MREs often get discussed here, but how about field PrepHole?
Not necessarily a field kitchen, but individuals and small units packing enough foodstuff and tools for a decent meal, like beef stew.
Is it largely pointless due to introduction of various field rations and dry food?
>Is it largely pointless due to introduction of various field rations and dry food?
pretty much, that was the point of those things after all
Disagree.
There are many cases where you might get separated from your main forces, stuck in situations where resupply is impossible, and you have to improvise. You may have to scavenge, make do, cook whatever you can provision from the surroundings. Maybe you can trade with the locals... Or steal. Maybe you really have to go through an abandoned town, trying to find whatever has been left behind when the population evacuated.
All I am saying, that it is not inconcievable that you have to cook your own food out there. This has happened before, it will eventually happen again.
Knowing how to cook on the field with pots and pans and kettles is, I feel, an important basic skill for anyone who is headed into a conflict.
Yeah, and maybe you come across a Gundam, and you're the only one that can pilot it. Be serious anon, in those situations the most you need to know is how to skin an animal and how to start a fire. And that's in the extremely rare situation that happens, which it won't.
Fuck no. MREs are highly inefficient in terms of weight and space. They're also expensive. Preserved foods like MREs should be your last option for eating, not your first. Eat whatever is freshest and is going to spoil first, first.
The sad fact is that MREs are easy and fun while cooking takes skills that are highly lacking.
This right here.
your first option should always be "If there is fresh produce available, cook that first" and the start going through preservatives and save the ready-to-eat stuff for last, for those situations where you don't have anything else or if you don't have the possibility to slow down to cook and you have to keep moving/fighting.
Raw food have more water, bulkier, hard to pack, easier to spoil and be squshed. Cooking attracts attention, the last thing a packed up infantry squad wants to do. And if no one wants to carry the pot and grid iron, then cooking with bayonet, sticks and canteen is as good as it gets.
>bulkier
Fuck no, MRE's are more than 2/3 packaging.
>the last thing a packed up infantry squad wants to do
What does an infantry squad have to do with any of this? Is that the only kind of larping you do? In a SHTF situation "infantry squad" means fuck all.
>Is it largely pointless due to introduction of various field rations and dry food?
no MREs are terrible alot of the time jerky gets tiring and cooking feels good
shut up retard infantry doesn't carry its own food (save MREs)
also this belongs on PrepHole
Robbing local farmers' larders to fill the stewpot sounds mad comfy.
I stole a chicken once with tha bois, that shit was hilarious and delicious
Stealing is wrong and a crime, that's not "comfy" at all.
Che had a policy to execute guerrillas that attempted to steal from, extort, or harm the people in the zone. In front of the unit and the people. That prevented it from happening. You can't compromise as guerrillas are the armed forces in said territories.
The guerrillas themselves often came from the people in the area as well, guerrilla rely on the people and order has to be enforced in territories under guerrilla control. You think it is fine because you are a soldier? Shows where your intentions lay. In the US military, court-martials and military prisons serve this role.
Living off of provisions taken from civilians is based and Che was a pinko homosexual.
nagger mentality. Treating civilians with respect is what separates civilized militaries from animals.
Based and moral integrity filled. Never let edgelords convince you otherwise
This honestly
Even Mao understood you need the goodwill of the civilian population
Good thread OP, lots of LARPers here who think they can oper8 but don’t even know the first thing about camping. Thankfully the ultralight nutters have more or less figured this stuff out and all that’s left is to scavenge last season’s gear from REI. I use a 1L nested Ti cookpot and 0.5L cup that also holds my mess kit and cat can stove and fuel inside itself
Ultralighters *have* figured it out
Reccomend these for extended movements. The caramel apple flavor is great and it’s not full of absolute cancer like millennium bars or the like
lol I would fucking kill myself if I had to eat these goybars. Ultralighters are some of the most insufferable people on earth.
wow those are hilariously expensive
Surely anon is just bullshitting
>look them up
Wow that's surprisingly affordable. At $8 for 650 calories ($6.83 if you order in bulk) that's actually a bargain. Mountain House is $10+ for 600 calories and most of their pouches are fewer calories. Backpacker's Pantry and Peak Refuel are even worse value.
