The ballistic knife is honesty a POS. The only reason it got any notoriety is because some American politician saw the film Commando (Schwarzenegger), and there is a scene where a ballistic knife is used. Being a typical ignorant politician, he thought that they are actually as dangerous as the film portrayed, and he campaigned to ban them.
The scene in question:
He threw the first two knives. With the third soldier, you can see him press a button with his thumb that shoots the knife. Its around 0:51-52. Watch closely.
Same with switchblades, brass knuckles, saps, etc. Movies make people panic.
The musical and film West Side Story was largely responsible for getting switchblades banned while Boomers weren't even old enough to vote.

Unironically California. Saps and a whole shitload of martial arts weapons are banned, but if you play your cards right in a mountain county near the Nevada border the local sheriff will give you a CCW for your DE.
no. the only vaguely relevant thing you'll ever see in any military's promo materials is this bullshit.

other than that, there's just the NRS gun knives, which are widely mischaracterised as "ballistic" because of stupid boomers. but i can't remember seeing the russians trot one of those out in footage shot this century.
Ballistic knifes are on the same level as shirtless training sessions of roided out "Special Forces" in front of cameras, circus-style jumps over burning obstacles while throwing axes and sledgehammering stones on the abs of a (also shirtless) soldier whos laying on the ground.
do militaries even issue knives in general anymore? when i was in the navy i had to buy my own "deck knife" and i've never heard of army people getting issued knives other than shitty multitools or individual units ordering cases of boxcutters and such as part of office supplies
Deadliest Warrior pitted one against an E-Tool in their Green Beret v. Spetnez episode. Whether or not it's complete bullshit they were ever actually issued is up to you to decide.

That was a ballistic knife used there? I always assumed he just threw the knife really weird and they did an awkward shot transition.
Looks like he just threw those knives. I do remember a ballistic knife being used in the punisher movie though

Oh I see it now. Boomers are unbelievably stupid
Very similar thing phenomenon with banning "ninja" weapons

If you're in a situation where you have to use a knife...

What do you think dipshit
Just because something is not used by a military doesn't mean it's automatically a meme.
That being said, yes, the ballistic knoife is very much a meme.

they barely have any force. you could fit an entire single shot gun in the handle of the knife and it would be more effective
I wouldn't trust one of those to go off by itself
