Fencing

Fencing is fun. I do foil/sabre. Any other fencers here? I think it's pretty /k/... We can argue about grips just like with guns, after all (Visconti >>> Belgium).

so is a paintball gun if you club somebody with it, your point?

"On 3rd November 1968, Admiral Benigno Varela and journalist Yolivan Biglieri confronted each other with swords in Lanus and began the duel.

It all came about after Biglieri had written an article accusing Varela of being a traitor shortly after President Illia had been removed in a military coup of which Varela was a participant.

The duel lasted three rounds, a total time of about twenty minutes, but was eventually stopped by the referee (a judge) when the two men were too badly injured and bleeding profusely.

Since dueling was illegal at the time, it was denounced by several people but the cases never saw the light of day and the two men never reconciled their differences. They did however, recognise the bravery of each other, since it was agreed that they would fight to the death."

let me know when fencing is done without protective suits, otherwise Wrong board

Unfortunately it was ruined by pistol-grips and lost any remaining tether to actual swordfighting.

It’s fun. You don’t do it for the scars, though. They are just a byproduct of it and many people don’t wear any. If you are really interested, come to Germany or Austria and join a fraternity.

you fight Mensur because it is a ritual that bounds you with your brothers, you shed blood for the club, show that you are willing to stand and take it ect.
Mostly it's a real pain in the ass because you have to get up early after a long nights work of moving beer from the crate to the Papst. So you can go and do strike repetition for an hour with a heavy saber held over your head the whole time. Only to be dragged back into the press Keller for a morning drink before stumbling of to class a bit more than half drunk.

It's quite a adrenaline rush but if are fit and train more than the other it's pretty safe for you. That aren't that many frats that do a lot of " low cheek /Wange tief" (that means no cheek guard and low hits are ok. ) so the scars are often next to invisible and in the hairline. Once I'm at home this evening and if I'm in the mood I can look if I find some pictures. I should have quite a bit from my frat I just don't know on what drive they are.

Club I went to had a bunch of shared gear and lent out gear for beginners. I think my helmet, cheap plastic chest plate, and a pair of crappy gloves would have been under $150 though I borrowed gloves from club and got my helmet/plate through club, so IDK what sourcing they used.

A feder is maybe $400 new on the cheap end but the club had plenty for practicing. It did cost $100/month.

My 5' 10" girlfriend was curious about the sport during our senior year of high school. She joined her school's team, chose Epee, and proceeded to mercilessly BTFO other girls at meets due to her height advantage. Literally surpassed my comparative skill as a three year foil dude in two months, I didn't care 'cause I wasn't some chink with high blood pressure who took sports too seriously. I chauffeured her home from all her away meets 'cause both her parents worked and got road head consistently. The sport skyrocketed her self esteem so I didn't have to deal with typical female emotional moronation and instability. It was a win-win.

Maybe 5-10%? It's nerdcore d&d types but with the filter that is definitionally a physical activity and exercise. Still going to skew male but so it goes. It was one club in a majority male region.

            is there a lefty advantage

Yes, in that most righties are used to normal righty vs righty mirror match and lefties get to practice left v right constantly.
Still need a certain skill floor for you to be and able to do anything with that.

It'll teach you humility too. Nothing like being 30yo who's been doing it for six months and being bodied by a 15 year old who's been practicing longsword since he was 8 and gets picked up by his mother after meet. Skill and practice sure do matter.

I really don't like olympic style fencing because it's too gamified. It's just two guys swiping at eachother with car antennas at lightning speed because the first guy that takes a very light swipe on the hip automatically loses even if the other guy gets stabbed straight in the heart .00001 second later.

no different than sperging out over if a shot was over a cardboard perforation for A vs C zone in like IPSC. Sports have rules and arbitrary shit, it's been that way since forever. Fencing at least still has you running back and forth poking each other with a sword-like thing. The electronic scoring gives it a nifty feeling anyways. Hitting a sabre skyhook is awesome. With a good ref you don't notice the priority bullshit that much.

