      Sure it does. In museums.
Besides, technology has advanced and we are able to get better resolution and often in real-time through use of satellites. We also have other sigint gathering machines like drones that don't put pilots in harms way.

      >not armed
The Y-12/F-12 were armed with missiles, the SR-71 was not. Nothing could intercept it, so why arm it?

The advantage to the Blackbird was a satellite is no secret no matter where it is, and they have a regular orbit. You can plan your sneaky sneaky activities around them. The Blackbird was by no means stealthy but you could get eyes on anywhere in the world in hours. That said, I highly doubt the US officially gave up that capability in the 90's and doesn't have an acceptable replacement.

The fact that we haven't heard about it's replacement, still, in my opinion just shows how hard the US has been sandbagging since the end of the cold war. No need to show your hand so I don't blame them.

Wasn't it actually kind of a piece of junk? When it was on the ground it leaked oil and fuel and shit.

      >When it was on the ground it leaked oil and fuel and shit.
this was a design compromise to achieve desired tolerances at speed.

        Anonymous

the seals were designed to leak at all but operating conditions due to heat and pressure expansion

The SR71 was subjected to extreme thermal temperatures at altitude. That means it would expand and seal the leaks that were present when it was on the ground. The fuel (JP-7) was used to cool the instruments, life support and other sub-systems in the aircraft. It had a very high flash point and was thus very safe to handle.

I know all this, but it's still pretty shitty isn't it?

If you knew why it leaked on the ground why did you ask the question?

I didn't ask why it leaked, I was saying it's not as glamorous as people act like it is. Being a clunker on purpose doesn't cha ge that it's a clunker.

              >Being a clunker on purpose

it was great at being the fastest plane in the world
it probably wasn't great at being a reliable, polished aircraft system. it was pretty much experimental

leaking fuel had nothing to do with it

I actually wonder if with modern technology and knowledge we've learned from SR-71 itself if we could make a plane that performs the same but doesn't suffer from fuel leakage and also isn't such a maintenance nightmare

the a12 oxcart is faster then the sr71

        sr71 is Mach 3 the a12 is Mach 3.3

There's probably other planes out there that go faster. Few years ago nasa made a scram jet and that thing went 8 or 9 times the speed of sound so there's some crazy stuff out there.

It's not a stealth craft, its only purpose was to fly really high and really fast, taking pictures. Flying over enemy air space is bad. No matter how fast it was, it couldn't outrun missiles. Having an expensive aircraft, that can't attack, can only take pictures and can't avoid enemy fire is pointless. Drones do its job at 1/20th the cost.

truth is it was going to eventually with the advent of hypersonic sam development becoming commonplace, and the exorbitant cost exceeded its value

      >It's not a stealth craft
this isn't true at all, the SR71 was covered in low observable radar absorbing honeycomb material

It was the first airplane to have stealth features built in. How the tails are canted in, the sawtooth leading and trailing edges ( under the high temp stealth material that made up leading and trailing edges).
You can read all about it in this book. It’s a mind blowing read.

      >it couldn't outrun missiles
Actually, it could. The S-75 Dvina could only reach Mach 3 compared to the SR-71s Mach 3.3 and that's before you account for the altitude difference. Missiles that could catch the SR-71 came much later.

all the best designers are dead, when kelly johnson and his team were working on the sr71, most jets were stainless steel tubes with fricking wings bolted to them and a sharp cone for the nosecone
shit is fricking insane, it was a literal 100 year leap in design
the B1 too, it was from the same era and was equally impressive

Because we really weren't ready for Mach 3.3 in the 60s. The SR-71 pioneered a lot of technologies and was on the very edge of our ability to make. As a result it was finicky as hell and tended to spontaneously explode for no apparent reason. Usually turned out to be a fuel leak or weird effects of mach 3 on the air intakes but the fact remains that when the SR-71 was made our engineers were entirely out of their depth and even though they performed a miracle there was a price for that.

tl;dr Lockheed made a deal with the devil to get the SR-71 in the 60s and the price is that for every one we wouldn't loose to SAMs we'd loose to technical difficulties.

You realize we're probably 3 or 4 generations away from the SR71 and all of them are still classified, right?
Hell, Aurora is already old tech at this point. The only thing that has changed is your ability to know for certain what exists, because the tech has become so advanced that even the obsolete stuff is beyond what our enemies are capable of building.

      According to Ben Rich

Aurora was just the name randomly given to the B-2 funding. So depending on how you interpret it, it either never existed or is the B-2. Having said that, their probably os a classified spy plane developed in that period.

according to ben rich making a true sr-71 successor was beyond current technologies, if you're using a manned platform. the temperature problems were the main problem. coming up with a novel system to keep the pilot from boiling alive and not killing endurance is a challenge.

satellites have predicable orbits and everyone knows where they all are at all times. you can hide stuff from satellites.

And you can develop stuff that blinds satellites.
