Diplomatic obfuscation is the crux of Pearl Harbor butthurt and that doesn't rise to nearly the same level as vatBlack person rape and murder. And also Americans don't really give a frick anymore because no matter how you wanna define it we avenged the frick out of those guys. Russia cries war crimes because they know this is their last chance at their bullshit, and they frickin' blew it big time.

It’s also possible they’ve removed the last few seconds of footage from every sequence on purpose to avoid giving out too much info to the enemy. And the movement of the hand is enough to float them

            Guns are not the answer.

The USN has no defense against this. Those shitty chain guns are worse than CIWS, which was the obvious GO-TO for defense against a drone-boat attack, and they never worked.

            >reminder that a 20mm rotary cannon firing 4500 rpm didn't work on boats

In this video you can clearly see they have to stop the boat to let it get hit.

I've witnessed this personally several times, the USN just pretends that small arms work for close-in defense and they don't.

It'll work just fine if nobody is on watch (See: Cole, USS). If you're operating that close to the coastline of an enemy you're actively at war with, though, somebody had darn well better be. This is like going to war with Iran and sitting in port at Bahrain with no watchstanders.

for something that's barely bigger than a surfboard like these drones yes I agree you should probably break out the missiles for the ultra-precision, but anything big enough to be optionally manned or converted from a manned platform can be killed by gun long before it ever gets close enough to explode - the real issue is a disguised suicide boat, which isn't really a question of weaponry

Disguised suicide boat, atleast in regards to disguised as a normal civilian boat, is the reason the US developed their laser system. Idea being you give warning and if they continue to close you disable their engines with no risk to people onboard IIRC.

Waves move boat unpredictably out of the target pattern after the projectile leaves the barrel.

                End of fricking story.

the americans recognized this as a problem in like 1995 and have put a lot of money towards systems that will let them engage motorboats and the like. any us warship with a trained crew will probably be able to just snipe the motorboats from a few km away with their cannons. i fully expect any deployed crew to be capable of this. their guns are literally stabilized and laser ranged it's just a fricking point and click video game at that point.

that being said russians and chinese will continue to cope and seethe

IIRC the US has also continued developing laser systems capable of neutralizing the engines or warheads of various craft, whether UAV, USV, speedboat, or missile as a recognition of these issues. I think the boat part spurred on by the experience with the USS Cole

It's just a matter of spamming a ship with hundreds of independent drones while keeping the signal from being intercepted or jammed. It would be exceedingly difficult for China to sink a carrier, but a mission kill is a possibility. If they can find it, that is.

        Anonymous

Well, some of them are. LCS, unfortunately, never received the ability to aim its 57mm gun with anything other than a joystick and TV screen. Which leads to lots of near misses like with the helicopter in the video.

RAM, however, has been able to target small craft for about 20 years, and most (but not all) American warships carry RAM these days. It won't stop a large swarm, but it'll probably stop a small one.

Yes, you could easily fit 500-1000lb explosive which would be more than sufficient to deal critical damage to a 4,000ton displacement frigate. Not a sure thing, and it depends on a lot of factors, but even if the Makarov limps home it's going to be out of the fight for a while.

Depends of course on damage control and where ship was hit. During WW2 smaller ships survived torpedoes because they hit extremities. Like HMS Jibberin

            >I refuse to believe Russian """people""" are this far below even subhuman status
They are, Russians believe they're the main characters of reality. The Soviets shaped the dead Red Army soldiers of WW2 as martyrs that died so that they can live today. Basically like a commie allegory to Jesus Christ dying for the sins of humanity with Nazis as Satan. Every fricking shithole village in the middle of the taiga, no matter how small, will have some type of monument to the "Great Patriotic War" so that every squinty eyes kalmyk will remember everyday that his grand parents died fighting for a country that he has basically no connection to. Stalin and his successors built a cult of delusion that Russians (kind of like israelites) are the chosen people to lead the world order and that millions of people died for that.

USV attacks are deadly to warships, the USN doesn't have a satisfactory solution for this.

Guns absolutely fricking suck for this application. The radar/laser/flir guided chaingun mounts the US uses are trash.

The 20mm rotary cannon on CIWS was never able to hit small boats in the first place

It was stupid to try to put Bushmasters on everything, they can't hit anything and neither can the 3-barrel .50cal guns they have.

The Navy has no solution to boat attaks you ground pounders just don't know how impossible it is to hit something bobbing on the water.

I don't see the USN dealing with this until they modify NULKA or something. Gun CIWS is and always has been trash. You shoot your own battleships with it.

        Anonymous

Yeah, put a torpedo ideally detonates below a ship to make it rise up and then fall into the pressure bubble, putting stress on the hull. Detonating next to the ship with half of the explosion going into the air isn't the best thing. Unless the drones can somehow dive in the last few seconds.

          Anonymous

It's kinda moot because modern ships have no resistance to contact explosions anyway. A couple hundred pounds charge against the engine room and it's fricked big time m80

Most ships that weren't ww2 battleships or carriers didn't have torpedo defenses. That's including the majority of cruisers. As built ww1 ships had no defense against the torpedoes of their time.
