Chinese man killed 18 people with homemade firearm in Ju Country, Shandong Province.

Holy shit, it's fricking happening. Some sources say his weapon was a powder-actuated nail gun.

I can't remember the shooters exact personal reason (I think his grandparents were screwed over by the state), but Abe was a patron of essentially a Japanese version of Scientologists. Turns out he appointed alot of people connected to the church and gave it certain privileges. Abes approval ratings crashed after his death when this was dug up. So ultimately the shooter was vindicated and his schizophrenic conspiracy theory was right.

This isn't even the first time the leader of an east Asian country has been found to be influenced by a cult in recent memory.

That's because it wasn't a schizo theory. The "Shinzo Abe (among other japanese politicians) are in bed with a cult" is one of those open secret things in Japan. The guy's mother fell for the scam of the cult and gave away everything they owned, including land, to the cult. So he got pissed and zapped Abe since he was the most accessible and forward facing member of the whole movement.

        >for an average citizen, it's not actually that bad
This is more or less true but that's not to say that it's good exactly either.

You do have 669 culture and it's still pretty standard. Most people work 6 days regardless, school is 6 days too.
Housing is unaffordable to the young generation, everyone else only survives because they got apartments under the communist system where companies/universities would build a housing unit and give an apartment to every worker and they eventually ended up owning them for nearly free when China went capitalist.
The air quality in many cities remains bad a lot of the time, only the coastal megacities are reliably good (and Kunming for weird geographic reasons).

But yes, if you keep your head down and just live quietly then it's not *that* bad and some parts of Chinese society and culture are actually quite good. I've certainly never had anyone try and mug me there, burglary is almost unheard of. Online fraud is one of the few types of victim crime that isn't pretty much stamped out.

Though of course this all goes out the window if an official wants your land or somebody videos you doing something and it goes viral and you have to be arrested for causing trouble to appease the mob, or you complain about something too loudly and need to be silenced with some detention and deplatforming and shit.

This sounds like the Chinese version of complaining to the manager, except the manager is the government. People expected the government to intervene and put a stop to whatever it is, but it's happening on social media which is often going to be out of context or fake or misconstrued.

I read an article recently by a Chinese economist who was (very carefully and politely) complaining that the economic trouble comes in part because a lot of Chinese believed in an implicit guarantee that they could make money (it doesn't matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice) and the government would bail them out if things went upside down. In particular, you had a lot of people pre-paying for homes in advance since there's not a lot of other ways to invest money in China (and they have capital controls so it's difficult to move money out of China), and then the developers became way too overleveraged, and then once the government put the brakes on it, the developers defaulted and now there's 20 million homes that have been paid for but are either not built or incomplete, and people want their homes or their money back. Which is a big problem.

Chinese Karens are far worse than you can possibly imagine. Online lynch mobs are a thing too and happen every day.
It's usually easier to arrest the target of the mob, Chinese law has a few offences that can be made to fit anything one is "picking fights and starting quarrels" which is applied to anyone that says or does anything that pisses people off, your crime is provocation, essentially.
There's plenty of times they arrest the person who started or spread the story as well or instead. There's specific offences for saying something online that causes disharmony and they don't care whether it's true or not. This is used for whistle-blowers etc but also for trolls who dox or make or spread hoaxes.

      >because china lies and underreports the numbers, here's a list of reported attacks on shools in china.
The news media is all state-owned or controlled there and they'll discard bad news at high velocity. It's all about encouraging a "positive information atmosphere" or whatever they call it. I met a Chinese student who was visiting and I showed him around my town, took him out shooting the next day which he was thrilled to do, and his views about things over there were pretty mixed overall (some positive, some negative -- he was rather liberal in his outlook and didn't like the censorship, rolled his eyes at a lot of his government's propaganda, but was very opposed to drugs...), and we saw a local news crew set up doing a live shot for the nightly news.

He had never seen a T.V. news crew like that before. He said they didn't have them there, maybe in Shanghai.

        >He had never seen a T.V. news crew like that before. He said they didn't have them there, maybe in Shanghai.
China does have them, the anchors are always crossing live to some reporter at a festival or something.
It's much less common with disasters and stuff, usually it's reserved for feel-good stories.
That's one way the propaganda works, bad news is announced dryly without juicy details to engage emotions, good news gets hyped up and presented with interviews, background etc.

          >It's much less common with disasters and stuff, usually it's reserved for feel-good stories.
That makes sense. The news crew in my town that we saw was just there on the street reporting a crime story or something like that. It wasn't good news.

