Despite being nearly 50 years old the stinger has performed incredibly well in Ukraine. Is the proliferation of MANPADS In Ukraine why there is no longer an air war in Ukraine?

It was just a really well built system. The longer ranges SAMs are what’s keeping the air war away

so where were they when the KF-52 was blasting leopards apart?

No a mine disabled one while a Ka-52 was in the air causing Bradley crews to panic. Meanwhile about 1/3 of Ka-52s have been destroyed. Compare this with 6 destroyed leopards of about 71 fielded.

Why do russiand always try to spread lies like this? There were Leo2s that were damaged by mines but there is zero evidence of Ka-52 "blasting" them apart.I still remember the spam threads about mines and how they stopped the offensive. But now? They all suddenly change their narrative and claim that it was done by helicopters.

A lot of older Stinger variants only have 4.6 km range, the Vikhr missile has 10-12 km range.

Most weapons in use are "50 years old" designs if you go by introduction date. M1 and Leo 2 are closing on the 50 year old mark but that doesn't mean development stopped and coincidentally they're about as old as the stinger.

    They're still produced.

No, there's no air war because Ukraine has no air frames and russia can't perform SEAD or complex air operations due to being incompetent.

Migty puccia destroyed all of them on feb24, right sweetie?

If you want to argue that a squadron of MiG-29s and another of Su-24/25s and no SEAD munitions is enough to conduct complex air operations, be my guest.

They have NATO training so, yeah, odds ate pretty good that they can.

I mean, there's really no air war going on.

Sure Ukraine has some dispersed elements that it uses very, very carefully and Russia does do air strikes against air defence assets but in general, Ukraine has no airforce and Russia can't SEAD.
Anon is being hyperbolic but is largely correct.

Ukraine didn’t have much of an airforce at the start of the war and the donated old soviet stuff isn’t enough to make it big and strong. Just contesting the airspace is a huge achievement for a country like Ukraine

If the US had to fly rotary/CAS aviation with the number of MANPADS in Ukraine right now, they’d probably have to alter their air doctrine.
There’s been thousands of systems donated to Ukraine, and it has made the air environment extraordinarily lethal.

manpads are cool and all but to deny area size of ukraine you need a little more range than they can provide

That, but also the fact that neither side can into SEAD properly

Why hasn’t the starstreak shared the same level of success as stingers and IGLAs in Ukraine? There was so much hype when they announced starstreak in Ukraine and then nothing for the next 2 years

starstreak doesn't trigger laser warning receivers (which are not missile approach warning systems)

Starstreak doesn;t rely on high energy reflection off the target like an ATGM, it uses low energy and the missile looks backwards. the grid is also projected around the target for exactly this reason.

Not that it makes a blind bit of difference when you're moving at near hypersonic speeds with three individually guided darts and no countermeasures can stop you.

It shits on stinger (sorry didn't want to trigger one of your fettishes)

It's expensive and not many countries need a SHORAD system to protect armoured battle groups from attack aircraft and gunships who won't be making their own.

Indonesia has leopards and scorpions, South Africa has always had an armoured force. Malaysia uses PT-91 and ACV-300, Thailand has the largest mixed tank force of the lot of them. And singapore is a city state who probably bought it for it's high speed and low collateral damage - the same reason it was deployed to the 2012 Olympics.

No, what stopped air war is proliferation of glide bombs, so russians dont even need to enter ukrainian airspace to drop FAB 500 on their assess.

You realize MANPADS are smol. It's a vital part of the whole "MANP" thing.
They only have enough missile juice to reach things that are relatively low, slow, and nearby.
If you had a million MANPADs ready to fire directly upwards on every square mile of your country, then your mother would never lack for bedroom toys but you could barely menace passenger jets.

The actual full-sized anti-air systems, inherited from the soviets by both sides or donated to Ukraine, are what shuts down the airspace.
Most of the MANPAD kills in this war have been against targets hugging the ground to evade those systems.
Which illustrates why they're an important defensive layer, but you don't win an air war with just MANPADs.
