yeah, we were taught that in the finnish army support shooter course this year.

the point was to look both ways after the target is down to check your squadmates situation and keep good situational awareness in general.

Bless all three of them, but that muzzle device looks askew. Is it because of the recoil pattern relative to the left/right handiness-of the person?

It's called the Kyle Check. It's to make sure your shooting buddy isn't wigging out.

why didnt Kyle do the Kyle Check at the gun range?

It's named after him because he invented it by negative example.

You do the Kyle Check so you don't end up like Chris Kyle.

It's called situational awareness, home boy. Guns are very loud and concussive. When you're shooting them it is easy to lose track of what is going on around you. When these guys check over their shoulder, they're not just looking for other threats, but also checking on their buddies who may have been injured during the fight. It's good practice. Try shooting guns sometime and you might understand the underlying principles.

No, I just explained what it is. It's good practice.

Situational awareness is maintained depending on the situation itself. Randomly swinging your head around after firing your rifle is not situational awareness.

You're not randomly swinging your head, you're looking behind your back. Do you just randomly swing your head when you do a shoulder check?

Nah. Situational awareness is fundamentally maintaining a 3D map of your environments and relevant things in it in your own mind. Where am I? Where are my allies? Where are enemies? What risks, dangers, cover, routes of egress and lines of sight are there? How am I situated in all of this?
It's a constant process that's supposed to be running in the back of your head at all times. Swinging your head around after shooting doesn't even contribute to that. The primary focus of your awareness should be at your front, where you just considered something worth shooting at, something to be a danger, so that is where your focus should be focused on. Look at the target and its surroundings, take cover to protect yourself from other angles if that's practical.
Practicing some retard-drill where you shoot a couple rounds and then look around as if the threat was somehow intrinsically neutralized is moronic, a blatant fucking LARP.

        >We intentionally trained him wrong... As a joke.

Randomly looking behind your back is randomly swinging your head.
Unless you have an actual situational reason for looking behind you, it IS random.

You paid for one of these courses, didn't you?

It just seems to me a lot of people have just watered it down into muscle memory with two half-assed shakes of the head without giving it any background thought.

I heard and instructor describe that as looking but not seeing.

if you are going to practice it, at least visually look for something like what colour the garbage can in the corner was and the skin colour of the guy down the far end of the line. doing the little dork head sweeps while not actually scanning for something is pointless.
