Expandable Batons?

Are these viable if you aren't a cop?

I have one that I keep in my car door in order to break my own car glass or somebody elses car glass in the case of a wreck. (In addition to a legit glass breaker)

Are they really viable as a legit weapon tho? They definitely fricking hurt, no question, but I doubt they are really as effective as they were in Watch Dogs.

they are technically non-lethal or "less lethal" in a police context, but if you hit somebody in the head they can be VERY lethal

This. My kids uncle was drunk and started harrassing police officers that were making a arrest unrelated to him. They told him to please back away repeatedly, then one of the had enough and drew his expandable baton and tried to hit uncle in the thigh. Drunk uncle then attempted to dodge it by ducking it and got bonked in the head big time.
      >retareded drunk uncle got bonked by police
      >unconscius and bleeding
      >ambulance and hospital
      >massive concussion
      >cracked skull
      >luckily no haemorrhaging around the brain or permanent brain damage
      >his iq probably slipped down by -2 or so tho

I always liked just keeping it collapsed in my fist for sternum jabs. Best way to knock on a door. If you whack someone in the head it’s akin to deadly force but if you aim for the arm and miss..:I would think it could be an issue if you do tune someone up and haven’t had any training. There’s a reason cops have to go through the basic every so often to at least know the targets. You can find them used on GB for a fair price vs buying some Chinese pot metal shit.

Based, instead of letting cops hit him in the leg and potentially getting a limp, he took the hit to the part of the body he wasn't using anyway

Yeah, it's not a self defence weapon, but it allows you to a deescalate a situation if some angry individual comes up to you

They are illegal at least for carry in many states and countries so look up your local law. They are also almost universally considered a deadly weapon in the courts, so you need to have a pretty watertight case if you use one. If you crack someone in the head with one they can certainly kill them. Not always, but it's a risk and you will have a hell of a battle in court because you beat someone to death. Food for thought.
If a jogger swings on you and you pop him with an asp and he goes down and does the Floyd shakes, the prosecution is telling the jury that his client punched you and in return you beat him to death with a metal bar. You probably doing ten years.

there are people that would only get pissed off if they got hit in the head with these things. best self defence weapon, legal and costs under 1$ - a rock in a sock. when cops search me and ask why i have it in my pocket i just say it defends me from black magic

Great self-defence weapon, if still inferior to a gun. Also, you need to get a good one made of solid steel, like the 4140. Also, while not hard, it counterintuitively isn't that easy to use - you need to learn to strike in specific way that focuses most of the force at the very tip while limiting the recoil not to compromise your grip. That way any hit to non-soft part of the opponent basically ends in bone damage for him. Also some training of opening it in the middle of a valid strike is important, as you may not always have the time to separately open it and attack/defend.

I'm a Mall Cop by trade and I agree it's more of a psychological tool than a weapon when used correctly. A calm, firm voice and deploying the baton will make 9/10 belligerents back down somewhat when they see you're willing to fight and equipped to do so. I've never had to draw my gun on the job but the Baton probably has to come out weekly to deal with people who decided to try to start shit. For the 1/10 of belligerents who are still coming at you after, I'd recommend going for the ribs and the sides of the knees, and as a previous anon said try to ensure that the tip of the baton is the point that makes fist contact. Practice with it so you don't end up fricking your wrists when you hit a dude.

the problem with them is that they are hollow and not front heavy enough, thus its much harder to break bones with it, also if you arr fighting a person with lets say a knife its gonna be hard to get a heavy enough strike at either forearms or head to break those bones and you might just end up stabbed and other guy might only have some bruises
better than empty hands but not great

Less than a regular club of their extended length, enough to beat someone to death with. You decide if that means "viable".

  11. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

If you are interested in buying one, go to shop and test one yourself. Buying online is kinda blind draw since the lenght matters a lot.
I am tall mfer so I got myself a 24'' one, but it unusable for me because its hard to swing.
I tried 21'' one and it's night and day difference.

Here in EUcuckstan it's legal, but frowned upon, cops will charge you with excessive defense if you go full out with it. You can frick up somebody badly with it.
Understand that hitting someone, especially with the tip, is large swing force applied to small area, it shatter bones like butter on good hit.
Best used to attempt to hit opponents hands instead of body.

They hurt way more than you'd expect, heavier too. Uncle was a copper and me and my brother stole one off him when we were younger.

We used to fight with it when we were teens and I remember him catching me in the knee with the tip with a good swing and it hurt so much I almost shit myself.

Anyone know the best way to lube up one of these? iirc the old one I had seized up and wouldn't close.

Fun fact- if a cop is holding one of these, it’s less lethal. If you are holding one, it’s a deadly weapon and the cops (and armed citizens) can shoot you and justifiably say they feared for their life. Just carry a gun.

I used to be a cop before I realized it was frickin gay and quit. Expandable batons generally suck dick. Only good one is the Peacekeeper RCB. That one feels like a softball bat. Carried it after watching an ASP bend delivering ineffective legs strikes and watching another ASP bounce off a car window and break a female LT's teeth lmao. PR-24, the RCB or (my favorite) the wooden straight stick are the best options for batons. I carried a Baltimore style espantoon to heavy calls before my gay lib chief made me stop.

Basically, ASPs dont even have a purpose for cops, except for departments to avoid liability by saying officers are issued LTL equipment.

KCK and KCMo police still carry them, and use them to great effect on crackheads.

Yeah some depts allow them still. They deliver way more concussive force to suspects. Can KO or break bones easily. Also way more intimidating than a little metal stick

Dad had been a NYPD from the 40's-70's and had been through a number of riots and other head bashing activity's. We had one like this under my parents bed I use to play with and would wonder about all the dents and splits and mangled up top and how many heads made them all!
      >Wish I still had one of them!

When I was a cop in MD, Baltimore still carried these, the old timers would twirl them with the lanyard. We had some city guys come over and they still get them in the cruiser. Hence the term wooden shampoo.

I've had some crowd control security guard training and the LEOs there taught us to go for the forearms and shinbones with the batons. And yes, it hurts a lot, and I've seen it being very effective outside of training, albeit with an actual police baton rather than an expandable one.

I'm also not in burgerland but a place with very low firearm crime, so, yeah. I guess context matters.