For $8 you could buy a 16oz bag of walnut halves that gives you almost 3000 calories.
It's pretty hard to beat the price of raw ingredients but I had assumed we were comparing the packaged meal to other packaged meals.
Nuts are a packaged meal. Just eat them out of the bag.
anti white yankee nagger lover
Ummmm it's called "we do a little foraging"
It's not stealing when it's commandeering for military purposes. Armies can afford to compensate civilians for damage. Unlike guerillas.
>It's not stealing when it's commandeering for military purposes. Armies can afford to compensate civilians for damage.
do you think they compensated the civilians they stole it from?
>Gonna get shot for a fucking chicken, someone is.

I have a policy to shoot all Che homosexuals on sight
che also said peasants were stupid and useless, hated black people and gay people, and said killing sexually aroused him
So you admire him.
Hardly who I'd go invoking as a moralist
Everyone has thier strengths and weaknesses. If you couldn't steal a peasents chicken, you probably couldn't rape thier daughters and he was likely a good Catholic, unless just another Godless commie.
>Che had a policy to execute guerrillas
Nobody cares, homosexual nagger.
Your homosexual answer has me siding with the chicken theif
This isn't even true, Soldiers under Che constantly committed horrible atrocious against civilian populations. One of the reasons he started hating black people was because he couldn't get them to stop raping and killing locals (white people were fair game tho)
>This isn't even true
But tgat doesn't fit the posthumous ideological narrative. Visit my webstore to buy his face on a teeshirt, they are very popular with the college kids. Manson also available.
> che did this
There is nothing worse than a communist.
What a nagger
that gif is funny aseago cheese bagel
Steal my chickens and ill shoot you like the raccoons that do the same...coon
Your chimkens will die bringing numnums to comfy bandit boys. We'd never disturb your sleep like a raccoon 🙂

you know they're doing that face as a bit, right?
ironic shitposting is still shitposting
>they're
but you don't.
You are a retard
did you shoot or trap those snakes OP?
I have nothing to add to this discussion because I think it’s retarded, but one of my favorite meals while out is andouille sausage in a tortilla. If you want to be extra, can of black beans with Taco Bell Sauce and maybe some pico/tomatoes&peppers to season them. Perlo is also an acceptable option. Currently working on an avocado toast recipe.
>Is it largely pointless due to introduction of various field rations and dry food?
No. Just relying on rations is laughable in the prepper community especially for SHTF. They are good for a few days depending on how much you take with you, but you're going to run out sooner or later. If you're going to be out long term, you're going to have to sustain yourself from your surroundings.
A whole leather bag of pemmican to last for the next decade.
RETVRN
Based
Hardtack for the next century as well right?
In ukraine for example i guess you could, fresh meat doesn't spoil. Imagine making your own bread and scrambling two eggs with salt and butter, put it on the bread and eat it with coffee, overlooving the thrashpit.
>speak the same language as the populace
>can't just ask to sit down for dinner in exchange for goods/services

why are you brown?
Canned food is king and worth every extra oz
You have not lived until you’ve eaten Dinty Moore out of a canteen can heated over a fire
I've made lobscouse a few times and it's surprisingly good.
Any sources on WWII foraging done by Allied troops in Germany?
I've seen it done in some movies and shows but don't know how common or widespread it actually was
It did happen. Mauldin did a bit on it for the Willy and Joe cartoon that circulated in the army paper during the war but I can't find it online. If I remember this afternoon I'll find the page in my own book and see if it comes with any associated commentary.
is Bastogne Germany?
McAuliffe authorised the 101st to forage for food when they ran low on supplies
that's what the "nothing you won't eat Malarkey" bit references: they found a quantity of flour and oil, and made a kind of fried dough thing out of it
and of course
morning doves are tasty, if you head shot them you won't lose meat
you mean pigeons?
Kettle bro.
I'll start, I love this one.
The Gas One Mini is great.
Lil' nesting gasifier and MSR pot.
Vintage Svea white gas.
Rocket stove.
Zebra pot. Like a billy pot.
>morning dove
they're mourning doves. meat looks nice!
>you mean pigeons?
pigeons and doves belong to the same family but are two different species.
>belong to the same family but are two different species
Much like humans.
