what is the use case for this as opposed to just using a cellular network for connectivity? is this in case of a compromised or damaged cellular infrastructure? can you communicate with these? i don't know what this is, explain to me the utility of this to me like a 5 year old

also, what's easier? locating someone on your super secret radio frequency that you and your buddies use exclusively, or using a cell network that thousands of others are using at once?

it's not the locating, it's the denial of services. Of fricking course your Baofeng is 'trackable', but the feds don't like encrypted messages over any of those freqs. At least with digital stuff like goTenna you can be encrypted

          >encrypted comms
Using encrypted comms make you easier to pick out as someone who's up to no good unless you're on a band where the general public is supposed to be using encryption. The government maintains databases of who is licensed for encryption, what frequencies they're licensed to operate on, and what areas those users operate in. For any digital mode that supports encryption, any receiver can automatically detect if encryption is being used because no one likes hearing annoying noises playing over their radio, at which point it's trivial to automate checking if someone is even licensed to use encryption on that frequency locally. With direction finding, it can easily be taken further by comparing where the signal is being transmitted from to where the users of that frequency might normally transmit from.

I'm not encrypting unless I'm also frequency hopping super fricking fast across most of the spectrum. We can hear each other crystal clear even if you blast the whole spectrum with an ALQ hanging from a pylon. We're also impossible to even detect since we don't transmit on any one frequency for more than a couple of milliseconds. Well, we're not detectable by anyone we'd chose to mostly ignore anyways. We always operate assuming a near peer threat is nearby.

It's an Ad-hoc, mesh based system, meaning all data can be transferred between units without a backbone (cellular, etc). As long as you are in range of a 2nd unit, you can transmit data (voice over IP or whatever) with that unit. Additionally, since each unit is a mesh radio, range is extended with each one. System is based on reflashed Rocket acess points that anyone can buy and reflash for less than 100 bones. All wiring, antennae, and power sources can be bought off the shelf from Amazon for for cheaper if you chose the non milpsec route.

I managed to source actual MPU5 antennae for my build (2nd one shows up on Friday), but you can use a wide range of cheapo 2.5./5ghz antennae if you want

2.4/ 5/ 900.....your choice depending on the unit you buy. 900mhz Rocket M9 APs are EXTREMELY expensive due to how sought after they are for rural internet setups

Yeah, but I know you can FOSS like a mofo on 900Mhz because older motorolas used to do it to get around congestion. Dunno about 2.4/5, but their so short range and congested, nobody probably cares anyway.

I made a few deviations with mine. Aside from the milpsec antennae, I use a 12v to BB2590/2557 adapter along with 2557/2590 batteries for a hardened power source. • 2 years ago

You should be able to. Since all units are on the same network when connected, you should be able to use any VOIP app to talk to one another. I am panning on getting a PTT and testing when they come back in stock. The Discus would basically act like an MPU5 PTT system (without the insane price tag). You could have one PTT one one side connected to a standard radio dedicated to conventional voice, and a Discus PTT for talking over the network with other units

Personally I’ve set up a fairly localized MANET with my family and friends who all have preflashed and set up LoRa boards. In the event of a grid collapse or cell towers going down we can text and send our locations as GPS pings. For the tactically inclined among us we can use ATAK to mark offline maps. E.g. my buddy can mark a geocache where he left supplies for us or I could ping a meeting place for my dad.

So using this system you connect your headset to the phone and communicate over a voip app? If so how would one go about connecting say comtacs? Bluetooth adapter of some kind?

It's for data transmission, like sharing location, texting, sending files etc

If you wanted to use Comtacs, I'd recommend getting a disco 32 Discus PTT and connecting the headset to that and talking over VOIP through your established connection between the mesh radios.

LoRa mesh is arguably a better solution to digital comms than AREDN. You really don't need the baud rate of a 5ghz device and you're severely limiting your range with that frequency at the power you can provide with 12v.

