Does this thing still make sense? Can it do anything that can't be done by a couple of F15s?

Does this thing still make sense? Can it do anything that can't be done by a couple of F15s?
I mean it exists and probably it makes sense to use up the remaining airframe life, but other than that I think it doesn't offer anything unique.

Larger payload capacity than a b-52 or spirit, qualified for more munitions than the others, faster reaction time

        neat. didn't know that.

Im 90% sure they have a dedicated crewman for the EW suite. It's pretty gnarly.

          >Bait
But he is right. B-52 has much much more range and for speed they have comparable cruise speeds M 0.8-0.9, B-1 can fly supersonic but only for like 1500km, it to little for that kind of plane, and M 1.3 ain't gonna save you from S-300 and Su-27. Against sophisticated enemy both would be using stand off weapons.

            Anonymous

B52 cruise speed is M6.8, B1 is M8.4. B52 does have a longer range but you're not doing the low level missions rhe bone is capable of, the buff is a pure missile truck now

Big one that often gets forgotten by strike eagle/F-35 fans: it can carry a frick-off huge protective jammer. We're talking "you physically cannot build a radar capable of getting a stable lock within 100 km without making said radar impractically large for a fighter" tier. You'll know it's there and roughly where it is, but not enough to actually shoot it down.

      neat. didn't know that.

        Anonymous

Yeah it's pretty neat. I'll be the first to say that the B-1B is kinda an abortion and the B-1A was cooler, but the jammer really is something that you can't get with an F-15E or whatever, you need an electronic warfare aircraft in support (at this point for USAF/USN it'll probably be an EA-37 for stand-off and EA-18G for stand-in) for those things.

        https://www.l3harris.com/all-capabilities/alq-161a-b-1b-countermeasure-system

        >The AN/ALQ-161A is a totally integrated radio frequency countermeasures system that is made up of over 108 Line-Replaceable Units, weighing over 5,000 lbs, consuming about 120 kW of power. The AN/ALQ-161A, which was initially delivered in the 1980’s, has been sustained through a series of OFP block cycle upgrades and hardware upgrades to incorporate modifications necessary to detect and counter the ever changing threat.

120 kW, even if a tiny bit of it actually gets radiated towards a threat, is fricking insane. I think the pods the EA-18G uses is like 10 kW, although using just kW to rate electronic warfare equipment is moronic as a lot more goes into it than just notional power draw. But you get the point. The B-1B has a lot more available power, space, crew, etc available for electronic warfare which is really important when your job is to get within a few hundred to thousand km of the target and drop stealthy cruise missiles.

I think the Growler has solid state antennas - it's not so much the power that counts but the power density per unit area, and the Growler is much better in that regard

EF-111 got an A-A kill on a mirage F1 in desert storm by frying the pilot at close range
they reported it as a maneuver kill cause it was Grey zone (might be classified as a blinding weapon)

the article just tells the story of a maneuver kill, there is zero proof, indication, or testimony that the the EF-111 fried the pilot of the mirage. the source for the EF-111 frying the mirage pilot is still your ass.

    That’s America’s fat girthy boner.
The backbone of our bombing strategy. Basically anything we don’t need a B2 for the bone can handle. Mine the strait? No problem. Have a factory that is not completely protected by SAMs and you need it to become a parking lot overnight?

So when the F-15s are doing your B-1 mission, they aren't doing something else.
    > should the balloon go up
    > all platforms will be needed
    > plus why not have F-15s in fighter role

Tu-160 is a longer range, faster, bigger, more expensive platform. It has some unique capabilities, the question is if they are relevant.

The Russian equivalent is the Tu22M

You'd need more than 10 F-15s and 9 tankers each way to compete with a single B-1's mission capability as the F-15s would be burdened with external tanks and jammers.

It can vary 84 500lbs jdams. That's enough ordinance to take out an entire airbase by itself. Can f15 can carry 12, so you would need to launch 7 f15s can match the b1

      Anonymous

      Look at it this way.
If there is a single issue that grounds the plane, or it gets restricted by a MEL item, then that's 84,500 lbs not delivered.
With the F-15s, if a plane has the same kind of problem, the rest of them go on ahead. Delivering most of the ordnance.

Point is moot anyway. B-1 has it's purpose, so do the F-15s.

Heavy bombers will always be needed for the US Air Force.
They are not the only thing in the arsenal, but they have their unique job to do.
    Pic very related.
