But also no, ottomans won thanks to superior artillery, machine guns won't change shit and just be priority targets.
That is assuming full automatic fire in itself isn't a psychological deterrence enough to call off the siege, it could be. But even then, it's only a matter of time before byzantine crumbles down.

I think the machine guns can butcher the artillery crews easily

      Yes

Vickers have more range than the artillery back then.

The large canons the ottomans used to destroy the walls were extremely slow and vulnerable, the men around them would have been swept away by machine guns. The largest ottoman gun, Basilic, could only fire 3 times a day and had to be cooled down with copious amounts of oil after each, and it could only be moved by 60 oxen and 400 men. So yeah machine guns would make a huge difference, even 4 with a million rounds each. All the Byzantines would have to do is form a strike force that would use the machine guns to thin the forward ranks and then penetrate into the rear to take the batteries and most importantly, Basilic.

Byzantium was a dead man walking at that point. It was torn apart by religious schism and civil wars (nothing new there, but it was reduced to such a point that it could not afford it anymore) and reduced to a collection of villages huddled around the, at the time, decrepit Theodosian walls and the Peloponnese. Europeans didn't have the unity or will necessary to mount a rescue after the disaster at Varna and the Byzantine citizenry openly proclaimed to the emperor that they would rather submit to the Turkish Turban than the Latin Mitre. Machine guns can't do anything to fix the sheer rot in the Byzantine system.

Actually, both the "Holy Roman Empire" and the newly-formed "Russian Empire" welcomed a Fall of Byzantium because it strengthened their own claims to being successor to the Roman Empire.

The Catholic Church was somewhat worried about it because they feared that Italy would be targeted next, but aside from like one short campaign Italy wasn't a target for the Ottomans again. So they stopped giving a shit too.

Mehmet would be the one carrying those guns, and the Byzantines would be the ones getting shot.

Maybe if they shot the boats in the golden horn to sink them.

assuming Mehmet had 100,000 battle ready men, then you'd need to hit 1 in 40 shots to kill all of them, assuming they dont route after the first 20% die in one of the fastest, loudest ways to die anyone had ever seen

it would certainly be enough to repel any individual assault