>eat ze bugs
>steal them
Ziggers raiding authentic thread
What individual cooking kit do you guys carry in your packs?
I got this picrel titanium pot that, while good for ultralighting, might be a shit move for more versatile general field stuff. Haven't used it over a fire for fear of warping.
My Klean Kanteen sits snug into it though which is neat.
> Cooking Pot
> Not able to be used over fire
Am I missing something? Seems like it wouldn't meet the basic necessity of a field expedient cooking vessel.
I've heard that small and thin titanium stuff like this tends to warp and get fucked up if you were to place it in a fire. I don't get out much.
Ah, fair enough. Even if it were to warp, it should still be fine to use I would imagine. A little wear might actually give it a little character. Try it out and report back
You see these dried rice?
You see that water?
Put the rice in the water.
See these dry beans?
Put em in the water.
Wait 10 hours.
Oh "We need to boil the water" Oh "we need to cook the food".
Oh you fuck, you miserable FUCK. Enemy sees fire. Enemy smells the cooking.
No, no. No. Rice and beans soak in the water, you hapless, spoiled little fool. You bellend. You broken stop watch of a man.
Look, now they're soft enough to chew.
I dont give a fuck. Stop complaining.
Eat the fucking rice and beans.
There's your god damn survival mean you nagger.
You're alive. Keep digging.
Enjoy dying from uncooked beans.
So fucking true. Beans contain a toxin which is nutralized only after boiling it for 10mins. If you don't want to boil for an hour get a Thermos King 16oz food jar which is small enough to throw into your kit. Boil for 10mins then pour everything into food jar and come back in an hour's time or more to eat.
Truly, a scholar among men here lmao
we've all heard of cocaine bear, well here comes my payday...alligators on acid
No wonder the VC were so willing to commit to suicide assaults.
>t. doesn't cook
Actual human food >> the best MRE
Sarge doesn't want you to know this, but helmet doubles as cooking pot.
MREs became obsolete after freeze dried foods became mainstream especially with portable cookers.

>thermal signature detected
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
You know, fresh poop will leave a thermal signature. This can be minimized by pooping in the river.
Don't forget the anti gravity tablets.
>Is it largely pointless due to introduction of various field rations and dry food?
field rations are just that, for in the field
field kitchens are necessary to provide hot food, you dont want troops to eat MREs for longer than is necessary
You can absolutely do a stew in the field, I’ve even done pan pizza before
>pan pizza
Wait you dont need an oven?
>room temp pizza dough, either buy pre bought and throw it in your pack or pre mix the drys and thoroughly mix when you're ready for pizza
>nonstick skillet, recommend cast iron
>skillet over coals, first for high heat for a minute
>roll out dough
>into skillet for 1 minute
>flip dough, edge of coals while turning pan for even browning
>sauce, cheese, toppings. Throw a lid on to ensure the cheese melts
>bout 4 minutes
>pizza
>a pizza is a sandwich
>an open-faced sandwich is a pizza
I'll take the salami radish pizza
Don't give hin attn. He didn't get it.
Don't get between me and my pizza cunt
Through the invention of largely deployed field kitchens and MREs (off-the-shelf like the Nordic or industrial like US, r*ssia etc.) smaller WW1 or earlier style unit carried raw foodstuff rations are pointless if we are talking about modern militaries with developed, uniterrupted supply lines.
I'd imagine revolutionaries or other terrorists could utilise field PrepHole, but seeing as they fuck off back to their civilian families when they're not fighting they'd mostly eat homemade shit small-scale field PrepHole is mostly pointless in this day and age
Don't forget picrel boys
you don't carry a leatherman? lol
NGMI
No, he's right and you're right. But LM heavy. Should I spam oc camp stove gear?
leatherman MUT doesn't have a can opener though
cuz it's a POS
heavy? grow muscles
>heavy? grow muscles
There comes a time when I'd rather carry a P38 and more water, that a philips fucking screwdriver in the backcountry. Even the P38 is useless in the backcountry because I don't carry fucking cans. A 4" fixed blade is enough. A paper sanding file, and eyedrops go farther than than a Wave needlenose and serrated sheep's foot.
>t. Wave ecd at work and in town since '97. Backcountry? Pretty useless and everything good about it is a cheap compromise to LIGHTER, dedicated solutions that don't suck.
medisterpølse?
