field?

MREs often get discussed here, but how about field PrepHole?
Not necessarily a field kitchen, but individuals and small units packing enough foodstuff and tools for a decent meal, like beef stew.
Is it largely pointless due to introduction of various field rations and dry food?

    >Is it largely pointless due to introduction of various field rations and dry food?
pretty much, that was the point of those things after all

      Disagree.
There are many cases where you might get separated from your main forces, stuck in situations where resupply is impossible, and you have to improvise. You may have to scavenge, make do, cook whatever you can provision from the surroundings. Maybe you can trade with the locals... Or steal. Maybe you really have to go through an abandoned town, trying to find whatever has been left behind when the population evacuated.

All I am saying, that it is not inconcievable that you have to cook your own food out there. This has happened before, it will eventually happen again.
Knowing how to cook on the field with pots and pans and kettles is, I feel, an important basic skill for anyone who is headed into a conflict.

Yeah, and maybe you come across a Gundam, and you're the only one that can pilot it. Be serious anon, in those situations the most you need to know is how to skin an animal and how to start a fire. And that's in the extremely rare situation that happens, which it won't.

Fuck no. MREs are highly inefficient in terms of weight and space. They're also expensive. Preserved foods like MREs should be your last option for eating, not your first. Eat whatever is freshest and is going to spoil first, first.

The sad fact is that MREs are easy and fun while cooking takes skills that are highly lacking.

        Anonymous

        This right here.
your first option should always be "If there is fresh produce available, cook that first" and the start going through preservatives and save the ready-to-eat stuff for last, for those situations where you don't have anything else or if you don't have the possibility to slow down to cook and you have to keep moving/fighting.

Raw food have more water, bulkier, hard to pack, easier to spoil and be squshed. Cooking attracts attention, the last thing a packed up infantry squad wants to do. And if no one wants to carry the pot and grid iron, then cooking with bayonet, sticks and canteen is as good as it gets.

      Anonymous

      >bulkier
Fuck no, MRE's are more than 2/3 packaging.

      >the last thing a packed up infantry squad wants to do
What does an infantry squad have to do with any of this? Is that the only kind of larping you do? In a SHTF situation "infantry squad" means fuck all.

Stealing is wrong and a crime, that's not "comfy" at all.

Che had a policy to execute guerrillas that attempted to steal from, extort, or harm the people in the zone. In front of the unit and the people. That prevented it from happening. You can't compromise as guerrillas are the armed forces in said territories.

The guerrillas themselves often came from the people in the area as well, guerrilla rely on the people and order has to be enforced in territories under guerrilla control. You think it is fine because you are a soldier? Shows where your intentions lay. In the US military, court-martials and military prisons serve this role.

Good thread OP, lots of LARPers here who think they can oper8 but don’t even know the first thing about camping. Thankfully the ultralight nutters have more or less figured this stuff out and all that’s left is to scavenge last season’s gear from REI. I use a 1L nested Ti cookpot and 0.5L cup that also holds my mess kit and cat can stove and fuel inside itself

No. Just relying on rations is laughable in the prepper community especially for SHTF. They are good for a few days depending on how much you take with you, but you're going to run out sooner or later. If you're going to be out long term, you're going to have to sustain yourself from your surroundings.

So fucking true. Beans contain a toxin which is nutralized only after boiling it for 10mins. If you don't want to boil for an hour get a Thermos King 16oz food jar which is small enough to throw into your kit. Boil for 10mins then pour everything into food jar and come back in an hour's time or more to eat.

There comes a time when I'd rather carry a P38 and more water, that a philips fucking screwdriver in the backcountry. Even the P38 is useless in the backcountry because I don't carry fucking cans. A 4" fixed blade is enough. A paper sanding file, and eyedrops go farther than than a Wave needlenose and serrated sheep's foot.
            >t. Wave ecd at work and in town since '97. Backcountry? Pretty useless and everything good about it is a cheap compromise to LIGHTER, dedicated solutions that don't suck.

Cook time depends on whether you're out innawinter or summer camping, but makes a real thicc pizza that's good after a day's hike. Can also pack some butter/fresh garlic with some powdered parmesan packets to make flatbread.

For me, it's just a tube of peanut butter, deer jerky, and chewy vitamins. I prefer fishing since you can purify your water right there at the same time.

I dehydrate a bunch of jerky and make bulk hardtack biscuits that are as hard as concrete
    It's quite nice

I'll bring hard skinned cheese, good bread (or just flour to make flatbread) and some jam with me on almost every overnight hike I do. Cold sammich or toasted. For snacking, peanut butter.

If I'm actually cooking it depends on if it's just me or with the boys. With the bois I'll bring some meat and stew stuff for dinner the first night, just throw that shit in a the dutch oven with seasoned water over coals for a while. Butter powder is a fantastic thickener, dip flatbread in. Or a box of dry pasta. Brown meat in one pan, deglaze pan, cook pasta then fish the pasta out and use the starchy water as the thickener.

For just me I'll pack a steak for the first night. I'll also pack a few potatoes. Fry em in the pot or throw them over the coals wrapped in foil. Starch good, light and there's a good chance you'd be able to find wild potatoes somewhere innawoods, to which I'll add DON'T JUST GO EATING WILD POTATOES WITHOUT KNOWING HOW TO PICK OUT THE POISON ONES.

These can be pretty good. I'll carry my gold washing pan from a wash basin, dog dish and sluice cleanup. Both fall under Dave Canterbury's 5C's, which is reason enough.

I’ll be bringing this (more MREs not pictured) on my next 3 early next month. I know shit is lighter, more optimal, whatever but eating MREs innawoods is just comfy for me. Honestly the ultralight min maxing stuff really disgusts me. Yeah some great gear has come from it but the purists are insufferable and it’s just peak internet culture. Going outside should be simple, but they turn it into a game.

Being fickle with fish cock is the wrong move.
You buy it, you own it and you bond with your fish cock.
Jumping between fish cocks trying to find a better deal leads you down a path of constantly wondering if the cock you settled on is the right one or not.
However the man who has had only one fish cock is content and at peace.

I can't argue, but settling is settling and some just deserve better than the first fish cock that comes along.

For the live of me I don't get why get mre when just some cured meats, trail mix, some canned and crackers/biscuits is cheap, tasty and will not clog your intestines.

weight is a factor for some

      >just eat trail mix, cold cuts and biscuits
some people really want a hot meal, typically a meat stew with pasta or rice, and I can attest that at the end of a long day's hike or in a cold tent with the wind ripping outside, it can really uplift one's spirits tremendously in addition to providing calories

on the other hand I agree with you, MREs are overrated

That's all cold rations. While I agree with you and would pack similar rations I would add some freeze dried mountain house type meals. MREs are built around a warm bag of slop that you don't need to add water to and a convenient flame-less heater.
Warm food is nice to have, especially in the field.

You can do a lot with one cast iron pan and basic implements.
I am a frugal bachelor. I have mastered the cast iron pan. If you add a pot and ladle then I can do so much more.
