They weren't great, weren't terrible. Had a lot of innovative ideas that unfortunately didn't really pan out like the Pugliese torpedo defense. Worst part of the navy was indecisive leadership and some poor shell quality control

      Anonymous

The shell quality control is pretty massively overblown, an excuse used by certain influential figures like Iachino post-war to justify their own actions during specific engagements. More recent research is showing the extent of the exaggeration with regards to shell quality and gunnery during the war.

the italian navy was the best thing it had going for it. the royal navy mediterranean fleet was stretched thin with a lot of focus being put on home defence but it was still very powerful with a mix off carriers, battleships and battlecruisers and the regia marina was enough to contest it at some points.

If only they had pressed on even harder, especially when Germany was fricking with the British during their invasion of Greece. But no, the supermarina was an absolute embarrassment with little successes.

They weren't that bad, from what I know they had an issue with the powder bags not being consistent across manufacturers. This lead to dispersion/accuracy issues with their guns and many blaming the guns/ships as the problem.

the dispersion issues were quite notable as multiple British ships attest to the Italians finding the range very quickly but never being able to hit them

Honestly, the dispersion issues of the Regia Marina are kind of a meme honestly. Like yes, their guns were probably not top tier in terms of accuracy, but they weren't even the shotguns that youtubers like Drachinifel make them seem to be. In the cruisers the accuracy issues were mostly related to the use of single cradle twin turrets, which meant that the barrels were very close to each other: that issue however was solved rather quickly with the addition of delay coils. As for the Littorios, they only took part in four ship to ship engagements in the whole war, and they only displayed poor accuracy in one of those, that being the action off Gavdos, in which Vittorio veneto engaged British cruisers at very long ranges, and in which the British made effective use of smokescreen.

As a matter of fact in the Mediterranean naval engagements had a tendency to happen at significant longer ranges than in other theathers, which meant that in equal conditions both sides missed more shots than average: see for example the Battle of the Espero Convoy, were the British/Australian squadron had to fire 5000 shells in order to sink a single italian destroyer. The british of course had the advantage of Radar, which meant that if they wanted to close range at night they could do it, and that's what led to most british victories in the Med.

also keep in mind their destroyers and light cruisers had an insane range, and that was achieved with ridiculous amounts of propellant

This isn't confined to naval ammunition; a British examination of captured 6.5mm carcano ammunition found up to four different types of smokeless powder and mismatched primers used in the same batch, sometimes even within the same stripper clip.

They went to war with even less in the way of fuel supplies than Germany. Somehow, it never seemed to occur to the right people that the Royal Navy would cut them off from access to American oil.

They were great ships, just unequipped with radar which is what hurt them so much. They were also extremely comfortable for the most part, so the crews loved them. Venezia is a kinda unrealistic design, they probably wouldve opted for larger Zaras or else go full Ansaldo project (Napoli).

WG just cant balance shit. Look at CVs and subs lmao.

      Anonymous

Some anon here went on a rant, i don't have the screenshot anymore sadly, about how royally WG had fricked up with the italian designs. Specifically, the fact that italian ships base their damage on many inaccurate, small caliber guns, while supposedly italy intended to pursue the exact opposite, ie big bore accurate guns with long ranges but few in number. Whether this was a pipe dream or what they really wanted to do post ww2 is an another matter entirely

      Anonymous

I really don't get how weegee can frick their game up so bad. Back in 2016 they had an absolute golden formula for an arcade ship combat game. Artillery felt good to use, the three main surface combatants had a very good loose rock paper scissors dynamic, and it just felt good. Fast forward to today and the artillery is bugged, there's a million meme ships that break the dynamic, and WG is trying their hardest to push away the gunships in favor of gimmicks that circumvent this dynamic like subs, CVs, and the fricking D*tch.

        Anonymous

WG follows the tried and reliable formula
        >launch new ships in early access to make the dumb consoomers spend hundreds of bucks in what they could get for free if they wait one more month
        >make the grind an absolute pain and every ship of the line minus the very top tier worthless junk, in order to further galvanize frustrated players to give them gibs
        >every new entry is unbalanced, ships get progressively more and more powerful, because their way to attract customer is to promise them big unf OP stuff
        >cash in the seasonal pass, container loot boxes, holiday events
They think only in short time returns because either they don't care or know that their games are getting old and it's only a matter of time before they pull the plug, so they try to squeeze every last cent out of it.

          Anonymous

The sad part is that the age of a game doesn't matter so much these days. Games like War Thunder, despite being way older, are as popular as ever. Even World of Warships is only starting to flounder very recently despite WG's repeated attempts at crashing and burning the game. People still love that golden formula this game is built around, despite it being covered in mountains of poo. If they had literally any long term planning beyond wringing money from whales, this game could still have many good years ahead of it. As it stands now however, the end is undoubtedly closer than the beginning.

        Anonymous

Yup, and the player numbers are in free fall and the competitive scene is dead. I used to do clan battles and stuff, but now theres no point because its just so unfun to play the game when CVs and Subs are fricking it up.

Stupid homosexual devs killed the game I loved.

        Anonymous

Also the totally not tier 11 ships, which includes supercarriers, subs with homing torps that can turn 180 after your ass, health and speed of a destroyer (while underwater), making you also waste DCPs and frick up your positioning, while having countermeasures almost as bad as carrier countermeasures are.
Guess the poor optimization, bugs and latency are also worth bringing up, but decade old engine for racing games, please understand.

But anon, the Mk 48 firing super sub is only a tier 8.

Italy imo had some of the best ships of the war. Combination of lacking radar (which was such a new technolology at the time that you can't really hold it against them) and lacking fuel to be more engaging in the action is what really fricked them. Disparity in oil production altered the course of the war on every front drastically.
