Does England Not Have Ceremonial Rifles ?

L85s for the King's crowning seems very low class. Where are the perfectly preserved 1853 Enfield's ? the SLRs ?
What are /k/'s thoughts on this ?

The weapons are loaded but not made ready.
The police are there because the army has no jurisdiction for dealing with any criminals - They're entitled to use deadly force to protect the monarch if necessary, but they can't arrest anyone - and the police act as another line of defence to prevent Johnny foreigner from getting trampled again, like in those video's we all know.

Ceremonial guns are autistic. They have a dress uniform, they don't need a dress gun and neither do any other regiments. Those uniforms reflect over 200 years of consistent history, picking one rifle to use just because it's "old" when they've always had their service rifles would be moronic. Would you look at a picture of one from the 20s and demand he carries a brown bess.

In fairness to OP, they did have specific accessories for ceremonial SLRs. White slings, white bayonet frogs, chromed bayonets. Don't think the guns themselves were anything special though.

It's not that they wouldn't use a white sling for the SA80 they just don't use any slings for ceremony because it's a quick adjust and would look weird.

it's dependent on the UK determined 'threat level'. If you go to any british armed forces base in the UK, near the gate you'll see a 'threat level' sign. Usually the label is black, reading 'Heightened'. There's four levels, the max being 'imminant'. Heightened is the third, I believe, the first is 'negligible', anything above and including 'heightened' involves anyone with a rifle on any form of guard in the UK to carry a minimum of 15 rounds.

it's been at heightened since the westminister attacks, so everyone's been carrying rounds in their weapon. Below 'heightened', ceremonial guards units don't carry rounds in the magazine but actual blokes on guard will have a magazine of live rounds on their persons somewhere

I'll tell you why we should have them. The manual of arms was built around guns that were a certain length and made of wood. Although it's been adapted, it's extremely difficult to perform certain manoeuvres with a polymer bullpup.
In particular when you slap your hand on the furniture when performing certain moves instead of a nice slap noise you get a dull thump. Drill sergeants though, STILL DEMAND YOU MAKE THAT FRICKING SLAP NOISE. Because it's in the fricking book. So recruits are even now beating their hands to shit on polymer furniture in a nearly futile attempt to make a noise that they will never be able to make.
Also the fricking magazine gets in the way.

Every part of the British military does guard duty around London at some point. Even foreign units from the Commonwealth do it sometimes
They're expected to do the same drills so it only makes sense to do it with a service rifle, not have some gaudy fricking chrome wall ornament

      Anonymous

That's not quite true. The Guards take the lead for the ceremonial stuff, but as they are genuine infantry battalions sometimes they just aren't available to do the ceremonial stuff. At which point other units (or even the RN) have sometimes filled in for them

        Anonymous

There is a rotation though ceremonial duties. Even the RAF have the Queens Colour Squadron for such duties. There are several Guard units though who all rotate though, so they are who you typically see, and they all look similar, so everyone thinks its the same unit. The unit in OP's pic are the Coldstream guards, not the Grenadier Guards for example.

Because, despite the silly hats, the Kings Guard isn't purely ceremonial. They do actually provide security for the monarch and their residences, even when they're on display for tourists. So they carry the same rifle for all their duties.

Which is why I say they should have custom L85s that are engraved or otherwise visually distinct from a normal L85. If I were royalty I'd want my guards to be equipped with the best we can afford but also look as regal as their position. Perhaps a different finish or handguard material. Maybe special longer bayonets as that would both help them in crowd control and be distinct from a normal infantry rifle

Amean they're a regular force but that's not their job when they're at royal residences besides in the very literal sense of telling people to back the frick of the railings. They don't get issued rounds and if you ever asked one they'll all say they've been told they might get them in super special circumstances that their mate Jim was in once. Closest you get to the guard regiments guarding the monarch is in the guard room. Police handle the day to day security.

Historical dress and cutting-edge weapons is the best combination, but they should have weapons as good-quality as their attire. Where are the wood-stocked L85s with burnished barrels and tasteful engravings?

Because the guards only spend 1/5th of their time doing ceremonial duties if their battalion is assigned to it. Familiarity with their main service rifle is an important factor in this as operational units. The queen’s designated pallbearers in the queen’s company 1st Grenadier Guards are in Iraq at the minute for example. God knows who actually ends up carrying her body.

It's not lowclass, it's meant to show that they're active duty soldiers and not just parade performers.
The 1853 Enfield was the cutting edge rifle of its time, and the SLR was the new cutting edge rifle of its time. Now the L85 represents the current era.

They don't wear combat fatigues for the same reason not all police are dressed like SWAT.

the 3rd is also a big part of the Washington command area and regularly deploys battalions overseas and to other parts of the US. Ceremonial and honor guards are one of their functions but they are actual soldiers.

If they don't get hit by a car first. Seriously, they all walk out of a side staff entrance that crosses a road with no pavement expecting vehicles to stop for them. Being hit by a car is the guards' leading cause of injury and death, which is fricking stupid for an active infantry unit.

Why Cantona brits just replace l85 with m4 already. Even the French swallowed their pride and are now using German guns

      Anonymous

Hard to justify the cost because the L85 good enough as it is and they've been downsizing since operation Herrick ended (most of the MRAP fleet is gone, for example). Some people clearly want it though, ARs are starting to bleed out into SOF-adjacent units like the Marine commandos and the new Ranger regiment, and SFSG and MPs have been using it for a decade. Nobody is going to authorize a whole new force-wide procurement, but individual units are able to sell the idea provided they're specialize enough.

Sunk cost fallacy. We were supposed to bin the L85 in 2015 but it was extended because BAE were already working on the L85A3 and we can't disappoint le heckin defence comperinos.

The US keeps m14's around for ceremonial purposes. A lot of countries no longer use guns with any wood, but wood guns are kept around for exactly that reason, they look classy. England wanted to only use one gun, and I think that reason is because those dudes are the actual palace guards. There are other dudes dressed differently around, but for the most part if you frick around at the palace thise dudes will come out dressed like that and frick back. They want them to have their actual fighting rifle, not something they aren't trained on or that's seen as less practical. Given that they operate half indoors, a bullpup is handy. They should come up with a wood kit for it though or have polished ones. They already look like easy to spot gays, might as well give them shiny rifles with wood kits.

    >Four Terrorists break into the palace. "What the devil?" As I grab my Bearskin hat and Brown Bess Musket.
    >Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot.
    >Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the Queen's Corgi.
    >I have to resort to the Blomfield cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "HIP HIP, HOORAY" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms.
    >Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion.
    >He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up.
    >Just as King George intended.

Since the UK is just a sad and sometimes ridiculous shadow of its former self the L85 is fitting. Just as pathetic as whats left from the former empire.
A country whose capital has about 65% inhabitants whose skin color is not the native one doesn't deserve better.
Pic related. The cradle of industrialization ddoesn't even have a locally built hearse but has to rely on a german car of all brands.

      >65%
Those are US numbers you fricking moron, the UK is statistically still very white despite all the pictures you see on /misc/. Especially out of the population centers. And Scotland is more than 95% white, the only place whiter than Scotland in Europe is Poland

The US tomb guards only have like 4 guys on duty at a time so issuing old rifles and anime pistols to seem more traditional is relatively simple and cheap.

To do the same for the guards would mean doing that for an entire brigade.

Yes the crushing expense of maintaining five thousand rifles that they already have in storage somewhere is too much for the small and impoverished nation of Britainm

the point is that its a different level of public spending. 5,000 rifles is enough where you would actually have to justify that it was in any way a worthwhile expense beyond "General Whingus doesn't like how modern rifles look on parade"
