I want to try out an outdoor range but it requires you to bring your own targets, no cans or boxes. My car is pretty small, do you know what are good compact targets and where to get them?

get something like this or make your own.https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1021158851?pid=606439
some cheap wood from homedepot, a staple gun, and random cardboard/pizza boxes. the only long part is the wood and you can still fit long enough pieces in your car. bring multiple strips of wood incase you shoot out 1 of the sides.

Even this is pretty space consuming

break it in half and shove it in the backseat or passenger side. unless youve got a motorcycle shit should fit in any car.

    Loud noises. Funny smells.

In all seriousness just go, be safe, start close. Once you gain confidence in your ability to hit the target, put it farther back. Repeat. Don't mind the other people there as long as you and they are being safe.

i do know how to hit targets. im used to shooting metal gongs. how does moving the target work? is there an attendant that does it or do you have to do it yourself?

Not every range has moving targets. Some have a little panel you type in what range you want it at, some are manual and you reel it in or out by hand like a clothes line, and some have nothing at all and just expect people to call a cold range and walk down range to set them up.

      Maybe I should reconsider

Okay, I guess I'll see tomorrow

READ the rules. Follow the rules. Expect the RO to keep an eye on you since you are a new guy. If you get corrected, don't take it personally, he is a teacher and you are there to learn. Don't worry too much about how well you shoot on this first occasion, just get familiar with the routines. Don't forget ear protection and eye protection. Don't let other, potentially rookie shooters annoy you, they are just passengers on the same bus. Don't annoy them by talking with them about the guns. Just watch, get familiar with them too. You can socialise on a later occasion.

I don't know if the range has 10 or 1000 attendants, if the regulars are a majority or a minority of the total, if there is a room for drinking coffee and talk or if it is just the range lanes. Some places will always be more social than others. Be polite, keep your temper, keep your eyes open, and after a few visits you will begin to see who are talkative and who are silent. Just like any other group of people really. At least you will be sharing an interest and that is a start.

RO here. A lot of people like to clown on range rules but be aware that they are there for a reason. If you don't like your range's rules, find a different one. If you find a local range with rules that you like, you will probably be the reason for the creation of a new rules or old rules getting more specific and restrictive.

    be safe
have fun within the limits of your local range

I only know of a few open spots that allow for shooting. That's where I first learned to shoot with some friends. Do you know how I can find other areas that allow it?

I'm not aware of a better way other than looking up each piece's website and seeing if they allow target shooting. Maybe call one that has an active office and ask them?
