Buy a chainsaw and go cut down some firewood and if you don't have a woodstove buy a barrel kit where you take a 55 gallon barrel and it puts a door and a vent on it with some legs, and then you'll have some heating for your home if you don't have time to get firewood get some pallets there's free pallets on craigslist all the time and use the pallet wood to heat your place. Also get some personal warm clothing like I've got some bibs that you wear for hunting and they're like sleeping bags on your legs and get some warm booties and a warm jacket and a warm beanie cap.

And if you wanna have a fire outside you can build something called a heat exchanger have as many barrels of water inside the home and pipe the water to the fire and heat the water up with the fire outside that will heat the water in the home in the barrels will radiate the heat this is how I heated the motorhome for two years.

Unironically, it’s after Christmas, and the middle of winter, buy a scuba suit on deep deep discount. I knew a guy who ran a snowplow business. Nothing keeps you warm and dry like a suba suit. You can wear clothes over it, it’s like military grad long Johns.

Save empty water jugs, they can be collapsed to save space. If water freezes, and things shut down or you can’t get out, you will need containers.

Arctic weather gear that is insulated for freezing temperatures is highly recommended.

Extra socks in case yours get wet.

Additionally, follow the rule of three for body heat clothing layers. 1. Should wick away moisture. 2. The middle layer should be highly insulated like wool. 3. Water/wind proof or resistant materials.

Learn exposure symptoms and treatments. Hypothermia disguises itself in its victims.

Comms, secure them. If you can’t, find a way to signal for help in case of emergency.

Stock up on common items like black tape, super glue, first aid stuff. Just things you might need.

Candles will heat up a room but you need air coming in or else you will suffocate.

Morale is always important. The psychology of survival is one of the most important things.

Learn to hunt/trap or stock up on food.

Always keep trash bags or plastic stuff to keep ur shit dry.

Try not to sweat during outdoors travel or freezing temp exposure.

    >Winter
    >power goes out
So water, shelter, food, etc. to survive.
Big thing is your pipes are gonna freeze and that sucks. You need water. I know your little filter works and you can eat snow, but not having frozen pipes is going to go a long way in quality of life. Have fun gathering snow or filtering dirty water enough to wash hands and clean stuff for you and your family. Too much time and energy (calories you need to store in your body) to be running around doing that. What you'll need to do is decide where you want your water to come from, preferably from center of your house that's away from outer walls (those freeze first). Turn of water to the pipes that go to outer walls and be sure to open the faucets to drain them. You can get by with just a bathroom sink but shoot for at least a shower/tub that you can bathe/clean stuff in. You should fill up whatever bathtubs and containers you have with water as an emergency resource. Stock up on bottled water as well.
Now, you have done your best to have water pipes that work, but you need to purify and keep those pipes warm..
    WOOD STOVE
Cook food, boil water, heat home. This is the thing that will save your life. While others are struggling to get by on snow and cuddling under blankets in the dark, you will have the luxury of heat. Keeps people happy, keeps calories in your body because you aren't shivering or tensing up in the cold.
A wood stove that keeps water pipes thawed is going to keep you alive for a long time, even without any food.

One thing people in the US and Canada need to come to grips with is that we will not have the same level of public service we have grown used to over the past 50 years.
That is my prepper advice. " Prepare to self rescue. No one is coming to help."
Police, Fire Departments, Emergency Medical Services, fricking snow plow operators have been decimated by the usual politics and CoVID politics . If for example, you have grown used to being able to drive on the New York State Thru Way because it has always been plowed even in the worst lake effect snow storms you may end up like the 20 people that died in their cars this past weekend.
I think a lot of people will die because they are slow to adapt to the fact that our court systems release violent criminals, our police have either quit or "quiet quit", the water company isn't keeping the water clean,,on and on.

          >Tell us the story please.
Nothing exciting, just the South being horrifically incompetent at anything snow or ice related. Even infrastructure workers and first responders got btfo from ice on roads. Even the AAA trucks weren't doing too well. I don't live there anymore and moved to the mountains. People are still moronic there, mainly because they come from California, Texas, or Central America. Not uncommon for them to freeze to death because planning for the future is too hard.

These days I prepare winterization kits. Each car gets a half gallon of methanol in sealed bottles, 20L Scepter can w/ shaker siphon and a screw on steel adapter cap, two sets of traction boards, tow hooks and ratchet straps, enough oversized winter clothes for anticipated number of occupants, chains, warmers, first aid kits, two sets of wrenches and socket wrenches each, aluminized picnic mats, etc. If I am stranded, I can pull myself out of trouble alone, and in relative comfort. Only costs a few hundred bucks per car, about a thousand with good chains and recovery equipment, which is incredibly affordable compared to getting btfo and demoralized that your last day would be freezing in a stuck and rapidly freezing car.

Can't convince my folks to do the same, as they've moved from the south to north where the Lake Effect is a thing. I just stash away shit in their cars while they're not looking, otherwise they just unpack it when they find it. They're starting to figure out they shouldn't do this.

              >That's an impressive list of take alongs.
I also happen to be a huge fan of vehicles with huge amounts of cargo space. Crossovers and the women who keep financing these objectively wrong choices can get fricked. Surprisingly enough that kit gets regularly used for other cars more often than it does for my own, or to patch up other people's frick ups.

I think of it this way. When I really did have no help, and no infrastructure, the list of what I wanted was... everything. Cars require a lot of stuff when they don't work, and so do people.

Besides, the days of good charity and stewardship from good samaritans are largely over, at least from what I used to remember as a child. People don't know how to take care of themselves anymore so they can't help even if they wanted, and the human shaped golems would probably loot you if they stopped anywhere near you. I'd prefer that they keep driving along to the next Foot Locker or Shart Mart to pilfer.

Awesome. That it was all swept under the rug even though they could have scored muh victimized Black points really makes ya think.

              >That it was all swept under the rug even though they could have scored muh victimized Black points really makes ya think.
It's something that people rediscover every so often, so I don't worry. People quickly discover, "Hey we can just shoot him."

Katrina guys learned that birdshot fricking sucks outdoors, and buckshot isn't that much better. Buy slugs and ball rounds for the groid. Turns out overpenetration is really nice since they're always in groups anyways. The appropriate loadout is closer to big game hunting than it is self-defense.

Electrical heating-tape that can be wrapped around water pipes. Any pipes that really freeze or get exposed to very cold temps (uninsulated garage), wrap them and plug'em in. Take the house all the way down to 46 degrees. Use heavy clothing and bedding to stay warm. It is, of course, a miserable existence and only to be done if you don't have access to a woodstove and fuel, but in a bad situation, it'll save your ass and your house.

The electric heat tape is a huge fire hazard. If you lose power in a storm it’s worthless anyway. If your pipes get condensation in the summer, you’re exposing yourself to danger. The nerf wrap alone is good enough.

Full camo heater suit. Preferably camo that matches your local area. Bonus points for sewing mylar to the inside of it to make you invisible to FLIR. Ghillie suit would work with layers under it. As far as essentials you need a way to filter water without access to utilities, such as a gravity filter. Then you need a means to protect/defend yourself.
