iron sights are pointless if you have a decent optic

You will eventually kill a RDS on a reciprocating slide. I've killed several Holosuns around the 8k mark. I'm now working on a RMR to see if it can make it up and past 10k, but I have heard they tend to give out between 10-15k. If that happens, I guess it's on to an ACRO to see how long it will last.

So its the slide slamming back and forth that kills them?
Ive heard the AcroP1 is subject to the glass breaking. Supposedly fixed on P2.

If the irons are low and not sitting right on top of the dot, then sure. And no annoying shit like tritium or fiber optic fronts, that's annoying.

I am embarrassed for your inability to find a dot without crutch irons that completely defeat the purpose of the dot, which is never needing to shift your focal plane from the target

Honestly this. Cowitness only with folding iron sights, everything else is moronic.

Those dots blur out what you're aiming at, never understood you nerds and your call of duty sights. The gun comes with perfectly good sights.

Apparently you have no idea how to use them or you never have and think cameras accurately portray them. Or maybe you have an astigmatism and you should pour bleach in your eyes.

the point of the red dot is to have a quick sight were you can just aim the dot and pull the trigger quickly without lining up sights. Usually you dont want to cowitness red dots to sights but have them slightly above the sight in the middle of the picture. I dont know why people cowitness their red dots to sights because its completely moronic.

You can do the exact same thing with irons, its just takes practice. It shouldn't even require "lining up" the sights, you should snap to the correct picture with no adjustments. If your sights aren't immediately aligned when you aim the weapon, you need to practice.

          You're an absolute fricking moron.
I know you're just shitposting for (you)s, but there are genuine inbred idiots with these opinions and shitposting like this generates more of them.
Every single fricking competition shooter in IPSC uses red dots on their rifles (or variable scopes), pistols and fricking shotguns.

            >muh competition

Isn't real life dumb frick. You don't need a red dot to be proficient, accurate, or quick. People like you are just parroting your favorite gun tubers. Hell, you pussies probably don't even have guns, let alone shoot them.

          Anonymous

What you're talking about is literally just point shooting, and it only works at very close range. Granted that's the range you would use a pistol or even most guns in general in self defense, but that's not the point of a red dot or target focused shooting.

            Anonymous

I'm not talking about point shooting, I'm talking about being quick on sight acquisition. You know how you see a target at 30 yards and put your sights on it to shoot it? You practice that over and over until you can bring your gun up on target and hit with no pause.

I don't mind most sights but co-witness and closed iron annoy the frick out of me.

Why is this even worth arguing one way or the other? Assuming your irons and your dot are zeroed to the same PoI, by definition they will be co-witnessed?

What am I missing? Is it an argument how high the FSP sits in the RDS window?

  9. 1 year ago

No. I'd rather have a reflex/holographic with flip ups than having shit in the way of both.

Co-witnessing only matters if you're running any kind of AR-pattern with a fixed gas-block front sight.

Aside from sovl, larping, and aesthetics, I don't know why anyone in the year of our lord 2023 anyone would be using one unless they had to. In which case, I would say that if you've been given an optic mount at the height necessary for co-witness, then for the sake of comfort I feel like you'd need to. I also wouldn't use anything smaller than something along the lines of a Comp M2. The small the window on a micro red dot when co-witnessing with a fixed front sight is just going to make for a fricking tiny, rather busy viewing space that's going to be occupied in the center by the thick ass front sight base and post, the dot, minimal viewable glass, then the thick black of your T2 or similar smol boi red dot. I.E. pretty dogshit visibility. (For me, weirdly less-so with mini dots like the RMR, but that's subjective). I don't believe it would be tragic within 100 meters, but anything beyond, you *may* be better off turning off the dot and springing up your rear sight.

Otherwise, if you're just mounting your optic so as to have your BUIS in co-witness with your optic when upright, and then flipping both front and rear sights down, then I've always been told that's the thing to do, so that's what I do. I never understood lower/upper 1/3rd mounting on an AR if you have flip up sights.

tl;dr I believe co-witnessing is fine but only if you *must* or if you're just doing it for the lulz/looks.

For my full size handgun yes but only because I had the room and could get an acceptable lower 1/3 and indulge in a big luxurious optic. On my compact nah, same on my rifle. LPVO is touch enough.

whoops forgot picture. But mainly it's just autism, though since this optic is technically more fragile I feel there is a bit of extra actual justification.

lower 1/3rd is find but absolute cowitness is stupid. why yes i DO want to line up three different objects and then hover them over a fourth to aim.

For me it does. Personal preference. Neither is inherently right or wrong. Different choices.

Rifles: yes. I want the same cheek weld, so I need the same sighting line. Handguns aren't as affected by this due to not having a cheek weld and also having shorter reach.

    Yes. Always have backup irons.

On pistols, not really. Mostly because I don't have any pistols that are even capable of cowitness.
I'm a rifle, kind of. I'm going to engage with a rifle at further ranges than with a pistol, so having close range back ups is handy.

Why not just flip up sights?

Nope, so long as you understand not having absolute co-witness affects POI of impact shift at various distances.