          >That's one way the propaganda works, bad news is announced dryly without juicy details to engage emotions, good news gets hyped up and presented with interviews, background etc.
It seems like there's positives and negatives to that. I do think we let sensationalism around bad news get carried away in messing with people's subjective emotions. It's like doomscrolling, that just isn't healthy, but media organizations are incentivized because it attracts clicks to their websites. I don't think I'd want the American news media to just be "good vibes" all the time though. I check in on a Chinese site sometimes that's technically privately owned, but there's this economic crash and there's nothing about it and the public intellectuals on there are talking about how the "Chinese people's aesthetic self-confidence is entering a new era" and here's some hanfu dresses and I'm, like, c'mon.

I meam he’s not wrong, police state can handle that at least.
East Asian governments, as a general rule, are very sensitive to tourists not getting fricked over and taking away their (the East Asian government’s) face. So they generally keep the areas percieved as squeaky clean, actually squeaky clean.
Of course you can always go to the less-prosperous areas and find trouble if you want to. And there’s always a new scam to be tried.
But in general they put way more effort into making every tourist area into another “Disneyland with the Death Penalty”, a pretty based William Gibson essay about Singapore. They seem to care more than most American/ Western euro cities.

If you walked through sanlitun drunk then scams or something aren't impossible but the rest wouldn't happen.

You might be stopped and ID checked but police don't give a shit about drunks.
If you were drunk in Tiananmen square, you might be in more trouble with police but it's probably because they wouldn't have any sense of humour about a drunk idiot saying or doing anything stupid because trolling seems funny when you're drunk.

Eunuchs were men that used to guard concubine harems of muslim rulers.
They were castrated in order to prevent them from having sex with pretty girls they were supposed to guard.
You cant rape somene when you have no wiener and balls,
Same thing with china. Its hard to commit a crime when state keeps a boot on your throat all the time.
Of course if you don't intend to commit any crimes, the boot on your throat stays on, just in case, but as you can see

you know, for an average citizen, it's not actually that bad. what is important is you and your family are safe

          >some people are fine with stepped on.
          NTA

Most Chinese people would probably prefer not to be stepped on but being that they are, being stepped on isn't 100% bad, there are actually some upsides of Chinese totalitarianism.
Would I want that for my own country? No.
But if we could find what they do well, extract and replicate it without totalitarian control then I'd be for it.

And Chinese, even if they threw off the CCP, would probably want to keep some of the present system intact because it unironically works for them.

Foreigners suffer a bit because Chinese bureaucracy isn't designed to make things easy for non-citizens but it's usually possible to navigate it to do most things.
It's generally more a matter of learning new processes and stuff.

I lived there for nearly a decade and it drove me crazy sometimes but I wasn't really in a hurry to leave either because there's no governments I've lived under that don't drive me crazy some of the time.
May be Georgian government is the lightest touch and friendliest to non-citizens I've encountered so far.

Mafia killings I imagine. Or to get rid of a business rival and then paying some other guy to kill this guy. They don't have a well-developed system to adjudicate disputes like taking someone to court. And while I hardly think Confucian culture is somehow determinative of the average Chinese guy or how they behaved, there is a strong element of an "eye for an eye."

US has one of the worst police investigation success rates for murder of all the developed world and even worse than a lot of developing countries. It used to be almost 90% of murders cases in the US were solved now it's like less than 60%. I wonder if they even bother investigating gang related murders.

    >How do these rural white places in america have gangland level murder rates?
Some of these southern cities in these so-called "rural" states are essentially black cities like New Orleans and Memphis. Or Jackson, Mississippi. They can be pretty ghetto. In rural areas, white rednecks and Mexicans shoot each other all the time over stupid beef. Now you're cooking with meth! What could go wrong? My late uncle was one of these guys and went to prison for robbing a bank.

Southern culture in the U.S. is a bit more violent in general, it's like an honor culture, and this is nothing new. One reason why the Confederacy ran roughshod over the Union in the early days of the Civil War is there was a surplus population of fighty whites in the South who were roaring to go which gave horseback-riding Confederate raiders a fearsome reputation. Before that, they were stabbing each other to death over card games in saloons. People call them white trash. The trash of the British Empire maybe.

Those northern plains states in the middle like the Dakotas have some the highest per-capita gun ownership in the U.S. and some of the lowest crime. A lot of peaceful Scandinavians settled there.

