I know what's gonna happen anon. You won't decide to get one until summer really hits and gets swinging and by then they'll ALL BE GONE

This is why I buy my winter shit in late summer. By the time the mornings are getting chilly all that's left are pink scarves and XXL coats.

Thanks for the nudge, convinced me to go ahead and pull the trigger on a slightly nicer sit-on-top fisher for ~450 Americano. That's about a hundred bucks less than I saw he model going for last year- I assume they spooled up production like crazy when everybody went apeshit for outdoor gear/hobbies during COVID and they are now trying to unload.

I think they make 90% of their money off suburban moms who see them, get excited about the prospect of being adventure mom, buy one, then let it rot under the deck.
When I lived in suburbia every other house had one under the deck with the same idea.
    Paddleboards too.

Costco makes no money in sales. They sell at maximum 15% margin which covers overhead. Where they make money is the memberships and credit cards and vendors. The vendor items in costco are paid for by those companies essentially as advertisement. They count the ins and outs to claim foot traffic and vendors pay costco to display their items because customers who see something that doesn't say "kirkland signature" think "oh ok this is a name brand item." It is a means to grow brand recognition and trust in the quality. When an item is marked down over 25% like this it is a loss lead to drive more foot traffic to get more vendors to pay for real estate. Kind of like a trade conference booth model. This kayak is being sold at a loss.

        Anonymous

As a loss leader, they do make serious bank in sales, but only on the overpriced generics that sit next to the discounted brands. It's the combo theory where the hot dog is sold near cost and the markup is on the fries and drink.

I don't think it's possible to make them go pop, but I took my brother's Challenger K2 onto the lake last week and it already got a puncture after its first outing. I don't think this happened in the water, btw, but probably when it dragged on the pebble beach or when I propped it up on its side to install/remove the keel.

        Tl;dr: they are very fragile.

Are these pakayaks a marketing gimmick? I had to sell my last kayak cuz I move a lot and also have a home gym in my garage so space is limited and moving sucks (7 times in 3 years). This shit would probably fit in the trunk of my hatch.

I want to get into kayak camping and maybe hit some rapids. My last kayak was just a $500 recreational one and I was sort of outgrowing it as a paddler.

The other thing I looked at was a eddyline skylark, which is lighter but will sink in rapids. And cost is similar considering I would have to get new roof rack mounts,
