It's a quasi blockade. During exercises the navy announces the range of their battle space and civilian ships are prevented from entering. China is essentially saying we could expand the scope of the exercises and cut off Taiwanese ports.

Cope for what? Chinese subs are worse than 1970s-era Soviet boats and never have I once seen anything suggesting that they are competent at ASW. The morons couldn't even build a diesel-electric boat without the engine asphyxiating the entire crew due to poor design.

No. A blockade is an officially recognized act of war.
Taiwan is not at war with China.

The most significant aspect of the Korean War is, once again, American wifflewaffling on how to handle the post-conflict politics, which is fricked up beyond repair by allowing North Korea to come into existence

                Anonymous

The issue with this is that North Korea was already in existence, the war didn't allow it to come into existence. All the Korean war did was insure the existence of south korea

He's infamous for being shitcanned because Truman and Euros didn't like him. He technically didn't do anything worth shitcanning (he did all orders to a tee, and stretched it but never violating anything) except not giving a shit what the president has to say with his Europe-First policies because he saw the communist Asian threat to be more pressing. He is quite literally the definition of "didn't do anything wrong."
                > The Joint Chiefs agreed that there was "little evidence that General MacArthur had ever failed to carry out a direct order of the Joint Chiefs, or acted in opposition to an order". "In point of fact", Bradley insisted, "MacArthur had stretched but not legally violated any JCS directives. He had violated the President's 6 December directive [not to make public statements on policy matters], relayed to him by the JCS, but this did not constitute violation of a JCS order."[368] Truman ordered MacArthur's relief by Ridgway, and the order went out on 10 April with Bradley's signature.

The Dragon lady is packed with some of the best spy gear you can get. They also use it as a high speed data relay between the F-35 and F-22 so the systems can talk to each other. I don't think it's going anywhere. Imagine each pod(and the nose) as a spy sat, but flying at 70kft. It's much cheaper, has longer on station time, and flexibility than the spy sats.

Trade has to go on. Taiwan will use its airspace and waters as it does everyday.

                This guy rebars.

The concrete supports the building, the rebar prevents the concrete from breaking apart. Even when the concrete cracks, the rebar holds the chunks together so that they don't fall out of alignment. Think of it as a composite like epoxy-plus-fiberglass.

Western sources are starting to say ~18 months until invasion. We all know how accurate the West was about Russia's intentions were in Ukraine.
Looks like war's coming. Not going to be at all easy for China. The longer the plan and buildup prior to invasion, the more they get noticed - If they just one day decide to go and try to surprise, it means they couldn't fully prepare. In any scenario it is going to be a bloody battle and it's going to go from zero to a hundred real fricking quick before any boots even try to hit the beaches. Imagine Jutland, The Battle of Britain, Pearl Harbor, and D-Day all happening at once. China needs to simultaneously win all of them to succeed.

                >Western sources are starting to say ~18 months until invasion. We all know how accurate the West was about Russia's intentions were in Ukraine.
At this point that just means China is planning, but then again they're ALWAYS "planning".

Western intel was reasonably accurate (but early) about Russia because Russia was visibly mobilizing and preparing. Not to mention that the CIA was apparently listening to every phone call that Russian generals were making to each other about it.

Still, wouldn't be surprising if Xi tries something before Biden gets voted out. Even better for China if the cackling prostitute has replaced Biden as "president" by then.

                >Western sources are starting to say ~18 months until invasion.
Enough time for Taiwan to get a nuke and drop them on China in case a buildup actually happens.

If things go hot then I expect a very quick Chinese bombardment. One which causes a lot of damage and deaths, but does not suppress defenses. From that point the Chinese will begin taking heavy naval losses and any invasion force will have a bad time. And that's all within the first few hours, it only goes worse for China when other nations go "What the hell is wrong with you?" and mobilizes. With what happened to Putin in Ukraine, it would take a special kind of idiot to start a shooting war in the Pacific.

No, but they're practicing for when they blockade Taiwan.

Honestly I think people are being too dismissive of the the Chinese response to Pelosi's visit. While it was definitely humiliating that they weren't able to stop Pelosi from visiting, and ordinary Chinese are currently seething at the CCP, the response is still unprecedented.