I'll probably try out 2.4ghz after messing with these used 5ghz units I got.

Can you seriously not imagine any scenario where power/centralized communication goes down for a significant amount of time and you need to coordinate with people you trust to stay safe? I'm literally a DoE glonig who works in the RF/ELINT end of things, I'm honestly not particularly worried about it, there's not really a lot of scenarios where things would get so bad that the military would drop bombs on every domestic 2.4/5GHz signal it hears while still having the capability to do so. The military will fight itself long before it fights anyone else.

                >and you need to coordinate with people you trust to stay safe
Over basic radios? Sure, there are tons of examples of people doing that. In situations crazy enough where software that was first developed for the military 12 years ago would offer a significant advantage over a basic radio and a GPS? Frick no. The US military's use case of kicking the shit out of third worlders who could never hope to afford what a single US soldier is kitted out with let alone significantly counter it is completely different from the use case of anyone in the US.

                >that the military would drop bombs on every domestic 2.4/5GHz signal it hears
Because the only possibilities are calling in drone strikes or ignoring it entirely.

Yes. Barring stupid shit we don't know about at the NSA like way, WAY faster processors anyway. But if you transmit TS, it must be on AES-256. Or it was a few years ago.

        >like way, WAY faster processors anyway.
Anon, did you forget that supercomputers exist, and that there are tons of them? It wouldn't just be some top secret processor, it would need to be a top secret supercomputer built with tons of top secret processors that would be extremely difficult to hide.

Brother, go look up the key size for AES-256, and go look at the projected (because the machine doesn't exist yet that can do it) analysis for the complexity of a related key attack. That's not just a hot shit super computer.

Even if you believe the NSA is running something fast enough to project all future protein folds and cure cancer, and they're only using it to spy on dipshit 4chins farting into mics, the US still using it for TS/SCI means we remain convinced no one outside the NSA has a machine that can do so.

Wrong question. If you draw the Eye of Sauron to your person, the better question is how much will you put up with before you just give them your key? Local sheriffs deputies would put unruly drunks in the tank with violent longer term guys with a history of mental illness and Hep C. How many perforation risks are you willing to risk to not hand over your radio plug? Shit man, they could just toss you in there with 3 black dudes and tell them you were arrested for for casing a black church.

You, not your radio, are always the weakest link.

        Anonymous

        >how much will you put up with before you just give them your key
This is why military comms use randomly generated keys and key loaders. The user himself never even sees the key.As long as the key is deleted before the device is captured everything is ok.
In WW2 SOE started using single-use double transpostion keys and one time pads, both of which were destroyed immediately after encrypting a message, because their agents were often tortured into revealing their long term keys.

          Anonymous

          how does that work
you 'get' the key somehow right
who cares if you know it

            Anonymous

1.generate a key and store it into a key loader
2.use key loader to fill radios
            3.delete key in key loader
military radios usually have a zeroizing mechanism so you can delete your key in a second if you think you're about to be captured

It's an app, but it's really more of a frame work to build an entire comms/data system off of, it's very powerful/flexible but like anything you get out what you put into it. If the rest of your squad doesn't understand the value of something like this teaching them will be an uphill battle, better to find a new crew IMHO. My crew is basically a bunch of well-funded geeks who love guns, are interested in learning squad tactics and recognize the danger we're all in.

Dude just buy an el cheapo android phone/tablet, you can get something that will work great and even be ruggedized for around $100. I have iphones as my daily drivers but keep android stuff around to play with.

Fair point. Would be worth it for having a better working knowledge of both mobile platforms.

Buy something with a plastic back. Glass backed phones have serious durability issues. I've cracked the back of several while they were in the case. Once the back is cracked, waterproofing completely goes out the window

      LARP shit.

Probably some boog fantasy where the US military has zero SIGINT capabilities for some reason.

