They still wouldn't. There's no reason to buy an expensive F-16 in an age where everyone is in the process of replacing their F-16s with 5th gen.

That would mean earning something through merit and effort rather than having it be handed to you off the backs of a collective, something that the Euro bugbrain can't fathom or tolerate.

Who is an ovepriced F-16 supposed to appeal to? The Eurofighter I understand: you want an air superiority fighter, it's newer than the F-15, and the F-22 isn't for sale. Makes perfect sense. But with the Gripen you can't even buy them if you're third worlders on the American's shit list, like you can with the Rafale, because the Gripen'd engine is American and they'll just block the sale. Not even that niche exists. Seriously who the frick is this thing for?

But even if you didn't want to buy the F-35 (for some reason, it would be moronic but let's pretend the country is moronic) why wouldn't you just buy an F-16 instead? So many have been produced that there will be spare parts for F-16s available long after all our grandkids have changed their genders and committed suicide and that doesn't even touch on the price.

And then if your country has the 2 engine 'tism the F/A-18 is a thing. And that one even has a dedicated electronic warfare variant. Don't get me wrong, I love the way it looks and I'm glad it exists but as an actual product being offered for sale it's the definition of redundancy: the aircraft.

Gripen also has tons of Bongloid systems, so Bongoloid can also block sales. Argentina was interested and Bongs told them to frick off. That being said, Brits also prevented Spain selling used Mirage F1's to Argentina by threatening to terminate all joint programs with both Spain and France if sale goes thru. They also blocked sale FA-50 to Argentina. As result only realistic source for their fighters is China as Russians don't produce anything they can afford to keep operational.

But even if you didn't want to buy the F-35 (for some reason, it would be moronic but let's pretend the country is moronic) why wouldn't you just buy an F-16 instead? >why wouldn't you just buy an F-16 instead?
Because your politics prevents you from buying American. Brazilians were pretty pissed off by NSA and CIA Black folk meddling in their internal affairs when they bought their Gripens.

The gripen is a (relativly) cheap anti russian fighter that does what it is supposed to do, we know saab is already developing something new and realistically their next fighter might be a collaboration with the brits.

Anon pls the thing is cheap to operate, it literally has half the engines to maintain

            Anonymous

It would have been cool to see Gripen do well at that and be a big part of the last hurrah of 4th gen development. I just don't think it has enough over other options like the 16, it isn't cheap enough to edge in on the really light budget fighter niche that FA-50 seems to be cleaning up on, and now that F-35 has it's legs under it there's basically no market. Even if you need NATO but don't want American for some contrived reason, Rafale and EF have more momentum behind them.

Good plane that just came in at the wrong time.

Okay, let me explain this to you, real quick. The f-35 costs the same to get as the gripen. Anybody with a brain is getting the f-35. If not the f-35 because of politics, they are instead getting the rafael (if they want the best 4.5gen) or the korean fighter (if they want the cheapest).

Furthermore, the Swedes only made the gripen in the first place because as a neutral country they did not want to rely on other countries to get fighter jets. Now that Sweden is a part of NATO, they have no reason not to get the f-35 themselves.

Except most of the key components are British or American. The Gripen uses F18 engines and American/German/British missiles.

      >The f-35 costs the same to get as the gripen.
Cost of fighter is lot more than fly-away cost of the fighter. Shit like training equipment, maintenance equipment, weaponry, fuel, salaries for involved personnel and shit. Add in all costs, Gripen is probably cheaper to own and operate for its life cycle.

      https://i.imgur.com/eyeMtZQ.png

Missiles are getting outdated, actually. We need articulating lasers to cover any attack angle.

        >Add in all costs, Gripen is probably cheaper to own and operate for its life cycle.
Nope, F-35 parts are cheap, F-35 training is readily available, and the maintenance cost per flight hour is nearing F-16 levels

          Anonymous

Stop lying. All data on F-35 flight hours has it pegged with F-15E.

All data on f-35 simulator costs shows it's cheaper to simulate than a gripen.

          Anonymous

yeah, the big long term cost advantage is that f-35 parts are going to be mass produced for thousands of aircraft

          Anonymous

          >F-35 training is readily available,
In a clients country prior to purchase? homie pls, building the training infrastructure is fighter sales usually takes at minimum couple years. You need simulators, frick ton of other training aids, train instructors for actual maintenance, other support and flight crews.
          >maintenance cost per flight hour is nearing F-16 levels
So, it almost twice as expensive to maintain as C/D Gripen. Fricking thing was originally designed be maintained by one or two professional mechanics and half dozen conscripts. When Sweden switched to professional military about decade ago, they kinda fricked up as they didn't even nearly enough maintenance personnel to run all their aircraft. They are restarting conscription as we speak because new millennium didn't bring the eternal peace end of Cold War was supposed to bring. It requires minimal support equipment on highway base operations.

Gripen spare parts over a 50 year period are actually more expensive due to the tiny production run.

          >Gripen spare parts over a 50 year period are actually more expensive due to the tiny production run.
Most expensive individual component to maintain is engine. Older Gripens share engine with legacy Hornets, Boeing T-7A, KAI T-50 series and HAL Tejas. E/F shares engine with Super Bug, KF-21 and HAL Tejas Mk2. It is also going to be used by HAL AMCA and HAL TEDBF, if those are completed prior to E/F Gripens run out of flight hours, given HAL's track record that might be the case.

Gripen had an estimated MMH/FH (maintenance man hours / flight hours) rate of 10. So 10 hours of maintenance per flight hour.

Meanwhile as of late august 2022, Lockheed Martin said that MMH/FH rates were 3.8 for the F-35A.

Is that MMH/FH for older Gripens or E/F? Age of aircraft might be an issue for older Gripens at this point.

The 10 number was its operational design to my understanding but those numbers are 16 years old from what I can find, might be lower or higher

Anyway I hope that SAABs next fighter is as kino as draken or tunnan, but might be asking for too much

              Anonymous

I checked some newer sources and his numbers seem correct. The 6 was average between all variants, the B and C are both around 7.5 and earlier this year the A earlier in January was around 4.8 with ongoing improvements through the year

            As of August 31st.
