>expected modern warfare to be asyemmtrical urban warfare with guerilla gangs ambushing supply chains, snipers eliminating entire squads, and undercover platoons behind enemy lines assassinating high value targets
>instead its trench warfare again, drones are the only means of eliminating enemies and lines barely move because of artillery
What the hell man. Are there any modern conflicts going on now that aren't just drones fighting drones?

No anon, this is barely modern warfare. Both are using hand-me-downs from someone else. Russia using the USSR's and some of their own stuff and Ukraine using the US/Europes and some of their own stuff.
This situation unfolded primarily due to a lack of air support. You wouldn't see this situation unfolding if, say, the US and Russia had been in a shooting war (caveat being no nukes are used, of course), because the US can into SEAD and would leverage the air force to help push ground forces forward.
Instead we're seeing this because there's an asymmetry in threat. The largest threat is from artillery right now, so that necessitates trenches. You can't use your air force to target the artillery, so its all counter battery and drones to try to clear it out.
I think if you are a country or group that can't into SEAD and leverage an air force, then yeah, you're probably right that a lot of conflicts are going to end up like this, because artillery is much cheaper to procure than an air force, so the best defense against that is trenches and taking defensible positions. Then it ends up a game of hopscotching from one defensible position to the next as you try to push forward.
Though as we've seen, one of the best ways out of this situation is very accurate PGM like HIMARS. Then you start performing suppression of enemy artillery instead and can use that to push your advantages instead. Its not quite as good as a solid air campaign but its gotta do.

Very informative thank you. Did you learn this through observation or are there some sort of resources I can read up on to study the nature of modern warfare?

What would happen if ukraine had an air force to clear the artillery? Is there a reason Ukraine isn't sending spooks into Russia to assassinate Putin? Does aerial superiority render urban warfare impossible?

        Anonymous

Mostly through observation and reading expert and military opinions and assessments.
If Ukraine did have an air force, the issue is always a question of air defense. Russia has a good amount of it still, but there's holes in it that are causing them to miss things like the larger drones that have been striking their oil facilities.
The other thing is that its unlikely that Ukraine could have overwhelming air superiority, they'd need a lot of aircraft for that. They do still have some, because we've seen a few instances of weapons that can only be fired from the air hitting things. They, like Russia, can only deploy them for specific things that they calculate are worth the risk.
As far as urban warfare, I'm not sure really, that's out of my realm of knowledge. I know that, depending on the type of "urban" we're talking about, there comes a point where a destroyed set of concrete becomes more like a bunker, and it can be VERY difficult, even with air superiority, to drive people out. Here's a Westpoint article describing the concept of how rubble actually helps a defender:
        https://mwi.westpoint.edu/defending-the-city-an-overview-of-defensive-tactics-from-the-modern-history-of-urban-warfare/

Not impossible but difficult (for the side not with AS). USA had air superiority in the ME but still found itself in urban combat, Israel has air superiority but is constantly in urban combat in GAZA

Fricking vatnik-brained clown, we literally have the case of the NATO bombing campaign against Serbia to see how that goes, it was envisioned to destroy the entire Serbian military in 3 days, instead it did jack shit destroying like 5% of the Serbian military in 3 months and really only succeeded by pivoting into terror-bombing the civilian population.

Not giving them $250 billion worth of jet fighters and infrastructure is not 'tying both hands behind their backs' you absolute Black person. NATO's overwhelming ISR advantages, which they share with Ukraine on demand, is probably the only reason Ukraine is still operating in the field

No, both sides are unable to gain air superiority, and this is what is left.

Russia cant because of western AD and complete lack of SEAD tactics at the divisional level. Ukraine cant because of russian AD, and the same lack of SEAD.

Modern warfare also includes an active capable airforce and armor. Which neither side really has at the moment. Ukies don't have the gear and vatniks are corrupt and incompetent. All that's left is this degradation to WW1 conditions where each side is just slinging artillery rounds at reaching while sitting in trenches. Atleast were getting an idea of the effectiveness of cheap drones. We need a counter weapon to this that doesnt involve expensive missiles. Look at what the Houthis are doing. Slinging drones at ships forcing the usage of ridiculously expensive missiles to shoot them down. Literally a multi million dollar missile versus some shitty drone that's a fraction of the cost. This cannot continue

Neither have the range to hit drones dropping bombs. If you check the average FPS loss on shot over distance, it would need like 4 times the flight distance to have a chance of taking drones out at the average heights they're dropping bombs from.
As for kamikaze drones, the average mobik isn't going to have the skeet skills to shoot one in the second or so they have before it slams into them or the ground and blows them up.

Lasers. That's where the majority of laser development is going, defence rather than offence. Expensive to install, but cheap to fire and a practically endless magazine.

Many newly commissioned western ships in recent years generate a whole lot more power than they can use, with the expectation laser defence will require the juice.

Its modern warfare in the sense that most countries (and especially the ones most likely to top off in a large conflict, like Russia, Iran, North Korea, etc.) literally cannot afford to do anything else and/or fricked their industry too much to do anything outside of 1990’s/early 2000’s shit at best. Russia is still largely using Soviet era shit and Ukraine while better than before is mostly just getting Western hand me downs that have been mothballing in warehouses the last two to three decades and cheap drones to run analog kamikaze attacks into Russia for vital targets. That said even if America utterly btfos basically the entire planet in technology on a military level, there’s still the question of tactics needed that this kind of war will bring, and Ukraine has some of the best experience on the planet right now since its actually fighting a prolonged conventional war that didn’t simmer down in a few weeks/months or devolve to police action with guerillas running around.