Dunno honestly, I'm one of those "solution in search of a problem" types. If I see something is feasible, I'll often do it for the lulz.

Nice, I'm going to clone a couple of these but maybe with a different power source. I'm the anon who bought one of those Mystery Ranch Thor packs and this is basically what I had in mind for it.

The Thor pack is literally built for BB2590 batteries, which is perfect

Oh nice, guess I will stick with those then. They pretty easy to source? I've been playing with a few Meshtastics and got them to talk with ATAK so I think I can handle something like this, also thinking about building an SDR rig, can you fold one of those into this setup or is it best left as stand alone?

What's your opinion on using USRP B200mini with some tiny laptop as a homemade e lint setup. 70 MHz to 6 GHz is a wide range which makes me believe you would have to keep few antennas with just to use it. and the radio is not cheap, but it powers of USB.

can you hook up atak to a baofeng and use it to relay the signal to other users? some stuff i read online seems to suggest so but the fricking adapter cable costs as much as the radio, if it's really just an aux cable with a microphone and headpiece jack on the other end can i just DIY it?

LoRa mesh is arguably a better solution to digital comms than AREDN. You really don't need the baud rate of a 5ghz device and you're severely limiting your range with that frequency at the power you can provide with 12v.

      Daydream

Lol no. Then switch to 2.4 or 900. You're not locked to a single frequency

Lonely commer you realize the range on your wifi access points will always be worse than a 915mhz system with equal power and antenna optimization? That’s physics dude. Plus anyone relatively smart with a wifi pineapple can hack your MANET. Cope harder that you overpaid for a glorified wifi router so you can talk with yourself. Remember mesh nets require other nodes (i.e. friends)

Saturate the spectrum. THOR III, BEAM, any number of options really. What would worry me more is the though is that even with encryption and frequency hopping, you are constantly radiating.

The real frickeroo though is the software. Considering ATAK was made by the government, you know the software is shit and full of security vulnerabilities, intentional or not. Personally, I wouldn't keep a cellphone on me if I was doing cartel shit (hello Stingray), let alone whatever these larpers think they might do.

It's cute, and the thread is fun, but this is not a serious solution for anything.

                Anonymous

idk about other people but the ‘real’ use of this stuff doesn’t matter in my mind. It’s fun, it’s for comms in the woods people can’t listen in to (like over a ham freq) overrelatively short distances. Plus, it’s easily adaptable for FPV drone flying. Look up MAD; people are using MANETs for drone fleets/ smart packet delivery when you include onboard temp data storage

      Anonymous

Meshtastic takes a bit of setting up and troubleshooting to get going but especially with the ATAK forwarder plug in it's great as integrated into ATAK or as a stand alone MANET system with hardware that costs 1/4 of what that Rocket access point does.

well I just went on a buying spree
got a U-174 to 3.5mm converter for low impedance headsets. CTIA output.
got a PRYME PTT that works on mobile devices, for Zello.
couple used Rockets from the ebays
    cords, poe injector.
My problem is now I need THIS weird dongle which I can only find on aliexpress. Lightning output, USB C power, Rj45, 3.5mm. Can still test the whole setup w/o it but won't be able to use my comtacs 🙁

nah I need that exact thing, with 3.5mm for my PTT/comms, usb c charge, rj45 data. I can't link a 3.5+C->lightning and rj45+C->C linked together because the former can't do data & charge at the same time

Ah, my bad. If I'm understanding you correctly, I went the route of keeping voice/data separate to make things easier.

huh I found a different Belkin model, looks like I'm good to chain the dongles.
I'm directly feeding my headset to my iPhone with a HaMPR sort of system. And I don't want to use something like the BTH-550-MAX (or any bluetooth in general).
Thus I need three formats to be turned into a single male lightning. USB C passthrough power, RJ45, and 3.5mm with POC capability. Of course I cooooould use a qi for charging but that is dumb. In the middle of that is a flighthelmet adapter because impedance.