I do think that foil/epee could be slightly better with heavier spring requirements. 500g/750g is too low.

Outside observer take: it looks like 90% of the sport is involuntary superfast wiggling of the foil like a noodle. It does not appear that an opponent can parry or absorb the storm of chaotic wiggles and the point is over extremely fast. If I'm wrong, then explain. But it seems like anything with some heft would display a lot more strategy and thoughtful coordination.

nope that's about it. lots of waggle and wiggle and footwork. This YT channel has a lot of old fencing footage if you want to see how it has developed since the 1910s: https://www.youtube.com/@schlager7
Generally, in fencing distance control > actions on the blade.
When you're actually fencing, it doesn't feel as waggly as when you watch fencing. I guess it's the perspective shift of being in front of a blade pointing at you and holding a blade.
fencing used to be even MORE waggly actually, In like 2000(?) they reduced how bendy a foil blade could be. lots of flicks back then.

I should add that the fundamentals haven't changed in like 200 years, despite the advent of more waggle and electronic scoring. Check out this foil fundamentals video from the 1930s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUAp5BuYk5c

you'll see just about the same stuff nowadays, just less 'stiff' and 'proper'.

Is fencing really fun though? I always liked the idea but when you look at the olympics it’s just too guys jumping at eachother and in a fraction of second it’s all over. And they all have these high tech suits to determine who touched who first.
Doesn’t look cool, doesn’t look fun.
Is it just the olympic meta that’s gay like that or is the whole discipline like that?

      Anonymous

It's fun, but foil and sabre have right-of-way rules that can be difficult for beginners to understand and learn. Basically whoever initiated the attack first has priority for the attack, the other fencer MUST defend from the incoming attack by making blade contact, this blade contact changes the attacking priority so that the one who originally initiated the attack must now defend.

This leads to situations where your opponent and you will both get near simultaneous touches but only one of you have the right-of-way for an attack, the other was obligated to defend and didn't.

Figuring out who holds the right of way at any given moment is what the referee is for, and at national/international level events you'll have slow mo cameras to assist in figuring out who held priority.

The right of way rules make for a less purely physical sport and introduces a lot more strategy as you can force situations your opponent can't easily respond to.

Might as well just give two dudes some sticks and let them beat each other.

Fencing the sport is about strategy and talent, not who can take the most abuse or dish it out.

That’s what zweihander combat is about, they use every bit of their weapon from the pommel to the crossguard, and it’s a lot more involved.

hema is bullshit for fat tards and pedos. A smallsword used by a trained fencer is so fast compared to a big sword that you're already been stabbed through the wrist and left with a metal spike through your lung before you're even got in position. The tip of a fencing foil moves faster than a bullet.

Yes that's my point though, finding out who can get beat up more and keep fighting can be done with or without the zweihander, like I said give each person a big stick and you'll get 95% of the same result in combat.

If it were a sharpened zweihander that might be different, but it's non-lethal combat where the entire point is to determine who can physically endure the most hits and keep swinging. Baseball bat, stick, zweihander, it's irrelevant.

I don;t care about what I consider the fooolishness of Hema which is nearer to the end of what stage righting became when it became fake and ridiculous in the 1750s then it is to any combat. people studied fence to stay alive, if carrying around some parade sword kept people alive they would have done it. All that mattered was fence and the smallsword for over 300 years. Long before the gun came it was the ONLY sword that mattered if you wanted to win. The only reason anything else existed was for use on horse.

Why did the FIE ban the cool helmets for foil? Being able to see out clearer and seeing the fencers face was cool.

We saw them in Beijing back in 2008 then they got banned from tournament use and they basically don't exist for foil today.

They were extremely unsafe. The plexi could separate. FIE pushed for them because it ‘improved tv ratings’ (could see the fencer’s expressions when fencing).
      I’m glad they’re gone.

