get enough water. water the hole first. then give more water on top. approx 750ml per sapling. i plant small saplings, 1 to 3 years old, which i have often salvaged from locations where they would die or never thrive. (e.g. directly under another large tree, in some crack, all growing within 1 foot of each other) trees ideally need a spacing of about 8 feet/2.5 meters to thrive.
some people say seeds need to overwinter to sprout but i find many sprouting in the seed pod/fruiting body. i have grown some apple trees from seeds in this way.
Slugs and infesting insects are your biggest enemy, beer traps work wonders but must be deep. seeds can be sprouted indoors for a few weeks first to get the plant to a size that one slug cannot eat in one night.
Some locations where I thought the tree would never survive- are thriving, other locations that looked perfect - the sapling is dead. ????. Slightly larger more established saplings transplant better. The more roots you can bring with it the better. I have about an 85% survival rate. oh and I most often plant silver birch (because they will grow anywhere) and alder, which is also hardy and fast growing.

ever resharpened your shovel? i assume one just uses the same kind of sharpening stone, as for a scythe, or just whatever flat rock that can be found laying around. i have been thinking of taking one edge to the wetstone and making it sharp enough to cut tomatoes, just to see if i could.

Make sure that the plunge line is not too high of an angle. It will help you slice better but the medium carbon steel of shovels (1050s at the lower end and 1075 usually) will mean its easier to get dents in the edge with harder woods or if you end up hitting a rock in the ground.

What are the laws in Spain by the way? In Scandinavia where you're from we're basically allowed to go anywhere and camp anywhere, no matter who owns the land. How does camping work in Spain? Is it similar or is it gay like Germany where you're not even allowed to wild camp or have a camp fire?

      Anonymous

      >we're basically allowed to go anywhere and camp anywhere, no matter who owns the land.
Not Spainanon but AFAIK it's only a few central European countries that have that thing (can't remember what it's called, wanderer's right, traveller's law). I think France is one. Denmark?
Anyway do you guys in Scandinavia really have woods so widespread that if you don't live in a big city like Oslo or Helsinski you can realistically just walk off and go innawoods? It takes hours to get to a place that's remotely green and wild here because what's not been converted to crops is an ultra protected national park where the two species of birds and mammal that aren't extinct in this country still live, so you can't do anything but walk through very carefully (and then make a reservation). It's like having sex with your pants on.

Yeah I guess we can but that is even true of cities like Oslo and Helsinki. You can just go on google maps and turn on the satellite mode then you can look at Oslo for yourself. Never been to Oslo but seems like there are decent sized deep forests surrounding Oslo on pretty much all sides, but especially to the north.

Honestly I just dig with a stick.
Shovels are really heavy and I rarely if ever need to dig a deep hole or multiple holes.

For what it's worth I've found entrenching tools to be a real minefield of LARP, so many just break.

If you're in a vehicle just get a proper shovel on the roof, or cut the handle of a regular shovel down.
If you're on foot do you really need a shovel? How many fox holes do you really need to dig?
Have you ever actually dug a fox hole or do you just carry a fricking shovel because you like the idea?

Digging without a shovel is as hard as you make it, select the easiest place to dig to begin with, scrape out the soil, then use the stake and lever method to remove large pieces of earth you can simply pick up.

Thanks. I just bought a cheap leatherbalm yesterday. The pack itself seems to be pretty close to mint condition, no rust, markings, or torn leather etc. The leather was a bit dry(obviously it was built in 1941 after all) but it seems to be getting more supple, just rubbed it with balm for a second time(first time yesterday).

Although there was a small tear or whatever high up on the front of the pack near the cord which is unfortunate but maybe I am just being autistic.

          >all those dildoesque straight handles
          see

If you buy a milsurp shovel, you should get one with a horizontal handle, like this one
the reason is: these things have gone through trench warfare. If the thing has a straight handle, there's a chance it's gone up someone's ass at some point in time. I don't have a statistic but the chances are definitely above zero. Think about it.

watch out when going to the surplus store, sometimes you get great deals, sometimes they try to israelite you.
i originally went there to buy one of those german folding mats, but they wanted 40€ for it!

    >Very neat. Is there a specific purpose to your collection.
i bought the canteen to use while PrepHole, also want to set up a summer kit based on UTV for next year, it just lacks the capacity for winter (it was for a mechanized army after all)

How are the tarps/ponchos? Good condition? Any repairs?

perfect condition - not a single ripped seam or any damage whatsoever

        [...]

lol I guess I'll have to draw lines of unkosher salt under every doorway and window in the house
I'll probably wax them because I don't need them urgently so I can spare the time and as you said with these tarps it is more about tradition than efficiency

looks repro, are you sure that is real surplus?
      is that any good?

i very much doubt that anyone would make a repro of a equipment modernisation that was never issued and is already cheap and plentyful.

Here is something for all the eurobros. zib-militaria is closing shop on the 15th due to the owner being super sick. Everything is super reduced, most stuff is half off, some even more then that. They have tones of WW1 and 2 repros and og clothing pouches and a bunch of other more modern stuff too. They also have tones of East German entrenching tools too. Thank me later.

        thanks for the advice.

          ok cool
the tool just looks brand new but being never issued explains that

i explained it in the now deleted thread (frick the jannies).
this is from UTV 85-90 (Uniformtrageversuch = Uniform Wear Trial) wich was slated to become standart issue of the NVA in 1990, but due to the fall of the iron curtain it was never widely issued apart from a few select units for testing.
It was still mass produced tho, so there were literal warehouses sitting around full of that stuff.

its supposed to be used to pull nails out of wood, but i dont know how well that would work.
Lots of good information on NVA Field Gear on this website: https://flaechentarn-kraus.hpage.com/

What are in those two bottles?

Also do you have additional wool footwraps or do you prefer socks when it gets colder with those leather boots?
