Shooters hit a skill plateau and start chasing better scores with new gear, and the organization has to change the rules to comply with the trends because they don't want to lose their most dedicated base of competitors.
If it were up to me, everyone would be issued the same rifle/sling and be required to shoot without a fancy jacket. Basic canvas coats with elbow pads would be fine because the concrete surface of many ranges does get unbearable after a short time in a proper prone position.

Not really, because the suits can only be so stiff. Instead of making an arbitrary line between ''regular jacket'' and ''shooting jacket'' based on some aesthetic differences, they define legalilty by the stiffness of the suit. I've shown up to matches in a padded motorcycle jacket that would definitely be considered a ''normal jacket'' (as in, not just for shooting) but would absolutely fail the stiffness tests, for example.
That being said, yes, the special jackets are stupid. Not every rifle is exactly the same, and on a large enough production scale the differences will be enough to exceed the differences in shooter skill, making your competition pointless. Then there's the fact that rifles need to fit a shooter, and so if you just get a general service rifle it's going to be a matter of selecting the right biology (or surgical enhancements) rather than actual shooting skill.

Olympic shooting is about absolute bare bones BASIC marksmanship. NOTHING else. Scope? too easy. Tripod? too easy. Use a fricking sling, its hard, use diopter sights (best ones are more accurate than most scopes at identical distances), it makes you a better shooter. Learn the effects of a bad position that a scope and tripod hide. Learn about proper breathing and triggering. (paraphrasing here) no need to breathe properly or squeeze the trigger properly if you have all this tactical equipment to make it easier.
This weird ecosystem of weird gear is what you get. It's F1 for shooting. No indicators, emissions regulations, no windows, no lights no boot. And so on. I hope you understand better why Biathlon, ISSF and Palma guns and gear look so weird.

Unreasonably harsh recoil for what it is. If you're shooting 2-300 shots a week like I did last spring that matters.
Norma steelmax or gamebore is usually the same price or even cheaper if you buy atleast 1k at a time and is actually pleasant to shoot.

I noticed the difference between that and fiocchi lead shot but I figured thats the case with all steel shot. But I usually only shoot around 250-500 shots per summer with my hunting pals, so i find it manageable. Last time I bought it 0,19€ per shell. Also when I use my Benelli SL80 it softens the recoil very well.
Cant really complain tbh. Its mostly just FMJ for range shooting out to 200m, at that range its more me than the ammo that affects. I use Norma for hunting.
Its a bit like the shells that i use for the 870, aka just for rangetime fun with cheap ammo.

For hunting? You can by semi-auto rifles, but limited to "hunting-style" semi's like BAR etc.
For range shooting/dynamic competition etc you can by semi-auto rifles like AR etc, but it must be relevant for whatever club/class you use it for. I can buy an MR223 or similar for use in my club, for example.
As for semi-auto shotties, the limit is for 5 round mags(same as pump etc), but you can only have 2 rounds in it while hunting

Your list needs correcting. Finnish gun laws do a great job at filtering out morons; In all my years of shooting here I've never had to deal with the kind of dangerous behavior I saw on Czech ranges (or the absolute terminal idiocy that I witnessed during my trips to the US).
Sure, it's a bother that it takes me time to get a rifle license and even longer to get a pistol license. But it also means that my local range is full of responsible shooters who respect the four basic rules of safety, rather than attention-deficit-disorder-suffering mouthbreathers who go around flagging other people or lock and load while people are still downrange. It's an acceptable price for the safety it provides and it gives me confidence in my peers at the range and competitions. If you lack the patience and attention span to deal with it, you would not have been a particularly good range buddy anyway.

I agree. Target rifle competition in general is a gear race and it has been since the 80s at least. It happens in all shooting sports it seems. 3-gun, IPSC and IDPA are no different. Shooters hit a skill plateau and start chasing better scores with new gear, and the organization has to change the rules to comply with the trends because they don't want to lose their most dedicated base of competitors.
If it were up to me, everyone would be issued the same rifle/sling and be required to shoot without a fancy jacket. Basic canvas coats with elbow pads would be fine because the concrete surface of many ranges does get unbearable after a short time in a proper prone position.

Instead of making an arbitrary line between ''regular jacket'' and ''shooting jacket'' based on some aesthetic differences, they define legalilty by the stiffness of the suit. I've shown up to matches in a padded motorcycle jacket that would definitely be considered a ''normal jacket'' (as in, not just for shooting) but would absolutely fail the stiffness tests, for example.
That being said, yes, the special jackets are stupid. I like how silhouette does it:

Not every rifle is exactly the same, and on a large enough production scale the differences will be enough to exceed the differences in shooter skill, making your competition pointless. Then there's the fact that rifles need to fit a shooter, and so if you just get a general service rifle it's going to be a matter of selecting the right biology (or surgical enhancements) rather than actual shooting skill.

Olympic shooting is about absolute bare bones BASIC marksmanship. NOTHING else. Scope? too easy. Tripod? too easy. Use a fricking sling, its hard, use diopter sights (best ones are more accurate than most scopes at identical distances), it makes you a better shooter. Learn the effects of a bad position that a scope and tripod hide. Learn about proper breathing and triggering. (paraphrasing here) no need to breathe properly or squeeze the trigger properly if you have all this tactical equipment to make it easier.
This weird ecosystem of weird gear is what you get. It's F1 for shooting. No indicators, emissions regulations, no windows, no lights no boot. And so on. I hope you understand better why Biathlon, ISSF and Palma guns and gear look so weird.

I noticed the difference between that and fiocchi lead shot but I figured thats the case with all steel shot. But I usually only shoot around 250-500 shots per summer with my hunting pals, so i find it manageable. Last time I bought it 0,19€ per shell. Also when I use my Benelli SL80 it softens the recoil very well.

Your list needs correcting. Finnish gun laws do a great job at filtering out morons; In all my years of shooting here I've never had to deal with the kind of dangerous behavior I saw on Czech ranges (or the absolute terminal idiocy that I witnessed during my trips to the US).
Sure, it's a bother that it takes me time to get a rifle license and even longer to get a pistol license. But it also means that my local range is full of responsible shooters who respect the four basic rules of safety, rather than attention-deficit-disorder-suffering mouthbreathers who go around flagging other people or lock and load while people are still downrange. It's an acceptable price for the safety it provides and it gives me confidence in my peers at the range and competitions. If you lack the patience and attention span to deal with it, you would not have been a particularly good range buddy anyway.
