It's more likely to happen with SCOTUS tbh. Pass some extreme gun law. SCOTUS shuts it down. Blue states and the Feds decide "lol were gonna enforce it anyways". Half the country now openly ignores any SCOTUS decision they dislike. Red states in response start ignoring any federal laws they dislike. Feds move in to enforce their laws on the red states. Red states refuse to comply and start arresting feds. A game of chicken ensues. If the federal government backs down then they lose all authority and we essentially balkanize. Red states won't back down because at least one will refuse and others will follow. If no one backs down shit pops off.
It could happen with any SCOTUS ruling like Roe v. Wade. As long as blue states decide to ignore it and the Fed decides to not enforce it on them.
