That said jets are fun to work on and aviation in general is fun so anyone considering it should give it a go. contracts include maintenance costs moron

A modern production version of all of those aircraft costs more then a F35.

accurate, new F-16 70/72s are $64 million in 2021 dollars

That's cheaper than those UH-60s Norway is buying.
      What gives

the F-35 was literally designed to be cheap and low-maintenance, that is the entire purpose of the program, people are just whiny pissbabies and wanted to axe it while it was still paying off research costs and therefore stupid expensive (like every other US program in recent memory)
thankfully the chair force has access to the money printer and it wasn't added to the massive list of "project successful: cancelled, 8 units produced"

        Anonymous

        >contracts include maintenance costs moron
That depends heavily though, a country already paying for F-35 training/maitanance/spare parts when they make a new F-35 order aren't going to pay the same as a country buying F-35s for the first time.

Also some countries are fine with only a handful of spare parts, some countries want dozens of spares, also these contracts can also include weapons so a country that already has a stockpile of American air to air missiles and air to ground bombs and missiles, you probably won't need to buy a ton more when you place your F-35 order, but if you're a country that normally operated European or Russian jets previously and don't have a stockpile of American munitions, well when you place your F-35 order you're probably going to add a billion or two for missiles and bombs that are compatible with the F-35.

So the final cost of the actual plane itself is so far removed from the contract sticker price.

in the era they were made.
The only one that still holds up in 2023 would be the F-15 and those F-18s cost $65 million flyaway today.
The only country actively producing cheaper "modern" jets in 2023 is China/Pakistan with the JF-17 and thats a marked downgrade from the F-35.

U.S. Defense Department ordered eight F-15EXs over three years for $1.2 billion...
        or
        https://www.forbes.com/sites/erictegler/2020/07/24/how-much-does-an-f-15ex-cost-boeing-and-the-air-force-dont-agree/?sh=732a40c167bc

Air force budget put the price at 129M$ flyaway. I think we will get the best numbers form the isreal contract for 25. Slice it anyway and F-15EX is more than F-35. Which makes sense considering its a bigger plane.

          >Air force budget put the price at 129M$ flyaway. I think we will get the best numbers form the isreal contract for 25
typically the FMS contract cost of a fighter jet is about 2x flyaway, so $125-150M appears to be the ballpark

Because even with all the pods, new radar, EW suite, etc. The EX is only good for long range missile truck duties to complement the superior F-35. They're only being bought as a handout to Boeing/MDD, and because they're slightly less expensive to maintain.

    >List the inflation adjusted cost of an f15, f16, f18, A10, f22 and f35 fighter jets for USD in the year 2021
It is important to note that the costs of military aircraft can vary depending on factors such as the specific variant, production year, and quantity purchased. Additionally, it is challenging to provide an exact inflation-adjusted cost as it would require detailed information on the specific time period, model, and other factors. However, I can provide you with approximate estimates for the unit costs of each aircraft in 2021 USD, based on available information:

F-15 Eagle: The F-15's unit cost varies depending on the specific variant. The F-15EX, the latest version, was estimated to cost around $87.7 million per aircraft in 2021.

F-16 Fighting Falcon: The unit cost for an F-16 Block 70/72, one of the latest versions, was approximately $64.3 million in 2021.

F/A-18 Super Hornet: The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet's unit cost was about $70.5 million in 2021.

A-10 Thunderbolt II: The A-10's unit cost is harder to estimate in 2021, as it has not been in production since the 1980s. However, if we were to adjust for inflation, the unit cost would be roughly $20 million per aircraft.

F-22 Raptor: The F-22's production was discontinued in 2011, with a unit cost estimated to be around $150 million. Adjusted for inflation, this would be approximately $173 million in 2021.

F-35 Lightning II: The unit cost for an F-35 varies depending on the specific variant (A, B, or C). In 2021, the approximate unit costs were as follows:

    F-35A: $77.9 million
    F-35B: $101.3 million
    F-35C: $94.4 million
These figures should be taken as rough estimates and may not reflect the exact inflation-adjusted costs for each aircraft in 2021.

      Anonymous

I wonder what the F-22 would have ended up costing per unit if they kept the original order numbers.

      Anonymous

additionally as production decreases and the supply chain becomes problematic the maintenance of a given aircraft becomes more expensive.
The problem is that military assets are not investments. They will never make their monetary value back or reach a break even point like idk buying solar panels and saving money on electricity after 20 years.

Even if you didn't buy newer stuff and would still keep like the F-4 flying today you'd still have to pay for it's maintenance. Just to give an example: the fuselage and the wing panels are basically handmade. A guy has to shape the metal by hand. And as you don't keep buying F-4s every couple of years, any spare parts would either have to be stored for decades or made on-demand as the line would have been shut down long ago.

And after all that you're still stuck with the capabilities from the 70s, and any upgrade - radar size, electronics, software, engines will cost as much as a new airplane will over time.