Dueling was very fashionable in Paris in the 20s during the post was cocaine craze and the French kept dueling to first blood until the 1970s the last famous one being between a French communist and a de Gaulist in 1968. proper late dueling blade have a slot in them and should be wiped with medical alcohol before use. IME there's just not enough of an adult participant base to have open bouts in most areas. I assume major metro areas would be the exception.
HEMA clubs that have ranked fighters could be another option- you have to pay for/participate in group lessons ongoing, but you do get a motivated pool of sparring partners and a shot at ranked competition if you want. HEMA is 99.99% geared to adults while sport fencing is the other way atound, and if you've fenced, you will automatically come in head and shoulders above any other HEMA n00bs

They are from two different duels, one that took place in Hyde park in London and a subsequent one from a duel in Dublin where it was finally settled with a death. They are black glove sword because the winner wore a black glove to remind him of the man he murdered as was normal. It was a mark of disgrace. Most people who killed in duels regretted it and while often not punished judicially, society excerpted them to provide for the victims family for the rest of their life or be shunned

Narration is in French. This is newsreel footage of one of the last (if not THE last) epee duels to first blood in France. The duel was in 1967 between Gaston Deffere, Mayor of Marseille and Rene Ribiere.

Defferre was a participant in the last duel in France that took place in 1967 when Defferre insulted René Ribière at the French parliament and was subsequently challenged to a duel fought with swords. Defferre yelled ‘Taisez-vous, abruti!‘ (‘Shut up, stupid!’) at Ribière following an argument in the French National Assembly. Ribière demanded an apology, Defferre refused, so Ribière demanded satisfaction by duel. René Ribière lost the duel, having been wounded twice. He escaped relatively uninjured, however.

Unfortunately it was ruined by pistol-grips and lost any remaining tether to actual swordfighting.

      do you mean this?
How is it moronic it's pretty much the British P08/12 which is considered peak design for the cavalry charge and the full stop in cavalry sword history? Fun fact the first German killed on the western front in WW1 by the British was killed with a P08 at around 6:30 am on 22 August 1914, near the Belgian village of Casteau

My homie you need more CANT on that blade. Stick it in a vice and cant it down like 7° or something. It really does help.

Cant CAN help, depends on your style, you don't HAVE to cant your blades though. At the end of the day it's mostly preference, I personally like a slight cant of 3 or 4 degrees.

Don’t mess it up, get some sort of canting bar and make sure to leave a small amount of ‘straight’ tang so that your guard can still go on flush. I find that a heavy ‘pitch’ cant helps me a lot with simple attacks getting on target. I don’t bother with too much of a yaw cant - usually my blade bends in anyways

i'm sorry, I can't seem to find amy mention of "blade cant" in historical duelling, warfare, swordplay, or anywhere at all outside of your made up game. Maybe you would find more earnest discsussion on Wrong board

Probably because they would use a different turn of phrase but with the same meaning

Having a slight angle on the blade vs the grip isn't something invented JUST for sport fencing.

              >I can't seem to find amy mention of "blade cant" in historical duelling, warfare, swordplay
That's because you have literally not read any original literature about swordplay or fencing from any culture at any time, or you would know that the blade:handle angle ratio has been a hotly debated topic for something like 1800 years at this point. Men have died in duels over this subject. Armies have been equipped and re-equipped on the finer points of this question.

seriously, why are serious fencers ALWAYS thinking about man love? It's like a rule at this point. Must be something about sucking all the soul out of things in pursuit of autistic minmaxing that just inherently brings out the gays

From what I've heard, saber and messer groups usually have rulesets more aligned with real combat.
Head hits are worth more than limb hits and flat strikes don't count. That sort of rule.
They're even more rare than normal fencing groups, but the culture is less homosexual.

can someone then please explain why if I execute a simple lunge when I'm being marched on and my opponent is doing a windmill-y big circular action and waiting for my response it's still his touch?

To maintain right of way you must maintain the attack forward, you can't pull back while "attacking". It's a lot about watching wrist/forearm movement and following the tip momentum.

So a windmill-y big circular action would most LIKELY (if being referred properly) be counted as giving up the right of way.
