Could the sacred band of thebes work in modern times?

>The Sacred Band of Thebes was a troop of select soldiers, consisting of 150 pairs of male lovers which formed the elite force of the Theban army in the 4th century BC.

Would it be feasible to try this again? or is the concept of love so removed from that era that its not worth it?

Phillip came down into Greece proper with his invention of "a really long spear" and tactics beyond the Greek imagination like "cavalry supports the infantry" and "sime guys can carry other weapons". Macedonian tactics is what ended the Greek phalanx as military formation.

9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.

10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:

11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

A mental illness is any behavior that the group a person is in agrees is not "normal behavior". I.e. the majority decides what is and what isn't insanity.

            Anonymous

            >A mental illness is any behavior that the group a person is in agrees is not "normal behavior"
So considering only about 2% of the population is gay that does indeed make it a mental illness, glad we agree on that.

I know you're acting in bad faith, but I'll try once again: the modern world has decided that homosexuality is no longer a mental illness, so it no longer is. Because nobody cares anymore. (That is: nobody meaningful)

Male homosexuality is a by-product of genes that enable women to be more fertile. When those genes get passed to males, they do nothing but make them more estrogenic and gay. Male homosexuals can be safely removed from society since they do not serve a use.

Are there seriously historically illiterate /misc/tards ITT that are denying the widespread homosexuality of Ancient Greece?
Homosexuality was a central aspect of Greek culture, and for political reasons there are morons that claim without evidence that it never existed or was just "mistranslated". This cope is seriously almost on the level of denying the dinosaurs.

Most reasonable take. Plato in his later years turned on it and along with Xenophon led a line of Laconophile Athenians who loathed male on male relations and democracy. But there were also plenty of philosophers who supported it, Socrates being the best example and probably early Platoas a result. Besides, acceptable relationships were basically just getting jacked off my hand or thighs, penetrative sex, while it did occur, was scandalous.

        Anonymous

The fact that you posted that nonsense proves you haven't even tried to learn anything about Greek history, but I'll respond for the sake of those who are just mislead and believe your infograph.
And no, opposition did not actually exist.

        >Plato
He wrote an entire book (The Symposium) about the virtues of having sex with young boys. It's seriously his second most well known book. How the frick do you people not know about this?
        >Xenophon
In the Anabasis he mentions his own lust towards young boys he spots on his march back. Along with other references
        >Alexander
Countless sources recount his sexual relations with a male prostitute called Baogos. In his harem it's specifically mentioned that it contained men as well.
        >Arisophanes
Never criticised homosexuality, just lightly mocked passives.
        >Aeschines
He was talking about prostitution, this has nothing to do with homosexuality. It the whole source he makes it very clear.

The image was made by someone who did research and knew full well the truth, yet decided to intentionally spread misinformation for his own agenda and counted on historically illiterate /misc/tards to keep promoting it.

Plato also changes his mind in The Republic, you're being a bit disingenuous yourself. Opinions can change.

            Anonymous

Even so, it was far, far from the mainstream of Greek opinion. The Republic was one of the most radical books ever written and promoted ideas that were in complete contradiction to established Greek customs and morals.
His supposed support for banning homosexuality just proves that it was widespread custom, just like how Plato also supported abolishing the family and polytheism, and supported gender equality.
It's also really more of a thought experiment than anything else.

              Anonymous

There's no positive source for homosexuality in Greece. His thought experiment was about the optimization of man which included the elimination of all vice such as sodomy. The average view of homosexuality in ancient greece was negative, old men who lusted after younger boys were considered perverts and there's plenty a joke from plays out having to chase old creepy men out of gymnasiums populated by younger men.

Imagine believing that you have a real connection with people from 2000 years ago just because you were born in a similar piece of geography.
The cultures have changed so much that there are no similarities between you and your ancestors, there is also no oral knowledge passed down and everything you know is transmitted from historians, so you know only as much about ancient Greece as any other non-Greek.
A historian from Britain or the US who specialises in antiquity, or even an amateur historian has more right to talk about ancient Greece than you.