Most murders are concentrated in geographically small areas. Chicago, for example, is well known for being violent and is dubbed Chiraq for the number of shootings; however, breaking down its crimes geographically it's a handful of neighborhoods where the majority of murders occur. This has greater impact on the statistics of Illinois as a whole because the rest of the state is less densely populated than the Chicago metro area. Homicides per capita alone is not a good metric of comparison because of inherent distortions. It's how you get things like a population of 500k spread out over 10,000sq mi that sees 5 murders a year being seen as more dangerous than a population of 2.5 million crammed into 100sq mi that has 24 murders a year. That's not even getting into external factors, NYC alone probably has more sworn law enforcement agents than exist in my entire state.

The answer is that they're just like other East Asians when it comes to violence and crime. In general, they have a huge aversion to physical confrontations. Usually they will exact justice or revenge on another party financially.

However, when it comes to rates of mental health crisis incidents I can absolutely guarantee you that their rates are higher than any Western country irrespective of what statistics might say.

I've seen it with my own eyes. The only difference is that usually they don't have easy access to guns that they could use to hurt others.

IDK but I know they banned men from dressing up as women IIRC? Basically men would dress in women's clothing, put on makeup in a way they learned from streamers, and use AI face filters (and I assume voice) to trick men into giving them donations and gifts and shit. Funny shit, I can't blame them.

The reason for this is actually pretty simple if you actually look at the sources. The information from the US's statistics are the raw numbers of homicides without justifiable homicide, negligent homicide, reckless homicide etc. removed. The EU figures per the source are excluding death due to legal interventions, justifiable homicide in self-defense, attempted intentional homicide, homicide without the element of intent, non-negligent or involuntary manslaughter, etc. I'm sure the picture that it paints isn't spectacular, but I doubt it is half as bad as this image makes it out to be.

This is just based on documentaries and hearsay from a few friends that know druggies, but my understanding is that you can't really get straight heroin anymore. AFAIK dealers started cutting fent into heroin and other drugs because it's cheap and because it's more addictive and has a shorter high than heroin, which means you need the next fix a lot sooner, and it's lead to people becoming addicted to the fent itself to the point that they basically forget about heroin and just start doing straight fent.

Chinese out west and in the high mountains have high gun ownership. The hunting scene is pretty massive and they have some kino vintage pieces. Cities are just like city gays anywhere so no gunz.

I mean, they really are openly defending the CCP since their entire settlement out West is CCP policy. The CCP believe and preach the racial destiny of the Han Chinese is to ethnically settle and cleanse the west. Any Han dude you meet who’s from out west has a fairly high likelihood of being a supporter of the CCP. It’d be like saying an Israeli settler isn’t necessarily a supporter of Bibi.

City gays are insufferable in China just as much as in the West. They’re the Americanised ones that consistently b***h and moan. Western settlers just genocide Urgays and chill.

They'd go to extreme lengths to get ARs, American-made trucks, confederate flags, cowboy boots, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the rural chinks had something similar, especially given how much the urbanites seem to idolize parts of American culture such as basketball and hip-hop

      >every dude on a jobsite to ever pick up a Hilti has fired at his buddies at least once
Yeah, but due to safety, every nail gun you'll ever see in the US has the gasses from the blank act on a heavy piston, driving it at low velocity -- firing directly into something as intended, the mass of the piston pushing the nail in makes up for the low velocity, but fired into the air, the nail is relatively harmless.
The early powder-actuated nailguns used to be direct-drive, with the gases from the blank propelling the nail directly at high speed. It's a simpler design with fewer parts, but they aren't generally available any more because when discharged into the air, the nail is potentially lethal.

I have no idea whether China has ever, on paper, restricted high-velocity nailguns like the US has to reduce industrial accidents. But even if so, I imagine they have a whole lot of high-velocity nailguns floating around.

Like with 9/11 theories, I err on the side of big, dumb bureaucracies being outwitted in a complex world by terrorist groups, cartels, and other violent transnational groups (in addition to plain old quid-pro-quo grifters) who maneuver outside the playing field... or inside of it.

Those who use terror deliberately do something so crazy and unexpected that there's a psychological shock and they manipulate the shock, like setting off one bomb to panic a crowd into a kill zone for the second one which does most of the damage. Bin Laden wanted us to go on a warpath so he could fight us. It was like Pearl Harbor in that sense, create a lot of fear and anxiety but then Japan fricked up at Midway. But one reaction to trauma is to deny it happened, which 9/11 conspiracy theories are one way to do. But it did happen. COVID also happened. Deal with it.

As part of the reproachment with China in the past few months, Biden and Xi made a deal where Xi pinky-swore to crack down on fentanyl precursors made in China. We'll see if it has any effect or not.
