Except irons are so simple, they're the utmost basic fundamental to shooting. Batteries run out? Optic breaks? You have a back up. I mean you have reliable optics mounts, lights, and even suppressors now. Sure, but what most people don't consider is that a situation first has to get crazy enough for that difference to come into play in affecting the outcome for it to actually matter. Handgun vs long gun can certainly come into play if you haven't practiced much with a handgun due to long guns being easier to shoot, but otherwise the it's incredibly rare for situations you can encounter as a civilian to get crazy enough for your choice of gun to make a difference, and the shootings that do get crazy enough are generally police shootings that are outliers among police shootings and are far removed from what you might come across in a self defense shooting.

How many failures have you had with a decent AR?
Enough to prefer the AK. I've had one fairly minor failure with the AK but something is going on with my AR that I can't put my finger on. Had a really bad double feed not too long ago when I thought I'd need it that made me set it aside. I've never fired anything really high end, but I've shot a couple of mid-range ARs and just didn't like them. Some I've handled in stores were lightweight and seemed fairly handy, but the ones I've actually shot are surprisingly bulky and unergonomic. I will concede that it seems easier to be accurate with an AR mostly due to the sight situation, though. If I had to invest in a new combat rifle, I'd give the Galil a try since it seems to be a good blend of what I like about both platforms.

With the proper infrastructure, AKs are very cheap to produce (when not overvalued as they are now).
I enjoy the ergonomics and MoA of the weapon, the rules of the rifle make very simple sense which make it fun to shoot. Out of ammo? New mag, rack the bolt. Have a malfunction? Rack the bolt. Bullet not go bang? Rack the bolt.
Its simply a workhorse of a gun that doesnt really care if it's been left in the mud to rust or thrown in the back of a truck bed. It just works.
7.62x39 is a very good hole puncher, and that's all it really is. It punches 30 caliber holes in *mostly* anything that the sights land on. Accuracy is also perfectly adequate for a fighting rifle. Im not a long range shooter by any means, but I can ring steel all day at 150m+ with mine and that's all I really need it to do.
To suck this guns dick any longer will get me called a coper, so I'll wrap this up.

As a civilian there's almost no chance of winding up in a situation where the advantages of an AK, AR, or similar would make a difference in the outcome vs a shotgun, handgun, lever action rifle, or whatever other gun that you've practiced with. The idea that you'll ever be in a situation where the specific advantages of an AR over an AK or vice versa will have an effect on the outcome is full on moronic and signals to everyone that you get your firearm knowledge from video games, which blow the difference between specific guns completely out of proportion for gameplay reasons because most people wouldn't see the point in having tons of guns with near indiscernible differences when playing.

99% of the people who hate on the AK don't even know the M4A1s average MOA (I dare them to look it up) nor do they know that the AK can be fitted with rails and folding stocks as well. Something these tests never account for is how the guns actually feel. These usually aren't battle-hardened war veterans being tested, they're fresh off the shelf youngsters who've never seen mud before. They don't know what mud is, or what you're doing to them or why. You can't draw accurate conclusions from guns whose panic and choke up in an unfamiliar situation after having their trust broken. What you should be doing first is covering yourself in mud, to show them that it's not dangerous and give them reassurance that they'll be fine, only after doing this can you actually see how they really perform in mud when they're trying their best. Be sure to clean them thoroughly afterwards too, getting dirty with your guns and grooming them forms very strong emotional bonds very quickly. Gun husbandry is becoming lost knowledge more and more these days because competitive shooters are too secretive and new shooters are too dismissive of "superstitious fuddlore", and it's really heart-breaking to see guns being treated like simple tools when there's so much more to them.

Serious question.... I am looking to buy my first AK. I don't need anything fancy and would be happy with wood stocks. I do need it to be optics compatible because my eyes are getting old.
I already own an SKS and reload x39. Sidefolder would be cool but not strictly necessary. Looking for decent quality on a budget. Will mostly blast away with plinking ammo but would expect sub 2 MOA with reloads.

You can still find these in the price range of ZPAPs and WASRs, fairly unremarkable thing but is a good, basic AK
You have higher price names like WBP (which isn't a military arsenal if that matters to you, for some that's a deal breaker), FB Radom, Arsenal, and of course Saiga and Vepr
WASR for bare bones dependability at a good price, or pay a little more for a WBP Jack with a very nice fit & finish and equal reliability.

From what I’ve seen firsthand, I chose the AK. I’ve seen a variety of different AR’s fail without being abused at all. Meanwhile, you can pick up a WASR for $700-$800 and the only problem I’ve ever seen them have is canted sights which can be fixed if you aren’t a fayeget. Every import AK on the market will go bang reliably even if neglected. I’m not going off of what I heard, I’m going off of what I’ve seen. I don’t gain anything from your choice so go ahead and buy what makes you feel warm and fuzzy, the AK’s I own do the trick for me and haven’t had a single problem since I started buying them in 2013

The old school AK has more than a few points that shine brightly for the warfighter. Not least of which is the ammo can be found fairly easily no matter where you are except maybe Antarctica. Wherever there's people, 7.62X39 can usually be found, especially if any conflict has happened there in modern times or is soon expected. During conflict cases of it can be stumbled upon. If you have ammo in it and one in the chamber, 99.9999% it will spit lead every time you pull that trigger. Nobody has made anything that comes close to this reliability especially under duress. Now here's where it really shines: Close in MOUT and fighting from vehicle dismount with the shorty versions. Due to the caliber/casing shape/massive primer and caliber, it hardly loses any energy in shorter barrels. So it shines as a fighting from dismount weapon. You push it out with the strap for stability until you get the 1/4 second you need to snap the stock out. You quickly go from hapless ambushee to the other guys biggest mistake. But hey, you mall ninjas in pyjamas on a Saturday morning keep doing you.

The reality of the AK vs. M-16 in 'Nam is close to the legends but there is an actual truth: Yes, the M-16 was a pain in the ass over there especially when it first hit mass service. Yes, guys picked up AK's off of dead Charlie's. No, fricking nobody ditched their issues service weapons.. Because that would be a fricking crime for starters. The AK's were used essentially as back ups that you could get more ammo for by dropping asiatics. But unless you had something specific going on, you sure as frick were careful using it. Here's fricking why: Comms weren't exactly clear and stable, different units often couldn't get their shit together much less with different units. Night vision was rare and shit comparatively. Ok. So you start whacking at the V.C. you saw to your 3 o'clock.. other units saw hints of them as well.. You are firing with an AK.. It's dark, not everyone knows exactly where everyone is and they're tense.. WHAT THE FRICK DO YOU THINK HAPPENS NEXT MOTHERFRICKER? The other guys are gonna dump on your ass.
