but as a general rule, in glowops it pays to have a deep abiding respect for the fact that adding complexity increases risk of failure in dramatic and unpredictable ways. even the CIA (nroc) can't always protect defectors, especially ones who want to do stupid shit like mingle with old friends or go back home unannounced. keeping the one guy alive will be more than enough of a headache for UA's glowwies.

Not that anon but I'd doubt the other two were ever in on the scheme, simply because it would have required the Ukrainian glowies to convince three individuals to do this instead of just one: they obviously need the pilot on their side to fly the helicopter to their destination, but the other two aren't so necessary, and trying to get them too risks compromising the entire plot if either decides they don't want to join in and reports it to superiors.
Admittedly I don't have all the information so can't say for certain it's not the case (for instance I could see one convincing the other two to join them if all three were close friends, held mutual unhappiness about the war, and were privately honest about this with one another), but overall it still seems unlikely.

Imagine if you couldn't get your families out of Russia, you know they're going to be punished for your defection. Let's say instead you "died" during your defection, they can at least apply for death gibs from the Russian state while arranging to get out later.

This seems to be the most plausible explanation to me.

        Anonymous

No he probably shot them, it's rare to get one air force defector, the odds of all three crew being defectors is very low. Somehow he began communications with ukraine intelligence, and they worked out a plan for him. It would he far too risky for him to share this plan with his crew as he would have to be 100% sure they would be ok with it and not turn him in. It would also he too risky for him to fly them all the way to urkaine alive. So most likely he killed them.

          Anonymous

I can buy it if they were in a struggle mid flight as his fellow crew started to ask questions like why they crossed into Ukraine. Doubly so if they start talking about loyalty to the nation. Of course, that's what the Ukrainians claim to be the case with a struggle before he had to kill the other two guys.

I'd still place a good chance that was a cover story for the other two guys who didn't want blow back to their family. Good way to go out as a "hero" who tried to stop a defector and died loyal.

This is definitely the most likely scenario. If Bin Laden was alive why wouldn't al-Qaeda come out and say it? The opportunity to stick it to the Americans and prove that they're lying and full of shit would be priceless. If he wasn't killed in the raid and died some other way it would still be beneficial to the movement to take away any credit the US could claim for finally getting him. "He successfully hid from America for a decade and then died of a heart attack and America tried to fake his capture for good PR" is still better press than "he hid from America for over a decade but was eventually found and ventilated at his house while an entire country cheered at his death."

Why didn't the crew stop him from defecting?

Did they seriously not know where they were headed until it was too late?

What are you going to do? Wrestle with the guy flying the helicopter so he can crash?

    >kill your entire crew somehow without crashing it
Did he? The only details I've read on how the crew died said they were shot when trying to flee.

reminds me of a Polish teritorial forces soldier who fled to Belarus, was used for propaganda and died a few weeks later