The live fire areas in red on the map in pic related are all right by major Taiwanese ports. Just compare them to where the live fire exercises were in 1996.This really is a practice run for blockading Taiwan, which is something they've never seriously drilled for before. It's also the first time the live fire areas are all across the median line and within Taiwan's territorial waters. So it'll probably set a precedent where the PLA will now completely disregard's Taiwan's territorial waters, like they do in the South China Sea towards other nations.

It's all show and understandbly too. At least wait a few years until they build all those oil and gas pipeline through pakistan and russia to secure their economy before you think they'll declare war to conquer taiwan.
If anything they'll subdue the island by infiltrating the governement and having a majority vote from the population to join the mainland peacefully, lol.
I know this board is very american centric, but man this is dumb premise day after day is getting stale.

These threads are like a pro-Russian Telegram channel, except instead of seething obsessively about America, it's Americans seething obsessively about China. It's a mix of existential fear and insecurity. Russians know they're inferior to America, and Americans know they're inferior to the Chinese. These threads, like vatBlack person "USA bad" threads, exist as copium. That's literally it. It's just a way to deal with your fears and anxieties.

Korea is the ONE conflict involving the US over the last 100 years in which it can be said the US did not win. It was a stalemate — comically in favor of the US, but still a stalemate. It’s the one war the 3rd-world brown and yellow diaspora have to cling to when desperately coping over America’s super dominance in war.

Wrong. Things have changed. Covid is exposing the party for being incompetent. They are still trying to quarantine people and there are protests/riots all over the place.

Now add the Evergrande crisis, where an entire generation of young professionals already paid for a house and that money is gone.

Now add Xi trying to change the "rules" by essentially removing the 2 term/10 year limit on being the PM and making himself the defacto Supreme Leader of China.

China is running out of time, and has a ticking time bomb in the form of a surplus of 100 million me to women.

China isnt waiting till 2049 and youd be an idiot to think so. China will go for Taiwan within the decade.

I don't know if you guys noticed, but Taiwan imports (much) more of its food than China does.

I'd thought it was only about 33% but that chart says 50%-75%. That may be because Taiwan exports a lot of food also, so 33% would be the net.

Keep in mind the island has been fortifying for decades. Even if some defenses are older, they work.
Now is the time for the Taiwanese to practice how they will fight. Endure heavy initial bombardment, disperse concentrations of forces, have a way to quickly rally and respond. Much like the Ukrainians did.

Doubtful. They know they need a better nuclear deterrent which is why they're going all-out on increasing their arsenal. They'll need a few years to crank themselves up to 1000 warheads. At that point they'll have convincing MAD and their conventional forces will be freed.

I dunno. If there's one thing different between chinks and Vatniks it's that China can bide its time, try to covertly choke it's opposition and be so integral to other countries that the concept of a world without them is harder to swallow than a world at peace. Russia also has to contend with demographic collapse, crippling brain drain and economic stagnation. China will probably run into all these problems in the future but they have a good chance of figuring out some rational plan rather than chimping out and invading it's neighbour. They also (possibly) won't feed their people into a meat grinder like they could in the old days. Even if they did do it . Chips are valuable, and we can afford to sanction Russia forever, not China.

They're overcounts/fake numbers the Chinese used to pad their numbers trying to hide their falling population numbers

        >Russia also has to contend with demographic collapse, crippling brain drain and economic stagnation. China will probably run into all these problems in the future
They're running into them already. The Chinese real estate sector is imploding, millions of citizens are already refusing to pay their mortgages for properties that have ceased construction, banks are failing, and corruption is making it all worse. As far as the demographic collapse, do you remember that leak of one billion police records a month or so back? The hacker posted a quarter of a million random records online as a free sample, and they show that China is already in population decline. Zeihan remarked that the leaked data shows that things are even worse than his worst-case estimate.

        >China can bide its time
Not really. The yellow bars don't exist.

Yep, that was Zeihan's "worst case" chart. And the Shanghai police data leak shows that the birth rate has been falsified significantly more than even that. IIRC it was about a 30% shortfall below his worst-case estimate.

China already blew its chance to gradually/peacefully takeover. Their harsh words and treatment of places like Hong Kong showed what the reality of CCP rule would be.
No one wants to live under that. And even if many are reluctant to fight, when facing actual war (and no way to get off the island) then I think you would see many take up arms.
