DIY Party Popper String Pulls

I've been looking for a day or so now and tried doing what I watched someone do with no luck. I want to make the little pull string igniters you find in party poppers like picrel.

I tried crushing up match heads and making a paste that I put on a string and small piece of paper and dryed it with a heat gun. I rolled it up and pulled with no result. Several attempts. I was hoping someone here would have some advice or experience with these.

And I know they're cheap and I could just buy some, but I like trying to make stuff and figured it'd be fun.

Only if you smell it as you pull the string.

I think the string is supposed to be "clean" and the paper tube wrapped around the string has the dried match heads. Perhaps a different type of string would generate more friction against the matches and thus more heat.
Also are you using "strike anywhere" matches and not safety matches?

Not strike anywhere. Just red wooden matches.

          what

regular matchheads are not shock sensitive unless mixed with the red phosphorus from the matchbox stripe. I hear people scrape the bits of phosphorus off to mix with the matchhead powder.

one could consider using silver fulminate(NOT fulminated silver!) as an alternative. Thats the explosive used in bang snap toys

          thank you

gunpowder is not friction sensitive. Wikipedia quotes that armstrongs mix is usually used

I think that's why I've seen other use armstrongs mix since it's the same as match heads almost.

More interested in using them as noise making trip wires for when camping, but I did have that thought.