Seems like an excellent chance to savor the flavors and aromas.
Cook time depends on whether you're out innawinter or summer camping, but makes a real thicc pizza that's good after a day's hike. Can also pack some butter/fresh garlic with some powdered parmesan packets to make flatbread.
For me, it's just a tube of peanut butter, deer jerky, and chewy vitamins. I prefer fishing since you can purify your water right there at the same time.
I dehydrate a bunch of jerky and make bulk hardtack biscuits that are as hard as concrete
It's quite nice
I'll bring hard skinned cheese, good bread (or just flour to make flatbread) and some jam with me on almost every overnight hike I do. Cold sammich or toasted. For snacking, peanut butter.
If I'm actually cooking it depends on if it's just me or with the boys. With the bois I'll bring some meat and stew stuff for dinner the first night, just throw that shit in a the dutch oven with seasoned water over coals for a while. Butter powder is a fantastic thickener, dip flatbread in. Or a box of dry pasta. Brown meat in one pan, deglaze pan, cook pasta then fish the pasta out and use the starchy water as the thickener.
For just me I'll pack a steak for the first night. I'll also pack a few potatoes. Fry em in the pot or throw them over the coals wrapped in foil. Starch good, light and there's a good chance you'd be able to find wild potatoes somewhere innawoods, to which I'll add DON'T JUST GO EATING WILD POTATOES WITHOUT KNOWING HOW TO PICK OUT THE POISON ONES.
>just flour to make flatbread
>I'll just
Did you bring your mixing bowl genius?
... yes? I'll either collapse it or stuff it with food stuff.
These can be pretty good. I'll carry my gold washing pan from a wash basin, dog dish and sluice cleanup. Both fall under Dave Canterbury's 5C's, which is reason enough.
Let's have it Martha Stewart of the Wilderness. Post your "campfire scones" recipe condescending homosexual.
>mixing bowl
lol
lmao
You'll learn one day kiddo
I’ll be bringing this (more MREs not pictured) on my next 3 early next month. I know shit is lighter, more optimal, whatever but eating MREs innawoods is just comfy for me. Honestly the ultralight min maxing stuff really disgusts me. Yeah some great gear has come from it but the purists are insufferable and it’s just peak internet culture. Going outside should be simple, but they turn it into a game.
I didn't know fish cocks were a thing you could buy.
>buy
I always suggest renting a fish cock before commiting
>renting
Being fickle with fish cock is the wrong move.
You buy it, you own it and you bond with your fish cock.
Jumping between fish cocks trying to find a better deal leads you down a path of constantly wondering if the cock you settled on is the right one or not.
However the man who has had only one fish cock is content and at peace.
>the man who has had only one fish cock is content
I can't argue, but settling is settling and some just deserve better than the first fish cock that comes along.
just want to clarify, I am NOT a gay fish
For the live of me I don't get why get mre when just some cured meats, trail mix, some canned and crackers/biscuits is cheap, tasty and will not clog your intestines.
>canned
weight is a factor for some
>just eat trail mix, cold cuts and biscuits
some people really want a hot meal, typically a meat stew with pasta or rice, and I can attest that at the end of a long day's hike or in a cold tent with the wind ripping outside, it can really uplift one's spirits tremendously in addition to providing calories
on the other hand I agree with you, MREs are overrated
>cured meats, trail mix, some canned and crackers/biscuits is cheap, tasty and will not clog your intestines.
That's all cold rations. While I agree with you and would pack similar rations I would add some freeze dried mountain house type meals. MREs are built around a warm bag of slop that you don't need to add water to and a convenient flame-less heater.
Warm food is nice to have, especially in the field.
Soup is all you need, can even use dirty water, add all ingredients, rolling boil.
Soup.
Erbswurst is an excellent camping food and very easy to make at home.
My cooking setup is small enough to fit in my mess kit unfortunately not any good for mass distribution
Gonna go backpacking and make some udon
>spotless.
My old one broke so I got a new one
You try finding a metal dowel of that size
You can do a lot with one cast iron pan and basic implements.
I am a frugal bachelor. I have mastered the cast iron pan. If you add a pot and ladle then I can do so much more.