The combat missions it's made to fly don't require those things.

Saying the f-35 is shit because it loses when you plop it 1v1 in close range with an air superiority fighter is like going back to ww2 and saying aircraft carriers are worse than Dreadnoughts because if you plop an Aircraft Carrier and Dreadnought next to each other the Dreadnought is going to win because it will just swing it's guns around and start laying into the aircraft carrier.
Both of those scenarios are never supposed to happen and if they do it's not the fault of the f-35 or the aircraft carrier it's the fault of command that let it get in that situation.

This shows what their intended combat missions would look like in peer air warfare.
    >breaking the S-4000

They're just supposed to be able to get within range to deploy their weapons without being detected then dip dip dip whilst also being cost effective to have fricktons of them stationed on every airport america owns whether it's at home, in another land or floating. As well as not be one trick pony's that can effectively (not perfectly) perform a heap of other low risk fighter roles. For example pulling up on a commercial flight that hasn't responded in awhile and is flying off it's flight plan or telling the daily russian probes into alaska to frick off.
Their peer combat missions with china or russia are likely going to be massive stealth armada's in the air overwhelming with numbers.
Their supposed to be a mass production work horse that can eventually replace everything else that has come before it while modern specialised bombers and air superiority fighters get built.
Oh and also supposed to be a massive see-all hear-all sensor and network node with the ability to manage and command specialised dones.

          https://theaviationist.com/2022/06/10/israel-claim-its-f-35is-can-now-reach-into-iran-without-air-to-air-refueling/

Yeah the drop tank meme is an interesting one because the F-35 already has enough fuel and anyone generally needing to do operations at that long of a range has aerial refueling capability. Like if the US really wanted to it could probably, right now, put the pilots of an F-35 squadron based in the US on meth and have them do an airstrike in Belgorod or St Petersburg. Frick it probably wouldn't even require meth, just some coffee mid flight. They have tankers literally everywhere.

Even Israel has the things. If they really needed to do operations inside Iran they could probably get the US to provide a stratotanker over Iraq and blow through Syrian airspace, or absolute worst case conduct air raids on Syria and Iraq with non-stealth platforms to allow tankers to orbit over Iraq.

            Anonymous

To be fair, without refueling or drop tanks, the stated combat range of the F-35 is somewhat short, but that was clearly a design choice to make all the other things it does do work so well, since refueling is a common practice and they're also working on loyalwingmen style AI stealth refueling drones, though that's primarily a Navy project at the moment then AF from what I've read, but I have little doubt that the AF will happily buy some once the Navy gets it working, though they might be a tad gimped from needing to be carrier compatible.

If they really needed to do operations inside Iran they could probably get the US to provide a stratotanker over Iraq and blow through Syrian airspace, or absolute worst case conduct air raids on Syria and Iraq with non-stealth platforms to allow tankers to orbit over Iraq.

Wonder if its a tank in the internal bay? If you only want one bomb anyway why not?

      >It's limited to same height as every other fighter aircraft
No it isn't. The f-22 and f-15 can fly way higher. This is essential for BVR fighting because it extends the range of missiles.

With prices this low i'd be rather surprised if a few more European countries decide frick it and just buy some F-35 A's. I wonder if we might make an offer to Morrocco if Spain holds off on the F-35B for their carriers.

Norway bought MH-60Rs, anon. ASW helicopters are very expensive. They're nicknamed "flying frigates" as a reflection not only of their capabilities, but also their cost. It's all that sonar and stuff.

Nah. That's the job of the NGAD. The F-35 mogging everyone despite making so many compromises to be an acceptable strike plane and cost fairly low cost is just funny.

how did the lockmarters manage to develop a 30+ year long game plan back in the 1990s and take over an entire generation of jets before anyone else even realized what was happening?

are there any other defense companies that have ever done anything else like it? maybe ship builders?

Well japan also does a thing where if ANY defense contractor wants to get out of the business, they basically have to sell themselves (or the military portion of the company) to Mitsubishi heavy.

Is it a /k/ meme now to take the contract amount and divide it by the number of purchased aircraft to get the cost per aircraft? Ignoring that it includes repairs, training crews to repair, production, missiles etc etc. I remember a few weeks ago there was a similar thread laughing at the new Flying Tractor aircraft costing a lot. The morons in the thread cited how Indonesia got Super Tucanos for X million. Yet if you followed the same logic, the Super Tucanos were actually more expensive if you bought the same amount of aircraft as the Flying Tractor.

Of course the thread shortly died after that but people really seem to do this kind of thread nowadays.

In this case the contract is explicitly just for these aircraft (and some misc engineering stuff), with support on other contracts.

the Chinks don't count RND cost inside. $70m is flyaway cost but its probably higher than this. There is no substitute for building 1000 of these suckers but the secret is - manning each of them with highly trained, professional and combat ready pilots.
