Electromagnetic Weapons anyone?

I just love these things, what do you guise think about them? frick powder guzzlers, let's discuss some scifi shit that are actually market-ready

I'm not that anon, and I've got no beef with FW, but Demolition Ranch showed off the older model of this thing on YT a long time ago. FW was not the first to show this on YT.

The concept is cool, but they have a loooong way to go before they're anything more than a toy. Those things look like crap up close because they're 3D printed, and they're less powerful than a paintball gun.

we can't even get polymer case ammo to be adopted it'll take decades for them to be competitive the electronics tech just isn't developed enough

No they fricking aren't, those aren't even weapons, they're toys. First practical coilguns will be big ass launchers, DARPA already designed a mortar using this principle. Makes sense for all kinds of reasons, big guns waste a lot of propellant, which means more recoil and noise. Since they rely on explosives to kill rather than a direct hit they can be low velocity. Good for mounted repeaters too, AGLs are notoriously finicky, coilguns would be simpler.

cool, i did not know this existed. seems like a great usecase for the tech

      >let's discuss some scifi shit that are actually market-ready
Market ready for what? It's an overly complicated and extremely expensive toy.

market ready as in it's already being sold. i realize this thing isn't something you'd take to war but it's certainly way more powerful than a paintball gun like the other anon said. those metal dowels would frick someone's day up if used in home defense, for example

        >it's certainly way more powerful than a paintball gun
        Lono.
In the forgotten weapons video this thing is shown firing 5/16" x 1/2" dowel pins at about 220fps. Such a dowel pin weighs 76 grains, the kinetic energy calculates out to 8 flt-lb or 11 joules.

Meanwhile a typical painball gun is 300 fps, and a standard paintball weighs 50 grains. That calculates out to 10 ft-lb or 14 joules.

          This.
People are unable to process basic math ffs.

To be considered a "weapon" by EU law it would be at least 20,j and bz at least 55,j to match 22short...

      >low velocity
They have a ship mounted railgun that is way higher velocity than conventional cannons.

The handheld ones are shit, and likely always will be. But theoretically the only thing limiting the velocity of a rail gun is the capability of the projectile and barrel materials to withstand the friction, and the space you have to build it.

But unlike the coilgun railguns are a complete meme. Billions spent with nothing to show for it outside of some cool slow mo footage, meanwhile people have been refining coilgun tech in their garages.
        >theoretically the only thing limiting the velocity of a rail gun is the capability of the projectile and barrel materials to withstand the friction, and the space you have to build it.
The limiting factor with coilguns is capacitor tech, which is constantly improving. In comparison, the railgun erosion issue is so far from being solved I'm pretty sure we'll figure out fusion reactors first. The only thing railguns are good at is wasting taxpayer dollars and looking cool doing it.

They're impractical now and going to remain impractical for 10 years after which chinks will copy it. They haven't done it yet but I am mad already.

I could make a lethal coil/rail gun, it would probably weigh 20-30 pounds and be bulky as frick, but itd work.

Not gonna buy one for the forseeable future but I'm def watching the progress their making.
    Latest iteration looks cool af.

Small arms will forever be gunpowder based, big cannons and stuff will become railguns and coilguns.

Why, because it's easier to scale up electronic guns, ans make them more powerful, then it is to scale down, and it's easier to scale down gunpowder guns then it is to scale up.

Somewhat nifty, but these are toys with no actual utility.
