Why even bother with an air force? They're literally surrounded by NATO

To maintain operational experience just in case. This is why even landlocked countries have navies of some sort, even just a few patrol boats.

navies to help control waterways or move armed groups along them make sense

        >TIL Bosnia is NATO
Bosnia's constitution explicitly says NATO has absolute freedom to do whatever the frick they want - if NATO wanted they could plop down a couple of Patriot batteries in Bosnia and it would be totally legal. There's a NATO regional headquarters already there. So yeah, Bosnia isn't in NATO the same way Sweden isn't, not the same way Armenia or even Austria isn't. And it's formally joining as soon as the Parliament is finally formed - the majority is already there.

I live in Canada. We have around 40M people. Servia has 7M. Canada's GDP per capita is around 52K USD per resident, Serbia is around 9K. Despite being a semi-wealthy country, Canada can barely afford a credible Navy, Air Force, and Army. That shit is expensive. We could, but then we'd have to stop spending on other things like education, infrastructure, and healthcare.

Serbia, you need stop pretending to be a real country and buying shit you don't need. You can't afford a bucking air force, at least not a credible one. Spend your money more wisely or everyone will continue leaving, you will continue being poor, and your planes will serve no earthly deterrence. No one is going to invade you and you have no ability to invade anyone else. This is pathetic. If you really want a military, spend your money wisely on: Infantry, drones, artillery, SAMs, EW and proper training.

The entire leadership of Serbia is deeply corrupt and tied to organized crime. I'm talking their president (a former Milosevic flunkie) employing gangs that owned torture chambers and industrial mince meat machines for use on human corpses. Both his son and brother are regularly seen with mob bosses and hooligan groups that just so happen to really hate investigative journalists and opposition politicians. His minister of defense got caught using military intelligence personnel to guard drug deals and regularly threatens to invade neighboring countries. Their chief of police (a bimbo in her 30s) was a frick-toy for half the mob and regularly derailed investigations, gave away informants and stole evidence. Their parliament is stacked with oligarchs or their flunkies, bimbos, war criminals, useful idiots of all stripes and colors. They caused no less than three major ecological catastrophes in the past 5 years through shady deals with foreign shell companies and fricked every national budget three ways to Sunday.

Everyone in Serbia who holds any amount of power knows their days are numbered if Serbia ever becomes a democratic state with strong rule of law - which is a risk if they integrate with the west. But they also know how opposing the west will end. Ideally they want to trick the west with overtures; get a windfall in investment and political favors - but still continue being a corrupt, amoral shit-hole below the surface.

Funny thing is they're getting their wish: the west is so desperate to finally get Serbia off the list of problems in Europe that they chose appeasement (again) as soon as Serbia made the most shallow of concessions and the US is busy handing them Bosnia and, to a lesser degree, MonteBlack wrapped in a bow.

How do you imagine Serbia would support Russian airframes when Russia can't generate enough sorties to crush Ukraine?

You don't just buy aircraft like a new riding mower and run it for years on blades and oil. Just training their pilots takes many sorties (noobs forget what sorties are for) which wears out parts and requires periodic maintenance and repair.

  12. 11 months ago

The Rafale, is fully the equal of the F-35, Su-57 and J-20 as a fifth generation fighter. Like the KF-21, it is a 4.5 gen with development potential to be further upgraded to fifth gen. That is why many countries, such as India, Indonesia, Qatar and the UAE which have requested F-35s or were looking at other fifth gen options like the Su-75 and KF-21, are now Rafale users.

The Eurogay Typhoon meanwhile remains a 4-4.5 generation aircraft with no further development potential, and the countries who are using it primarily (UK, Italy, Spain etc) are all F-35 users and have no incentive to develop it further

Rafale is a fifth generation aircraft
