    hydraulic or mechanic
    my bet is on mechanic

pneumatic is too flexible to accurately control motion accurately under variing loads.

Mechanic seems unlikely as they are too slow and not flexible

Sex bot when? Just install a Fleshlight with squeeze settings, heating, and lubrication. Could even wrap it in fake skin.

Does your sexbot have to walk? Or just roll around in bed? Also are you ok with scooping out the loads from its holes after every session? Keep in mind this will reduce expenses tremendously.

Why is it so hard to make synthetic muscle fibers. Doesn't sound that complicated.

      >doesn't sound that complicated

Unfortunately, real muscle fiber IS complicated, and the best we can do so far is shitty mimicry of its function. Actually getting a robot to move is still best done with some combination of electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic devices.

it is quite easy though and was already achieved in different ways with different shape memory polymers that can be stacked up and whatnot, the problem is high costs for manufacturing and maintenance

        Anonymous

Form factor is the actual factor. If it were just cost and maintenance, people would be pushing through those problems. But we literally havent figured out how to create and form whatever artificial muscle compound to function on a robot like the bd one.

The fact that you can't pack a bunch of them together like muscle. Unless you also pack them with some kind of cooling (which complicates matters), you basically lose the ability to make them relax quickly when they're all packed together, generating heat and insulating each other.

Additionally, polymers in general have issues with creep. They tend to slowly deform over time in response to applied loads. This, by the way, is exacerbated by high temperatures. Even if they do maintain the internal stresses required to make them work the way they do over time (they don't), they wear out quickly in actual use.

This idea isn't new. It's just never gone anywhere because it kind of sucks in practice.

            Anonymous

A lot. For one, using heat to relax/contract is kind of dogshit. It just has too many problems. Figure out how to make a scaleable robotic muscle fiber actuated by electricity, and you’ll be a fricking billionaire.

Packed (yet electrically isolated) carbon nano tube strands potted silicone and applied high voltage for the repelling Coulomb force between individual strands would be strong and highly energy efficient.

https://www.bostondynamics.com/atlas says it's hydraulic. Quite impressive how they fit the hydraulic lines (you need two, feed and return for hydraulic actuation) and control wiring for all that into these narrow looking black nylon hoses. Also, these are its most vulnerable point. Sever them and you'll render everything downstream inoperable since there's not going to be any wiring inside joints. Stay clear of the lines by e.g. using the front third of your sword/rusty cleaver/chainsaw, especially when severing the major ones. Hydraulic lines are very high pressure and whiplash in a rather deadly manner when severed.
