it's not the locating, it's the denial of services. Of fricking course your Baofeng is 'trackable', but the feds don't like encrypted messages over any of those freqs. At least with digital stuff like goTenna you can be encrypted

Using encrypted comms make you easier to pick out as someone who's up to no good unless you're on a band where the general public is supposed to be using encryption. The government maintains databases of who is licensed for encryption, what frequencies they're licensed to operate on, and what areas those users operate in. For any digital mode that supports encryption, any receiver can automatically detect if encryption is being used because no one likes hearing annoying noises playing over their radio, at which point it's trivial to automate checking if someone is even licensed to use encryption on that frequency locally. With direction finding, it can easily be taken further by comparing where the signal is being transmitted from to where the users of that frequency might normally transmit from.

I'm not encrypting unless I'm also frequency hopping super fricking fast across most of the spectrum. We can hear each other crystal clear even if you blast the whole spectrum with an ALQ hanging from a pylon. We're also impossible to even detect since we don't transmit on any one frequency for more than a couple of milliseconds. Well, we're not detectable by anyone we'd chose to mostly ignore anyways. We always operate assuming a near peer threat is nearby.
It's an Ad-hoc, mesh based system, meaning all data can be transferred between units without a backbone (cellular, etc). As long as you are in range of a 2nd unit, you can transmit data (voice over IP or whatever) with that unit. Additionally, since each unit is a mesh radio, range is extended with each one. System is based on reflashed Rocket acess points that anyone can buy and reflash for less than 100 bones. All wiring, antennae, and power sources can be bought off the shelf from Amazon for for cheaper if you chose the non milpsec route.
I managed to source actual MPU5 antennae for my build (2nd one shows up on Friday), but you can use a wide range of cheapo 2.5./5ghz antennae if you want

I made a few deviations with mine. Aside from the milpsec antennae, I use a 12v to BB2590/2557 adapter along with 2557/2590 batteries for a hardened power source. Both batteries will simultaneously quick charge the phone while connected. Both of these changes add several hundred dollars to the build

You should be able to. Since all units are on the same network when connected, you should be able to use any VOIP app to talk to one another. I am panning on getting a PTT and testing when they come back in stock. The Discus would basically act like an MPU5 PTT system (without the insane price tag). You could have one PTT one one side connected to a standard radio dedicated to conventional voice, and a Discus PTT for talking over the network with other units

Personally I’ve set up a fairly localized MANET with my family and friends who all have preflashed and set up LoRa boards. In the event of a grid collapse or cell towers going down we can text and send our locations as GPS pings. For the tactically inclined among us we can use ATAK to mark offline maps. E.g. my buddy can mark a geocache where he left supplies for us or I could ping a meeting place for my dad.
So using this system you connect your headset to the phone and communicate over a voip app? If so how would one go about connecting say comtacs? Bluetooth adapter of some kind?
It's for data transmission, like sharing location, texting, sending files etc
If you wanted to use Comtacs, I'd recommend getting a disco 32 Discus PTT and connecting the headset to that and talking over VOIP through your established connection between the mesh radios.

Can you seriously not imagine any scenario where power/centralized communication goes down for a significant amount of time and you need to coordinate with people you trust to stay safe? I'm literally a DoE glonig who works in the RF/ELINT end of things, I'm honestly not particularly worried about it, there's not really a lot of scenarios where things would get so bad that the military would drop bombs on every domestic 2.4/5GHz signal it hears while still having the capability to do so. The military will fight itself long before it fights anyone else.

In situations crazy enough where software that was first developed for the military 12 years ago would offer a significant advantage over a basic radio and a GPS? Frick no. The number of friction-fit adapters and connectors in these worries me. Way too many points of failure. It'd be a pain in the ass but making a custom wiring harness seems like a good idea.

I keep everything wrapped up with One Wrap and shoved in between my AVS plate bag and harness (forget that it's there). The only thing I've had fail so far was the Ethernet port on the Rocket APs. Both immediately broke right out of the box, so something is needed to keep the Ethernet cable plugged into the APs. Easy fix

This is why military comms use randomly generated keys and key loaders.The user himself never even sees the key.As long as the key is deleted before the device is captured everything is ok.
In WW2 SOE started using single-use double transpostion keys and one time pads,both of which were destroyed immediately after encrypting a message, because their agents were often tortured into revealing their long term keys.

It's an app, but it's really more of a frame work to build an entire comms/data system off of, it's very powerful/flexible but like anything you get out what you put into it. If the rest of your squad doesn't understand the value of something like this teaching them will be an uphill battle, better to find a new crew IMHO. My crew is basically a bunch of well-funded geeks who love guns, are interested in learning squad tactics and recognize the danger we're all in.
You can also do cool shit like overlaying floorplans of a building on sat footage, marking waypoints, integrating drones

What's your opinion on using USRP B200mini with some tiny laptop as a homemade e lint setup. 70 MHz to 6 GHz is a wide range which makes me believe you would have to keep few antennas with just to use it. and the radio is not cheap, but it powers of USB.

LoRa mesh is arguably a better solution to digital comms than AREDN. You really don't need the baud rate of a 5ghz device and you're severely limiting your range with that frequency at the power you can provide with 12v.

It’s fun, it’s for comms in the woods people can’t listen in to (like over a ham freq) overrelatively short distances. Plus, it’s easily adaptable for FPV drone flying. Look up MAD; people are using MANETs for drone fleets/ smart packet delivery when you include onboard temp data storage
Meshtastic takes a bit of setting up and troubleshooting to get going but especially with the ATAK forwarder plug in it's great as integrated into ATAK or as a stand alone MANET system with hardware that costs 1/4 of what that Rocket access point does.

Thus I need three formats to be turned into a single male lightning. USB C passthrough power, RJ45, and 3.5mm with POC capability. Of course I cooooould use a qi for charging but that is dumb. In the middle of that is a flighthelmet adapter because impedance.
