DIY Fixed Blades?

I'm trying to get my first good CC fixed blade, but I saw some of these picks being carried online. It seems like a decent idea, especially for a guy with an office job like me. My only qualm is that the price range is anywhere from $12 (cheap toothpick that would probably break if you poked a fat girl too hard with it) to several hundred dollars (paying as much as some people's rent for what amounts to a handcrafted kebab skewer).

I was thinking of just getting a ~6" eyehook and grinding the grooves off it, and then sharpening it with a grinder of some kind. What does /k/ think? Do I make the ghetto shiv? Do I buy the meme pick? or should I just stick with military LARPer knife?

What do you do in your daily life that might require that?

It's mostly just where I work. We have a terrible homeless problem, and they literally like to walk around attacking people with machetes. My work's front door is slow to open and obscures my vision when I walk out, and the homeless nutters love to hang out in our part of town. I've walked out and almost bumped into one a few times now, so I just want a fixed "blade," but I don't really even need it to be able to cut. If I get jumped by Machete Mitch, I'm getting as close as possible to him, so I just need something small I can stab with.

What the frick are you going to do with an ice pick?
It's an awful self defense tool. It's a shitty tool. You're probably going to have to explain yourself extra eloquently if you stab someone.
To answer your question, get some carol steel bar stock. Shape it how you want. Heat it until non-magnetic (that means a magnet doesn't stick to it.), Drop it in some used motor oil. Buff all the gross shit off. Put it in a 450F oven for a couple hours. Voila. You're gonna need to Google "quenching" , "tempering" etc related to the particular steel you use.
      >Scrap yard method
      Google "spark test metal identification"

      >You're probably going to have to explain yourself extra eloquently if you stab someone
Definitely a worry, but that can be said of any non-Swiss Army knife really.

So let me get this right. You've got a Glock 43x but instead of shooting a crackhead you'd rather poke them with a sharpened railroad spike?

the reason you carry a knife with a gun is as a retention weapon in case you don't have time to draw the gun; it gets them off you and gives you the time/space to draw.

at least if you carry a small fixed blade, it doubles as a useful tool. don't carry some huge moronic knife if you have a gun already. it doesn't need to be over 3.5" or so.

carrying an ice pick is the ultimate LARP because you are just carrying around this heart stabber/limb poker that 99.9%+ chance will never be useful to you in any way. at least a small knife can be used as a tool. also if you really are in some kind of insane grappling situation, they can grab your pick just like they can grab any shitty blunt weapon. meanwhile a small knife cannot be grabbed, is better at severing muscles/tendons, is better at severing arteries, can be dragged along someone's torso to open up huge wounds, etc.

drawing a gun is just as fast as drawing a knife what the frick are you talking about? you need to practice your draw if this is somehow untrue for (You).

okay dummy, i will elaborate. basically imagine a scenario where you are ambushed before you can even draw your gun. some guy has tackled you or is otherwise grappling with you already. drawing a knife in that situation is way better than drawing a gun, especially if the knife is staged conveniently. if you draw a gun it's very possible they will simply take it from you, grab the slide, etc. it may not even be possible to draw the gun from its carry positions if you are in that kind of situation. the knife is drawn much more easily and is much harder to disarm or control. as they feel themselves getting stuck they will often release or be forced to release any sort of grip they have and/or give up their advantageous grappling position, etc.

What rid they ambush you with? Because if they aren't an objective, immediate threat to your life you can't shoot or stab them.

how is getting stabbed by a knife a deterrent to some crazy crackhead homeless person who is high as a kite and cannot feel pain? let alone get the jump on you if you paid attention to your surroundings.

By cutting muscles and tendons you can disable use of a limb even if they can’t feel pain. Realistically though, most assailants can still feel pain. The idea of the knife as a retention weapon is not new or controversial, you’re just an idiot

get an actual knife so it's not completely useless unless you're stabbing someone. if you'll consider a folding knife you can pack more blade length in a smaller package, like a cold steel luzon or ti lite. if you want a fixed blade, get a cold steel spike. only recommending cold steel because price and blade length, but get whatever you like. a ring hook and pick set would probably be cheapest outside of buying a flat head and grinding it to a point or doing similar to an 8" bolt

so...maybe wrap the handle in some paracord or a leather strand. its not better than a knife of equal length....id really like to see the internal damage that happens with this vs a regular knife.

That is downright moronic, OP. If you walk around with that thing and get searched or do actually use it in a fight, you are absolutely fricked. "Uh, yeah, I was going to chip off some ice from the freezer in my car for a wienertail after work" will just draw the attention of police and whatever your version of the DA's office is. If you have a simple, legal fixed blade knife, not only can you actually cut (you know, in case throwing your whole body weight into a thrust might be a bad idea around a machete-wielding homeless guy), you can actually claim you need it for your job and just defended yourself.
